iPhone - Those who will be buying one, in here.

I have to say, I agree with Durzel's comments. I was very excited about the iPhone and was sure I'd be buying one when they came out in the UK. But the ridiculous cost of the 18 month deal (I have been on Virgin for years with an average monthly bill of less than a fiver!) along with the absurd nannying approach of locking 3rd party applications out has disappointed me enormously. So, sorry Apple, I love your operating system, laptops, and ipods, but this time round it's no sale. I want mobile email and web access, but not at that price and with those limitations. I'm actually looking at the N95 instead.

Edit: the SDK mentioned in the previous post is a step in the right direction though I've read elsewhere that it is likely to be given only to prestigious developers and very tightly controlled...

Paul.

It's going to be interesting to see what goes on when the iPhone is released in France. It's currently forbidden to carrier lock a phone for more than 6months and there are rumours there will be a locked Orange version and an unlocked version (with a significant price hike no doubt). I'm wondering whether they will release a fully unlocked iPhone in countries like this, or lock it so it only works for the carriers in that country.

November is the release date, so I guess we will find out then :)

I don't suppose this will get an objective reply but hey ho...

I'm quite shocked at how easy it seems that people will disregard draconian practices like application lock-out (SDK is coming granted, but don't be fooled into thinking average Joes will be writing applications - they require digital certification, etc) and very high cost-of-ownership simply because the item in question has an Apple logo on it.

Let's face it - if it were Microsoft peddling this phone and it was being sold for £279 + 18 month £35 a month tariff, and they'd artificially locked down the phone in both hardware and software, and pretty much essential phone applications like MMS, proper SMS support (the list of bugs and quirks is massive) - people would be slating the "mPhone" from the rooftops. But because it's Apple the rose-tinted specs go on and it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I've got a MacBook Pro myself so I'm by no means anti-Apple, there was a good reason for me buying it and OSX, etc is an experience you don't get elsewhere. With the iPhone however Apple are peddling a crippled piece of technology and people on here and elsewhere are lapping it up? It makes no sense at all. The UI, whilst great, isn't the be all and end all of the phone - not when you're paying £279+£35 a month for it anyway......

Probably the best post in this thread. :)

it wont break the french unlocked phone because it has been programmed to be unlocked by apple. as its against french law to keep a phone locked (apparently) :p

oh, and expect an email justin :p

Hmm mail in trust plz :p, still kind of unsure wether to wait for the french version or get a us version. As long as software updates aren't forced on the phone there should be no problems?

you've got mail ;) well you got it a while ago but i had to leave work so i didnt post.

seeing as orange are officially going to be selling the iphone with no contract or locked to a network, updates shouldnt be a problem. :p

Probably just get a us version, can be snagged for around £270, i shudder to think how much an "apple unlocked" version would cost. In the region of £450-500 im sure,

Is it easier to buy one and then unlock it yourself or buying one preunlocked? Seen some uk sales on the bay not unlocked. Ive read the procedure is pretty simple. Dunno about waiting for an imported one =/

It's easy to unlock the phone yourself.. but the updates released by Apple have bricked those phones that were unlocked (there are hacks to get around it).

The main reason people want the Orange-iPhone is because they're sold as unlocked (against french law) so they won't have to worry about updating.

I'd wait until November before buying just to see how it pans out.

FYI Gerard:

T-Mobile - Germany
Orange - France
02 - UK

So out of everyone on here that has actually bought one and using it right now, is it worth £300 to buy now or is it better to wait until its out in the UK and then try and get one cheaper then?

Hey guys i have some good news for o2 customers who bought a phone on contract from o2 before the release date for the iPhone was announced:

Existing O2 customers

If you're already an O2 customer and have bought or upgraded your handset before 19 September (when the UK launch of the Apple iPhone was announced), you're in luck. You will be able to upgrade to an Apple iPhone without any extra contract charges.

If you have recently moved over to O2 (on or after 19 September), and want to switch to an Apple iPhone tariff, you'll have to pay £219 on top of the £260 Apple iPhone price to cancel your current subscription.

So you have to pay £260 for the phone which is a bit high but you dont have to have the **** contract that new customers will have to have, you get to keep your curent contract :)

£219 on top of the iPhone?!

Talk about shafting your existing customers (but then I suppose it's always cost a lot to buy-out)
