iRacing

Wow! Great news! I really can't wait for it to be released.

Finished my paint:

More likely Turn 10 related. The newly laser scanner tracks have tended to appear in Forza and iRacing within a few months of each other. Bathurst, Long Beach and now the 'Ring. I've got a hunch they are pooling resources.

Yay! Finally upgraded the PC and signed up to iRacing last night. Felt good to be back in a racing sim after a few years break.

I'm loving the MX5 so far. I'm surprised by the bite it has on turn in, it's like a big go kart! Don't know if my times are any good, but I got a 1:46.6 around Laguna and 1:03.3 around LRP. It took me a while to learn LRP as I hadn't driven it in any other game before. The lift-off oversteer in turn 2 and the chicane was a killer.

Finally figured it out to discover that the schedule changes tomorrow to Summit Point... doh!

Also, is there a list of OcUK member's names anywhere?

Popped my race cherry tonight, second in my first race at Summit Point, and then managed to win the second! :D

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get out fr rookies? I think I need an SR of more than 3.5 when promotion day comes, is that right?

4.0 = auto promotion
3.0 = end of season promotion
passing a whole number (1.0, 2.0 etc) adds 0.4 if you go over that threshold, deducts 0.4 if you drop below it. So 1.9 with +0.2 would give you a 0.6 gain, 2.1 with -0.2 you'd get a 0.6 loss.

I've not done a race for the previous 2 weeks, cant build up the effort to bother. I was hoping a mate would do it too, cos we've done most sims together, and it'd give me a reason to practice and bother, but he's decided to give it about 2min and give up. So about 15wks in and about £300 in content & credit, and im not even sure i can be bothered any more.

Sorry to read that Paul. If you fancy something a little different I'll be running practice the next 2 days for the RUF cup. It's a different challenge to the GT3 version to drive. I have a ts3 I use and you're welcome to join me.

Edit :
Sunday, well done on the 1-2! You'll be out of rookie faster with clean races.

That's a real shame, Paul. Is there no way to sell/transfer the content you've bought?

Thanks Muska, getting there. SR is up to 2.86 after two races so hopefully not too much longer until I get a D license. Need to concentrate more to keep clean though, as both races had 3 incidents due to silly off tracks while under no pressure at all.

The x1 track limits at Spa just get worse.

As far as I know it's supposed to be more than half the car off track for a x1. At Spa it seems half a wheel off and you get one.

I noticed at Summit Point it was a little inconsistent. On the left turn after the tight complex I seemed to get a 1x for putting a wheel over the kerb, yet on the last corner you could put the entire car over the rumble strip and right up to the gravel without penalty.

I guess it's just a case of using testing to find the limits.

Nah, you cant sell content, although i bought the $100 credits and got $25 free, so i have the $100 giftable on my account, and $25 is tied (like participation credits) i believe.

I'll probably just give it a while and see. With the future updates maybe it'll draw me back in. Its not helped by the fact that you cant practice with a friend online (private host) without handing over money, and because all the decent content is behind a paywall and $100+ needs to be spent before you can even access it (maybe you could do it cheaper by only racing on the free tracks in the free cars, but it'll take a long time or hammering those few free combo's), and then you get to the GT3's and hand over even more $$.

I refused to get into iR because of this, im happy with the pay £30 once and get all the content solution. Maybe you dont get constant updates, but if that means paying £30 for Game2 then so be it, its still cheaper than $80/yr plus $300 of tracks and growing.
The only reason i got into it was because i missed meaningful races, races where 1/3 of the grid didnt disconnect when they're 15sec behind on the first lap, realise they cant win, but tried divebombing into T1, weaved around blocking clearly faster drivers, and ruined other peoples races thinking they could win etc (aka Forza tactics).

If the mate had even bothered more than a few laps around LRP in the MX5, and gave it a proper try, then i'd give him the $100 credit, because it'd at least give value to what ive already bought. As its worth $0 if im not playing it.
If i cant get back into it, then in a few months i'll come back and i'll give the giftable credits away to everyone in here.

Part of the reason I gave up on sim racing a few years ago (apart from the wife and I having a baby which meant 0 free time) was due to the first turn heroes and the poor scheduling of pickup races. It was almost soul destroying in GTR to wait for a 60 minute race to go live, only for half the field to crash out or disconnect within the first 3 laps.

Now I've got the sim racing itch again, and iRacing seems to have the perfect setup for what I'm after. I agree it can get expensive, but I think for the quality of racing I've experienced - even in rookies - and seen on YT and Twitch it's worth it.

In other new, I just got promoted to a D license, hurrah! Any suggestions on what's the best series to go to next for good participation and clean racing? Should I stick with MX5s?

Should have done the endurance racing in NR2003's GTP mod. Spend a month on and off practicing for the next race, a minimum 6 hour race. You got a few idiots, but with that length of event and full damage it made most respect their peers.

Once a year we did the Le Mans 24 Hours, and I think it was our first time there when one of our major opponents had their engine expire pulling away for the warm up lap. Event over without even starting. How utterly gutted would you be about that?

Thankfully for them they had 2 other cars, so they were able to swap drivers around a little to give everyone a go.

I think it was that year that two cars crashed out of that race because a driver a became disorientated and forgot which straight he was on (it can happen when you've been driving 2-3 hour stints).

By a big margin the most rewarding championship I've ever been involved in, but the amount of preparation required to be competitive was insane.

Congrats. I'd heartily recommend the Skip Barber, the racing is generally great fun, the experience levels are good and, best of all, there is a lot of participation, so you can always find a race. You'll have to invest in some tracks, pick the ones that interest you, but it's good investment if you plan to continue with iRacing.

I find this game really interesting. I cant stop watching races online. However, I have no idea what the subscription structure is like. I understand you pay for a month, quarter or year.

But how does the extra content work? I'm only interested in the GT3 cars and Series. How much would one be expected to spend?

You buy the content you want.

Usually $12-$15 per track, $12 per car. Buy three or more at once and they apply a discount that starts at 10%

To earn the participation credits you need to complete 8 out of the 12 weeks in the season.

Although you may only be interested in GT3 you can only take part in official races if you have a B licence. So that means you will have to complete official races and get promoted at each level in rookie, D and C class series before you can race in GT3.

As MagicBoy said it's about $15 per track and $12 per car.

As an example, if I were to run in the Skip Barber series for the rest of this season, it would cost me a total of $51.14, or somewhere around £30. Thats 3 tracks and 1 car, less a 10% discount for buying more than three items at once.
