Dont progress too fast mistake I made was going up to A/B class stuff before really learning my race craft and then got frustrated when I was a mobile chicane.

Start with a rookie series like MX5 and in the first couple of races just try make it round without any mistakes, don't race other people too hard. I would make sure you can do the full length of a race in practice with not many mistakes before doing an actual one.

Just started streaming my racing on Youtube! Seems to go ok, apart from very little viewers on YT compared to Twitch. Just cannot stand the quality of the encoding that twitch hit you with unless you're a partnered channel!

Anyway, window!

Prepare for a learning curve.
There are 2 paths you can take, oval or road.
Both start in the rookie class with free tracks and free cars. I would suggest whatever route you take, start at the back of each grid. You will not be fast enough to race at the front, nor will your race craft be up to speed compared to some of the guys at the front.

Practice yourself for a few hours before going online, then practice for a few hours with other cars around you, even though you might be the safest driver out there, many are not that safe..

Only when you feel confident enough to be driving around other drivers at racing speed would I join an official race. Start at the back and stay on the black stuff, if you see someone going to dive bomb you at a corner, let them have it, chances are you will pass them when they smash into a wall 3 corners later!

Earn your SR, get out of rookies and then decide what cars you want to drive.

You can stay in rookies until D 4.0 of your SR licence, so that would give you loads of experience.

ANy more help just ask.

The whole point of Rookies is to get out of Rookies :)

All you need to do to achieve that is to race clean - not fast. You get your D license based on your Safety Rating (SR) which you earn by staying on the track and not hitting any one or any thing. iRating (IR) is largely irrelevant at this stage.

Use official practice sessions to get a feel for being around other drivers. Mistakes you make in practice don't harm you safety rating at all or that of other drivers.

For me i learn better in the races (correct lines/braking points) however to stop that ruining your SR/irating, Race in spectator mode. You can use it as a test session but be chasing other cars around as well, without any risk at all :)

This assumes he's completely new to racing sims.

I won 2 of my first 5 races in iRacing and was easily more comfortable than the majority of the Rookie class driving and racing at the front. The back/mid pack in Rookies is far more likely to be filled with people who are inexperienced and so not really great to learn against.

Always try and compete with people better than you. You've gotta push yourself if you want to get better.

I do agree that he should spend plenty of time testing alone first, though.

There's also a really cool feature where you can join a race that you're not actually competing in and 'ghost' race others. This can be pretty useful for learning what racing lines and braking points and whatnot the faster guys are using.

That's fine, but get out of the rookies first! ;)
Yea, but the Rookie class still has some competitive people in it.

My point is that you shouldn't start from the back. That just makes your race a potential mess. Qualify as high as you can and try and stay with those in front of you. It's very hard to progress when you're constantly pitting yourself against people who aren't driving very well or are worse than you.

Also, another skill that probably doesn't get much attention but can be quite important - learn to drive at 9/10th's. This may seem like a weird concept at first, as you'd think that just backing off slightly would make things easier, but that's not always the case. At all. It's very easy to get used to driving with your optimum braking points and racing lines and whatnot and that's great if you can consistently hit those, but if you're pushing things, you're risking things. It's good to be able to dial it back at times. Namely - when you're in a secure position, be it 1st, 3rd or 8th, with no potential other than to bring home your car in the position you're in. There's either nobody ahead of you, or the people ahead are too far ahead to catch or are simply too fast to catch. Nobody is threatening you from behind or anything. In these situations, you want to be able to back off a bit and drive more conservatively. But it's *so* easy for this change of pace to throw you off and cause mistakes. You get out of your rhythm and that messes with your ability to be consistent.

You need to be dynamic. You dont want to be a one-gear driver. You need multiple gears and you need to be comfortable driving in those other gears. And obviously you cant back off *too much*. You still need to drive at a close fraction of your full potential.

Cheers for the tips guys. had a couple of oval races but still need more practice. thanks for the spectator/ghost tip, will try that out next.

Yea, but the Rookie class still has some competitive people in it.

I didn't say otherwise. Even I can jump in a rookie class race should I choose to do so. My point is that rookie is there to earn SR so you can progress as soon as possible. There's no point risking SR for a couple of positions that won't earn you anything past bragging rights for the session. iRating isn't active until the D license, and everyone starts off at the same level after graduation.

Absolutely loving the Indy cars at Daytona this week, mentalness and speed what can't you love about it. Had a top speed of 244mph while in the draft :)

Hey magic, even had Pete Newnam make an appearance, thought his hands were glued to the Optima's wheel :)

Does anyone else stream? I have begun streaming to youtube rather than twitch, mainly because of the encoding rate, 2000on twitch compared to 5500 on YT, no comparison on quality! Unfortunately tons more people on twitch though.

I'll take a look, sounds like a challenge. Pete's a good lad, met up with him at one of the BTCC rounds. Not seem him in an Indycar before though!

Disappointed i'll miss the 24hr this weekend, but the local BTCC round comes first...

I know the season is almost over but I'm so done with FRs. 4 races in a row I have been taken out by somebody trying a stupid over taking manoeuvre or the guy in front spinning and taking me with him. Any suggestions for series where 50% of the drivers aren't complete idiots?

Eh, nope!!!!

Lol.

My Skippy experience has been very positive this season.

16 starts with 1 lucky win

All but two of my races were clean with one incident being my fault and the other a netcode issue.

Also managed to get my iRating back to over 2500 from just under 2000 and my SR up from around 2.3 to over 4.6

I don't think anyone really races the Radical any more

Not sure what Star Mazda is like since the FR came out, sadly you're going to get idiots in any of the popular series

GT3 is rife with crashes, I think it tends to be the less popular series with a smaller group of regular drivers that have clean racing. Lotus 79 has good clean racing but there aren't many full grids I don't think

I've had some great races in the skip and I think a lot of morons have transferred to the FR now so might be worth running that?

There is also the new Proto/GT class but I have no idea is that will be an HPD wreckfest or not
