Hummmm I was thinking about buying one of these next week. I think I may hold off now. It's the response from Apple (well Jobs) that has really annoyed me. Just hold it differently ... as if it isn't a major problem, just people being petty.

Surely this came out in their QA testing?

This only seems to cause an issue if I press the area firmly and I would never hold it in that place either browsing or on a call so I'm not that fussed. The device itself is amazing - no other phone comes close so its a shame that this will over-shadow that.

I dont think Apple will get away with it highly arrogant response because presumably people will start complaining to the networks who will in turn pressure Apple for a solution.......

It probably did but when the testers reported it, Steve just said hold it differently so they did. People should do as Steve tells them, hold it differently and enjoy your video calls over WiFi that will be available on 3g with the iPhone 5. Steve knows best.

It does seem to be a design fault from what I have seen but one point I'll raise is that back when phones had mono LCD screens (the point of that being that they didn't 'sleep') people used to stress a bit about signal because it was in their face all the time. "If I leave it on the table but point it that way I only get 3 bars but if i point it that way I get 5 bars so I leave it that way" Then colour screens came out and the number of bars got less attention because the screen would sleep. My point is that if you get a mobile phone and start walking about and doing different things with it whilst watching the signal bars, you will often find them jumping up and down for no obvious reason.

Slightly different to them dropping calls or internet conections though?

My house mate has a different error with his.

He randomly gets this error popup all the time.

he has nothing plugged into or linked to the phone.

anyone seen it before ?

None :)

I really can't reproduce it, tried it after my run last night with clammy hands, nothing.

So yeah, happy with it

I can't believe that it would only be on some models - Hold it in your left hand and cover the gap on the left side of the phone with your palm (As you naturally hold a phone - or at least I how I do...).

It's a definite problem. :(

I've also voted none as I genuinely can't find a fault.

The screen is perfect on mine, and absolutely stunning in my opinion.

I also can't seem to affect the signal no matter where or how I hold my phone. I would possibly say that the overall signal strength is down just a teeny tiny touch on what my 3GS used to get, but never does it drop to the point of being unusable.

So yeah, I guess I've been lucky.

Same problem - I'm in a very weak O2 signal area, and gripping the phone tight can kill the connection completely. My old 3G also dropped when gripped in the same way, but not as much as the 4.

I think it's more prevalent the weaker the original signal. Pretty annoyed, but will see what happens in the next couple weeks before taking it to an Apple Store.

Honestly, I've tried this so many ways. Both hands, left hand, right hand. Me and my dad were having a laugh yesterday together calling each other covering it with both of our hands and fingers on the gaps. Nothing, his seems fine as well. I've tried it with wet hands, dry hands, can't get it too lose signal! At one point I even got annoyed as if it was a problem it wasn't dropping signal!

Milton Keynes was obviously a good batch :p

Wow just wow...thats terrible from apple to actually fob off the whole reception issue....hmmm im no longer sure i will get one now...if thats how apple take their stance

Thats a big middle finger to all the apple loyalists and i sincerely hope that they now turn their backs on apple for showing utter disregard to their customers....shame on Apple.

Agreed.

That is shameful really.

It really does depend on location.

In central London with strong 3G everywhere (almost), not a single dropped bar by gripping it here, there and everywhere.

But move out of Central London and reception will decrease only when holding it in the "bad" way.

I think what I'm going to do is wait a week and use the phone naturally (Forgetting all about the problems) - if I find that the phone doesn't work as well as my 3GS - it's going back :p

Apples response is just gobsmacking!!!!

Its like Toyota saying yes our cars have break problems but if you change your driving style you'll be alright.
