iRacing

It's actually a pretty decent game. Same as Forza, three consoles and three games and the consoles have to be linked via cables to the same network, wifi doesn't cut it.

Considering the hardware I still think it looks good, even by today's standards. The lighting is by far and away the best I've played in a racing game. If had had a bit more anti aliasing and some of the textures were better then it would look as good any next gen game.

The AI is a bit crap, but that's true of a lot of racing games.

The FFB is ok, a bit basic but with all the assists off I think it does a decent job in the physics department.

Some people see the single player aspect as a grind. But I like the challenge of the licence system, trying to gold all of them is a good way to waste a few gaming hours.

Load of updates and free content over the life of the game and they even added an app for tablets to build your own tracks and import them into the game. In fact I don't think there is any paid for DLC out for it. Other than paying real money to get game money to buy cars to make it less of a grind.

The updates that have been released makes updating the base game to the current version a complete pain, that can take days to apply. Especially if you try and do it in one go. I think the total size of all the updates is so large that when its unpacked it's too big for the console to handle and usually fails. Very annoying.

Works with the Fanatec V2 base with any rim, V3 pedals and shifter as long as they are connected to the V2 base.

I believe you get 1024 pedal resolution with the V3 pedals on consoles now. I think the V1 and V2 pedals were only 256.

PlayStation 3's are dirt cheap if you shop around. The last one I picked up cost me £50 with games and two controllers. Sold off the games and extra controller and more or less covered the cost. The extra copies of the game are about £10-15 depending on if you go for new or used. If anyone is thinking of doing it just bear in the time it takes to update each game in each console to the latest version. And although the PS3 is region free, GT6 downloads the update according to the region of the game. I have two EU versions and one USK. The USK version won't run on the machine with the EU update and tries to download it again. The whole updating process for GT6 is a mess but, it is what it is.

Not sure if you can by the game on disk with most of the updates applied.

With the GT3 teams thing, how does that work for the sprint races, does it really affect much and can the drivers run different cars in the same race whilst being part of a team? (obviously an endurance race needs to be done in the same car, not sure if the team=car though otherwise)

I might be interesting in an OcUK team type thing though if others are, hoping to get into racing more next season and at some point endurance racing sounds kinda fun :)

I'm also now tempted to pick up a couple more PS3's... Thanks barmy :p

My PS3 gets used a Blu-Ray player and Netflix box. Maybe I should break out GT6 again and try the Fanatec.

Wonder if a local Proxy server would cache the updates?

I don't think team racing applies to the sprint series.

GT6 supports 5 screens as well. But obviously that's 5 consoles, games and screens. And a lot of room. I think if I had room is be tempted, maybe.

I keep getting tempted to buy some Clubsport V3 pedals, can anyone tell me if they will be a worthy upgrade from G27's with the Nixim mod?

I went from G27 pedals with GTEye spring to CS V2's a while back. It was a huge upgrade to me then, so I can only imagine the V3's are even better. I think once you get a load cell you'll never want to go back. I found my braking became very consistent and I started doing better in races as a result.

I upgraded from V2's to V3's and thought it was worth it. So I don't think you'll be disappointed coming from G27 pedals, even though they've been modded.

I went from the G27 to a used set of CSP v1 (no fancy adjustable dampers or springs). The load cell brake pedal is the biggest plus. Although I do miss the carpet gripper on the G27 pedals - they really need hard mounting.

Anyone use the GT Omega sim rig?

Quite fancy getting myself the pro version with the R9 seat, seems a decent buy for £450ish inc delivery.

Use a fanatec CSW V1 base so just wondering if I would need to strengthen it to stop it twisting with the ffb!

Thanks

I keep adding it to the cart and deleting it. My garage is completely empty now, so thinking of laying carpet and putting the rig in there.

Really hate having to race on a normal office seat, I would prefer more pressure on the pedals but I just roll back on the chair :).

I feel your pain with racing in an office seat. If I had anything with more resistance than potentiometer pedals I'd be halfway across the room by the time I get to turn 1.

I'm looking at a sim-lab.eu 80/20 setup. It's a bit more expensive than the GT Omega (£600 + seat for the GT1 cockpit and triple mount) but it won't flex in any way, which the GT Omega/Obutto do, and it's more easily modified.

I spent over £600 on a Herman Miller chair, and I've resorted to using one of our cheap dining room chairs because the Clubsport V3s require so much force :/

I upgraded my comfy Ikea wheely chair to a 1920's kitchen chair ... originally in my Grandad's kitchen, then my student accommodation and recently re-discovered in the parents cellar.

I had the same problem, I've take the wheels off my chair to solve it!

Best couple of quid I ever spent on sim racing, when using an office chair.

Payed £1.99 for some lovely brown plastic carpet grips from a local hardware store. Allowed to me stamp on both the brake and throttle without moving a millimetre. Prior to that heavy braking into T1 normally resulted in me sliding into the next room.
