iphone down to £169

Having just grabbed one from the CPW I was sure I was going to use the Zip Util to do the Unlock, Jailbreak & Activate. However I've been reading that it downgrades the bootloader and that is a bad thing, as there is no ability to upgrade it again?
In all probability won't make the blindest bit of difference. All the bootloader does is boot the OS - the later version is much more restrictive, hence the downgrade.

If you want a less permanent option, iLiberty+ downgrades it using a fake bootloader, which is entirely reversible.

Didn't need a guide, get ZiPhone for Windows, plug it in so iTunes recognises it, then press "Do It All" in ZiPhone :p

I suppose that's a guide...

The only part of that one I found misleading was:

If you have just bought your iPhone, switch it off and connect it to your PC or Mac and hold down the power and home button on your iPhone and release power a second after the screen goes black.

It won't go into recovery mode (or switch on) whilst connected, you have to do the power and home button undocked then plug it in once it's booted.

Everything after that worked for me, albeit on a PC.

so iTunes has it recognised and wants me to activate it... and i installed ZiPhone V3.0

So just click "Do It All"

Do i need to make sure i have a certain version or anything?

That should do everything fine. Mine was 1.1.2 out of the box, so I unlocked it, upgraded using iTunes, then had to unlock again. Not sure if there's a quicker way than that though?

Yep, that's what the guide says. :)

Once you've jailbroken it once, iTunes will redetect and probably tell you 1.1.4 is up for download. Update it, then jailbreak again.

Just done this on mine, with <borat>great success</borat>.

I put it in recovery mode then restoresd it to version 1.14 then i jailbroke it.

Riiight, that's a quicker way I suppose. You not meant to update a jailbroken one I read somewhere?

It wasn't jailbroke, i plugged it in, went on itunes restored it then jailbroke it.

Taken from the guide posted earlier.

Before you start:

* If you have just bought your iPhone, switch it off and connect it to your PC or Mac and hold down the power and home button on your iPhone and release power a second after the screen goes black.

Keep holding the home button until iTunes gives you confirmation about the phone being in recovery mode.

The screen should stay completely blank and not display a iTunes logo or Apple logo.

Click 'Update' to download and install the latest firmware (Currently 1.1.4).
* If your iPhone is already unlocked on a lower firmware, I strongly recommend pressing 'Restore' in iTunes so the iPhone is completely wiped and start again. You can upgrade and then do it, but it is not recommended.
* Keep the original o2 SIM card in that came with the iPhone.

I was told earlier in the thread that it's best to restore immediately through ziphone, rather than jailbreak, update, and jailbreak again. The latter method worked fine, I wanted to say, but the former is probably a 'better' method.

I have looked everywhere and there is no app for sending files over bluetooth, you had my hopes up :( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know if there is an app, but i just meant that that is the only current way that it can be done :)

Indeed, but waiting to using it as a phone for 4 months aint too bad I spose

Do you mean wait 4 months for your contract to end or to get switched from 3? Only took me 5 days or so.

Omg can't believe this, i bought the 8gb last wednesday on contract because i thought i will finally get an iphone, i got my bonus at work of 100 quid so took the 8 back to the store and changed it for a 16gb for no real reason.... Now the price of the 8 goes down and i didn't even really need the 16gb. :( such bad luck on my part... can you guys suggest anything ?

Is there not like a 7 day return policy or something? I would like to think there was. If so, just restore the iPhone and give it back. Get your money and buy the 8Gb again.

Just did that mate, the second i saw this thread i boxed up my iphone and went straight to the o2 shop :), i am now home with a reciept saying -329.99 and +169.99. Really happy at the moment.
