I'm sure AT&T, O2, T-Mobile and Orange would share a different view. Hence being the reason why Apple are having to carry out such a move.

It doesn't make it any less stupid of course, but it's not like there's no reason behind doing it.

I actually think t-mobile and orange would be against it, as less customers for o2 means more for them.;)

Apple could just have forced O2 to charge a reasonable price. Since Apple have all the bargaining power. The people working there must have an IQ of 1 or something. "Hmm looks like people are unlocking the iphone because we are ripping them off, I know instead of forcing them to activate their phone thus bringing us in loads of money or god forbid reducing the price, lets just break everyones phones so they never buy apple again!"

no one forced the users to flash to the new firmware though, and Apple did warn this would happen

I admit, they shouldn't have made it so the 1.1.1 update "bricked" the phone, but no one knows if the update bricked it by accident, or if it's the result of Apple's code not liking the modified firmware on the modem of all the unlocked phones.

I dare say Apple knew it would break the lock (they must have tested it!), but not providing an easy way to completely restore the phone is where they dropped the ball :(

.. again, if the stats are to be believed then 1% of the iPhone userbase actually hacked it, so Apple will probably only count the short-term loss; I just hope that it hasn't left a bad taste in the public's mouth or the future will be a lot rockier.

I'm starting to think Apple could have just patched the hole months ago, and cut the hacking efforts dead-instead of leaving it gain momentum in the first place*

*basically leading people on by turning a blind eye, then smashing them down to the ground in one move.

I think that's giving them too much credit - they were probably more concerned with actually getting the phone out the door, to the detriment of a bulletproof software base..!

I actually think that phones being locked and bricked up is a good thing.

Reason being that besides the people who want them first, there will be less interest because of the price and contract. Maybe then they will lower prices...

Also I just can't see the iPhone being as big here as it was in the US... the US just doesn't have the same obsession with phones and they seem behind us with some technology. (Based on living in North America for two years). When the iPhone came along it was about the most exciting thing to have ever happened with phones.

I gots gadget fever. Nice device - feels like a solid chunk of metal. Unlocked on O2 PAYG :)

Yeah - This covers it. The only correction being that the new SIM should be inserted before running the (new version of the) unlock application, not after.

Just typing this on my dads iphone. Just come up to London to see him and he just whipped it out. This this thing is amazing. So intuitive and lightning fast. Very tempted to buy one!

If going by the iPod touch interface, it will be a huge joy to use. I am highly tempted to get an iPhone because of it.

wush.. is that a replacement orange case or is it just the grain (of the table) reflecting?

Jammy bugger! :p

Me and one of the first ever UK iphones on O2. Kept in a safe in my office.

It might not be as feature filled as the N95, but its cool as hell, and I shall deffo be getting one.

I would say 99% that they won't sell them there.
I've been to most islands and buying technological items is very difficult!

I don't suppose this will get an objective reply but hey ho...

I'm quite shocked at how easy it seems that people will disregard draconian practices like application lock-out (SDK is coming granted, but don't be fooled into thinking average Joes will be writing applications - they require digital certification, etc) and very high cost-of-ownership simply because the item in question has an Apple logo on it.

Let's face it - if it were Microsoft peddling this phone and it was being sold for £279 + 18 month £35 a month tariff, and they'd artificially locked down the phone in both hardware and software, and pretty much essential phone applications like MMS, proper SMS support (the list of bugs and quirks is massive) - people would be slating the "mPhone" from the rooftops. But because it's Apple the rose-tinted specs go on and it's the best thing since sliced bread.

I've got a MacBook Pro myself so I'm by no means anti-Apple, there was a good reason for me buying it and OSX, etc is an experience you don't get elsewhere. With the iPhone however Apple are peddling a crippled piece of technology and people on here and elsewhere are lapping it up? It makes no sense at all. The UI, whilst great, isn't the be all and end all of the phone - not when you're paying £279+£35 a month for it anyway......
