iRacing

... for the tracks and cars...

:p

I understand they're optional, but I will be wanting to buy some at some point if I end up enjoying the game. I'll be trying it out for the 3 months to see what it's like.

I feel you may have taken my point a bit out context, because I can use the wheel for every driving game I play, but iRacing is asking £7.50 per car and some tracks, and more for other tracks, plus the subscription to the game itself, so I feel my point is well justified. I'm not arguing it's not worth it, because clearly a lot of work has gone into it, but if you look at the overall cost, it certainly isn't cheap. I probably could have been a bit clearer on the whole trying vs. continued subscription thing, though.

Laguna Seca is among the free tracks, and as a Rookie you'd start with the Mazda MX-5 which isn't too bad, and again it's free like all 'Rookie' content.

Of course, by 'free', it's more 'included in basic subscription'...

Good stuff. It's got to be worth the $12 to try it for a bit :)

Tediore, there is, imo, enough content included in the basic package (eg the try for 3 months for $12 stuff) to keep you busy and give you a good indication of whether it's worth investing further. iirc the default content is:

Mazda MX-5 Cup and Roadster (two different cars, but same series)
Spec Racer Ford
Pontiac Solstice
Legends '34 Coupe Rookie and Advanced
Streetstock

Charlotte, USA, South Boston, Lanier (Ovals)
Summit Point, Laguna Seca, Lime Rock Park and Okayama (Roads, plus Charlotte has a road course or 2 as well)

The most popular affordable ones is the Logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT), think they go for around £70-80 and are a good wheel, downsides being poor paddles and pedals.

Next step up is the Logitech G2x series, more like £160+ depending on sales etc, overall wheel isn't significantly better than the DFGT but the paddles are nicer and the pedals are a lot better. I've used a G25 heavily for the past ~3.5 years and it's still going strong.

Then you've got the Fanatec wheels for the £2-300 range, and then the Frex/ECCI wheels for £1000+, but guessing that won't interest you much :)

Thanks SKILL - I might skip the Frex/ECCI wheels for now... haha :)

Clearly the DFGT one is the way forward and you never know, there might be a bargain to be had on MM (once I get to the post count) or Ebay.

My only concern is that I get one and end up disliking the game, but I've always enjoyed racers (Forza, GT etc). Appreciate this is a level or two up from them, plus I never really tinkered too much with setups, so it is a touch daunting.

I'll go for a proper read up tonight I think !

anyone no when this offer runs out ? currently got a free month running till end of April.

But will have to pick this up before it runs out Gravey as me addicted :*(

Well if you bought your wheel and pedals for Dirt 3 and TDU:2, you have have wasted your money on decent hardware for games that feel better on an xbox 360 controller.

Definitely give iRacing a go and get some decent use out of your setup.

Definitely enough there to decide if I'm going to invest further :)

My previous wheel was a Logitech Momo I picked up on the cheap a while back, but the potentiometer (I think that's what it is) is playing up, so I'm going to attempt to fix those, and my brother can have them, and I treated myself to the GT3RS.

Granted, TDU2 isn't exactly amazing with any form of controller, but I thought the DiRT series was pretty damn fun with a wheel, honestly... I'm not always after precision sim racing, though. I just figured I'd get a better wheel and give them a go as well :D

iracing is really good with a wheel, dirt 2 feels really canned and flat in comparison :)
theres a inside sim racing offer on which includes nascar truck and michigan for some bargin price :)

aye nice to see you in there mate..

you will get there in the radical mate takes a while to get on the pace but when you do its so much fun...

Plus we should be getting the Cadillac in a few weeks.

josh I'm struggling abit round Suzuka if I'm honest, peeps are banging out 56 laps ding dong and I can't get out the 57s for love nor money, but my opt is 55.7. mind as much as I love this track I've never been the quickest round it same with spa, but racing will be epic round it...

simon hit a 55 flat aswell with a opt of 54.5, you should try his set it's very good and Paul's is...

spils not sure when the offer runs out but it's been going a while now.

also we're getting a RUF car...

I agree, also recently joined after being hesitant and I love this sim. I see you said you go wiped out and had to retire. Remember in Rookie races you get a free repair. It is worthwhile continuing with a race even if you are behind, as you are hurting your irating and SR by not running for as long as you can. When you pit for the free repair just remember to switch off the tyre change and fuel fill up by unticking the boxes when pressing F4 and F5 - took me a while to figure out why I never get a free repair!

ahhh thats why :) cheers

Not sure when it runs out, I'm fairly sure though that you can't apply it to an existing sub, you could just setup a new sub though but you'd end up with a crappy name ('Jim Bob2' etc)

Cadillac could be interesting I think, even if it is fugly.

at last i was on my own in a practice server and i wasnt leaving it till i broke into the 56's and i did 1.56.570..

what you reckon to this bad boy...https://twitter.com/#!/iRacingMyers/status/184724616923725824/photo/1

Nice, you done any long runs yet, I'm thinking now that 'good' race pace will probably be in mid-high 57's right from the start...

Really annoyed I couldn't do a 56 last night, was overdriving it, the 57.1 I did had such a scruffy first sector there's easily enough just there to get into the 56's let alone the rest of the lap. Did do a few awesome S1's (and I think got my optimal below the 56's) but always screwed up the rest of the lap...

The RUF is gonna be fun in an utterly insane way, not sure I'd ever race it but will drive it :p I have a feeling it'll be like the Silver Crown and Sprint Car oval cars, both have >850hp in a fairly light/simple chassis, the aim of the game is semi-controlled powersliding, great fun :D

Ive not done any long runs yet, I was getting annoyed and like you over driving so I had a brake come back and I was better then, I did my pb with paul thurstons set its proper good if he doesn't post it on the forum il share it wil you, he also shared a race set not tried that yet tho...

my opt is 55.5 now but u won't get in the 55's I don't think...

the RUF is defo gunna be mental 750bhp and rear wheel drive is gunna be a hand full...

If you're on later it would be good to give it a go (he hasn't posted it yet, might PM him to see if he'll send it to me :))

I was thinking a bit earlier about racing here, and overtaking could be interesting, can think of a few places but think I'm gonna need to practice the line to make sure I can do it without screwing up as I can't see it being easy to get a run into some of the slower corners.

Yeah, I almost want the 4wd version as it might be a touch more controllable whilst still being mental. Still, who knows, it could be fine, they may even get a decent TC system written for it (assuming the real car has TC of course).

Looks interesting. I havent played any Racing Sims since LFS (Live for Speed) Been a good few years since i played that too.

Only got a wireless 360 wheel wonder how responsive that will be. hmmm
