iPhone - Those who will be buying one, in here.

I'll almost certainly get one if it becomes available on pay-as-you-go.

That won't happen (legally) in the first year.

Apple have said that it's pay monthly-only, so expect to wait if you're set on the PAYG iPhone.

Wether a standard 02 PAYG SIM will work is anyone's guess.. I'd imagine it would, but things like Visual Voicemail wouldn't work, but that's speculation so you'd need to confirm it with 02 before buying the phone.

And the way i see it, is that you're paying £200 for the iPod Touch 8GB, £70 for the phone functions, then your contract. That doesn't sound all that bad really does it?

That sounds terrible to me! Who pays £35 a month for a contract that terrible without getting a free or impressively cheap phone? £70 for the "phone functions" also sounds pretty terrible when you can buy even a decent phone for £100.

From anyone but Apple, no one would buy it. Even as it is I think they're going to have to be much more competitive if they want the iPhone to be a mainstream product rather than a niche product for enthusiasts.

Apple said:
Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.

I'm personally not too fussed about the iPhone but it feels like Apple is trying hard to fortify the contract they have with AT&T - which might be the same with O2/Orange/T-mobile in Europe...

Interesting. Since this seems to only apply to sim unlocking your phone to operate on other networks, what about if you want to use the iphone on the proper network, but on a different tariff? Do you still need to unlock it?

Are you ready to have your brain go flying out of the back of your skull? If you said yes, be prepared to lose your mind... repeatedly. One of the Holy Grails / Seven Wonders of the iPhone World has been loosed upon the Earth today, namely: VoIP. According to a company called Truphone, they have unlocked the secret of IP telephony on the iPhone, and demonstrated said ability today at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego. Executing commands via the Terminal (i.e., on a phone which had been Jailbreak-ed), Truphone CEO James Tagg was able to call another mobile phone using only an IP connection -- all without breaking the SIM lock. According to the company, the software is still in beta, but they soon plan to have a version which will simplify activation, and allow seamless switching between WiFi and SIM use. Clearly, an exciting development for iPhone users, but a cringe-inducing situation for AT&T. Check the video after the break to see it all in action.

This is a big big big development for the iPhone. And all without breaking the SIM Lock.

The iphone looks to be a nice phone thats for sure but features wise im not so sure about it. Too many things missing as mentioned before have completely put me off the iphone as it is and i was thinking earlier this yr when it was announced that i would ditch my tmobile contract and go back to O2. But the price is silly for what it is tbh, dont get me wrong i like Apple but i think they have completely and utterly got it wrong...i cant see how a phone without 3G is going to be of any use...it wont for me as i do use 3G quite a bit on my n95 ie web-browsing etc. Perhaps if they bring out a 3G version then i might be tempted to get one. But at the moment im sticking with my n95, it may not have a great battery life but it does everything i could want it to and more...plus the new n95 is out soon so im looking at getting one of those to replace the n95 i have now.

On another note though, O2 have announced a flate rate data plan, which will be released in Oct this yr...looks like its going to be £7.50 a month for 200mb of data included although if you want more it will cost £30 a month for the truly unlimited data plan.

Do 02 actually have a 3G network in your area?

Not trying to have a go, but many people who've moaned about the lack of 3G haven't checked if 02 actually cover their area, a bit like the EDGE situation now.

Yes they do although ill say this, when i was with o2 a yr ago i could hardly get 3g even though they kept telling me that my area was good for it. I live in east london and at the moment using tmobile with web n walk. Everytime i use 3g, well usually in my area ill get 3.5g rather than 3g it works perfectly fine and it super fast. Whereas o2 couldnt even give me 3g let alone 56k speed:p...one of the reasons why i left them to go to tmobile. Also left them because quite frankly where i work, the Docklands the reception for o2 was utter crap and tmobile has been spot on for me for the past yr or so since ive been with them.

I can imagine lawsuits will be filed against Apple for this. Deliberatley destroying peoples property is not legal. I can only imagine how many customers Apple will have lost due to this and all the bad press it will get. Apple have done some really stupid things, but I think this even tops microsofts and sonys blunders.

I'm sure AT&T, O2, T-Mobile and Orange would share a different view. Hence being the reason why Apple are having to carry out such a move.

It doesn't make it any less stupid of course, but it's not like there's no reason behind doing it.

O2s 3G coverage is the worst in the UK.

Exactly. My point was even if Apple released a 3G-enabled iPhone with 02 then it'd be pointless :)

I'm willing to bet Apple were forced to push this update (pressure from European carriers), think of it; If you're trying to make a big exclusive deal with someone you need to prove that you can at least keep it exclusive for a little while.

If I was 02/Orange/T-Mobile then I'd be breathing down Steve's neck to plug the holes before the official release.

I'm currentley with 02, but I REALLY want an iPhone! Does anybody know if I would be able to upgrade my current W880i to an iPhone when it's released, even though I'm 8 months into my current contract?

Thanks for any input :)
