iRacing

I thought they did them at specific times of the year, like they always do half-price membership around Thanksgiving iirc, and i thought the other was March, and i have an email from this time last year saying it ends 31s March (and the common 'fancy that, its been extended' email), but checking my purchase history i bought one on Aug 22nd (2014) so i guess maybe that event isnt as predictable.
I bought a load of content at 2x 6 & 1x 3 items, yet the $100 for $75 is still sitting on my inactive account. Typical really.

Seems like people have been waiting a year for it! https://www.reddit.com/r/iRacing/comments/470p6i/100_for_75_when/

So it looks like I can't gain any more MPR unless I buy something.

I could use the Spec Ford Racer and buy the tracks for the "Spec Ford Racer Challenge" series, or buy the Skip Barber and the tracks for the "Skip Barber Race Series".

The SFR seems a little too similar to the MX-5 in terms of power, although it's a bit less tail happy. I'm guessing that the Skippy is the sensible choice if you're going to spend money?

I know it is very tempting to just look at progressing through the licenses. However I would really suggest you think about what you want to race. I did a similar thing, got to A license and then realised the cars I wanted to drive at that point was in a D license. No real harm done, apart from to my wallet. In that sense iracing is different to other games. It is not so much about progressing, unless the series you really want to race is at that license level. You will soon realise going through the licenses are pretty easy and not really a progression. Skippy and the SFR are good cars with good communities. However I am a tin top guy and never enjoyed either of them. These days I am mainly racing GT1 and GT3. So I progressed through the lesser loved cars like the Solstice and Mustang.

So what would you really like to drive? I hope you get what I am saying, there is no wrong way to go about it, but if you don't think about where you want to be you could spend more money than you need to.

Hey jbs, thanks for the feedback.

Quite honestly I'm not exactly sure which cars I like more. I only got into sim racing about 6 months ago, and have been dabbling with Assetto Corsa and more recently Automobilista.

I like cars like the M235i, Ginetta, Caterham and GT3s in Assetto Corsa, and the Formula 3 in Automobilista is my favourite. I think ultimately my aim would be to race the Formula Renault and GT3s in iRacing, but the appeal of low-powered, fun cars like the MX-5 is strong.

I tried RaceRoom Experience last week and in that game I loved the old DTM and new WTCC cars.

I've only had iRacing for 4 days, so I'm probably getting a little ahead of myself. I should try some SFR races since all I've concentrated on so far is the MX-5.

Like I said both SRF and Skippy are very popular cars. As the SRF is free have a look where they run and buy some of the more popular tracks. If you like iracing you will want all the road courses eventually. Every now and then I try something else again like Asetto Corsa, but after 20mins I'm back to iracing again for months before I will try something else. That has been ongoing for the last 4 years. The other games just don't give me the same as iracing.

Have you tried some of the organised races on Racedepartment.com? They're good fun and people behave well. Unfortunately it seems like Automobilista is far more popular on there now, so the AC races are a little empty.

And that's exactly where I am. I've bought the majority of the iRacing road content and yet the racing I enjoy the most is the slower stuff. Maybe I'm just a bit slow(!) but the close racing you get in the slower series is, for me, far more thrilling than the faster ones where a gap of 0.5 seconds equates to a car somewhere off in the distance.

Both the Skippy and the SRF are good fun. I spent a lot of time in the Skippy series and went back to the SRF once I knew better what I was doing and I really enjoyed the racing.

I'm just in the process of doing exactly that myself. Can I ask what monitors you bought and why?

Ta.

Hi Chris.

Got them from the classified section over on the iracing forums.
The middle one is a 27" curved, the other 2 are normal. The size and the fact that the middle was curved suited me to a tea.

I don't think I could go lower than 27" due to using a superwide monitor in normal use.

Yeah I fully agree. It's probably why some of the best racing I've had in Assetto Corsa has been in the Caterham mod.

Too bad you can't demo stuff in iRacing before you commit.

I've not raced an official series in a long time (since the Daytona 24 I think) so I jumped in a RUF Cup race tonight with one of my team mates. Turns out I'm car 2 & he's car 3, I managed to qual 3rd (after a flipping iTunes update caused me to crash in Qual when it tabbed me out!!!!!) I lost a place on the start and after someone behind us ended up on their roof after T1 the rest of the field made it away. Within 2 laps I took 3rd back and then the two leaders had a bump into each other causing both to spin across the track, luckily not taking anyone else with them.

I spent the next 10 or so laps being chased by my team mate who was being closely chased by another car, when the other car made his pass he was on me and I knew with 4 laps to go he would get me at some point. Unfortunately he clipped me in one of the tight turns (Interlagos GP) and it caused me to spin, meaning I came home 4th but my team mate managed to get the win :D

Quite an eventful race all things considered and I just cracked 3500 irating for the first time, even though I lost a little safety rating from the incident :)

Thanks. I've been looking at 3 x BenQ GW2760HS - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/benq...-free-slim-bezel-monitor-black-mo-089-bq.html

No idea whether or not they're a good bet, but they're the right size and the right resolution. 60hz seems am acceptable target for me as putting together a PC that could give me higher framerates than that would cost far too much.

Those look spot on mate, any idea what the input response time is, as that's what you are wanting to be as low as possible with racing sims.

60Hz is enough for me on triples as well, all in all I have just spent.
£450 for rig.
£340 monitors.
£680 for PC (inc a 980 from MM on here).
£100 on headphones and a 5Ghz wifi usb thingy.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKK!!!!!!!!

£1570 : Jesus wept, thankfully I'm single or my kahoonies would be getting kicked :)

They quote 4ms response time, although real-world results are likely to vary wildly from that claim.

There's a lengthy review here - http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/benq_gw2760hs.htm

From that review, regarding real-world responsiveness, "It should be able to handle some moderate gaming fine, as it's not as slow as some older generation VA panels certainly. Those wanting to play fast FPS or competitive games may want to consider some of the more gamer-orientated 120Hz+ compatible displays out there."

I can get that monitor for £139.64, so I'm prepared to accept a few failings at that price!

I used to use 2 of those monitor as part of my triples setup, I don't think they can be beaten for price/performance. I think they had low latency too. I think Spunkey uses 3 in his setup now.

MarkeR, it's a slippery slope hey!

Good to hear, thanks.

I'll be back for some more info regarding my pending triple-screen setup soon, so prepare yourselves for more questions...!

I've not tried this no. A big part of what I like about iracing is how for most part I don't have to plan when I am going to race. The added bonus in something as popular as the GT3's is that I get placed in a race with 29 other people with similar pace/skills than me. So even I'm not that fast there is always a chance in these races to do well or even get ever elusive win.

Contact iracing support and see if they can transfer the credit over to your new/active account.

They are usually quite good about things like that!

They might, but im the one opting to keep it inactive. I played it for about 7 months and enjoyed it, but i got to the point where i missed feeling like i was in a community, and missed racing with friends. What i needed was all my old race buddies not growing up and doing sensible stuff while i continue my early-teen approach to life as i enter my late 30s :(

I just need a reason to go back, but im stuck in a place of not wanting to buy a sub and get bored soon after and waste credit, and not want to waste money buying credit i'll never use as it stands.

Yeah, thats pretty much what i went through. ~700-800 for the R3v, the monitors were £320 on offer that week on here, and a handful of other bits (290x, HOTAS, buttkicker) but oddly having had no interest in flight sims or space, it was a space sim that pushed me to buy it all (and being in a very rare position to be able to do something that stupid).

At least with a good cockpit/desk/rig whatever, thats going to last a heck of a long time and hold a decent amount of value too, compared to PC hardware for example. If you go cheap like the £150 playseats or w/e we have these days, i feel like i'd regret it and wish i'd held out a little longer for the better version etc, and potentially waste £150 when i buy the one i should have bought anyway.

Got two display port to hdmi cables delivered this morning.

All set up and ready to go.

Had a quick practice session around Philip Island in the FR2.0, ran my fastest time by nearly a second, braking points are absolutely being nailed :)

Adjusted the in car cockpit view to raise it higher, which coincides with my head placement. Made a huge difference to the feel of speed and being able to see the apex easier.

Still got a couple of cables to tidy up and that is it finished.
