so i was doing some laps with no shift aid, beat my PB on watkins in the radical within 10 laps 1.05.7 now...
going to keep it off now, will i have to use the clutch myself at the start of the race from the grid??? i dont when leaving the pits when testing...

robmol, yep, definitely worth a try, just the disclaimer that you might get hooked like gimpymoo and GraveYard have (and myself, but that was years ago now

Clutch, there's always a certain level of auto-clutch, basically stops you stalling, so if you're in the pits (whilst not actually being serviced) you can just shift into first and accelerate and it'll go no problems. The issue being that's not particularly fast, for the race start you want to be in 1st with some revs (almost bouncing off the limiter really) before going on green, so yeah you'll need to hold the clutch at that point.
It's a bit tricky to get off the line as it will spin up but my method is basically hold it just before the limiter/slowly bouncing off it, then on green I drop the clutch, initially go full throttle but then feather it a bit as the wheels start spinning to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Took about 5 minutes of practice just going around the track doing practice starts up into 2nd and then back to stationary, repeat over and over again, but I'm fairly happy with it for now, could be more consistent but not lost any spots on the grid and gained one twice

Cannot find my wheel, must have got lost/chucked during the many moves I had last year 
. Any of you guys use an Xbox controller? Spent countless hours on Forza quite competitively but I guess those with wheels will always be slightly advantaged...

this games starting to get old very fast now...
1st lap again long straight 2 cars lost it i slow down to avoid, as i was going round them another Muppet rammed straight in the back on me, got back to the pits and 15 mins to fix...getting fed up now...
its not even like it was bottom div drivers they were all above 5...
15 mins in the pits and i come out and struggle on the right hand bends...
damn racing games, suppose i got to take the with smooth...

It's hard to say anything beyond what's already been said previously, certainly without seeing the incidents or really how you drive.
But there is one thing that might help, you're reasonably fast, but as of last night you hadn't qualified, and combining that with your low irating means you start right at the back opening yourself to every possible idiot on the grid.
So there's two solutions to that, either start from the pits, you lose ~8-10 seconds from the very back of the pack but due to them fighting each other and the fact that you've got pace you'll make up a good 3 or 4 seconds before the end of the first lap easily, so in the course of a 45 minute race it's a nothing and you simply won't be involved in an early race incident.
Second option of course is to qualify, it's something I should do more but my irating helps protect me a bit (as well, frankly, as my experience in the sim), but if you put down a 1:05.7 in qualifying you'll be ahead of some of the more hectic bits, not a perfect cure as you'll still be mid-pack in some races but better than right at the back by far.
Ultimately though I've done 5 races now, had a self-spin in one and hit the wall in another, an 3 completely clean races. Now I'm not going to be significantly better than you at car control if the difference in lap times is sub 2 tenths, nor do I start from the front of the grid, which kinda just leaves observation/avoidance, knowing when you can push someone, when you need to just let an idiot dive down the inside, etc etc, it's something that's frankly easier in the slower cars.

yeah think i might do quali for laguna seca, im not racing watkins gain in the radical..
TBH my game plan was to start at the very back so i never did quali and then that way i could sort of avoid the muppets and make my way through the grid, but seems its back fired on me it worked well the first few races...

I do find that the races get more and more aggressive as the week goes on, start of the week generally is nice and relaxed and hence cleaner, I even find my own attitude changes a lot to where I expect to get higher by the end so I get more aggressive to do that, silly really but hey
Starting from the back can be good, I do it regularly but my irating does have a habit of putting my just behind the qualifiers which is generally just ahead of the nutters, and even then it's not unusual to be caught up in something at times.

This is still driving me mad
Got my SR up a bit... but first in a race, make a balls up... correct it and get back on track not far from where I left it - 2nd is nearly on my ass... damn game tells me I've cut the corner, gained time and must slow down. So much so... the guy who was the full length of lime rock park pit-straight behind me is now the same distance ahead of me just because of the stupid system... why can't it use car positioning to figure out if you've actually gained or lost time!? Stupid ****ing thing...

Not really much you can do for looks afaik, some people run AA via the CCC to get a bit better performance but never noticed a huge difference. Since my last windows/iracing installs (when I got my 6950) I'm running stock CCC settings fine.
Do remember though to go to the iracing graphics settings, and at the top fill in all the boxes for visible screen width/bezel size etc etc, and select 3 screens from the drop down box and check the 'render screens seperately' or something like that box, that sorts out the bezel correction (and probably easier/better than any other game I know)
That would be plenty, especially if you've clocked the cpu a bit, I'm running 3x 1920x1200 and I was doing it on a E8400 (Core2Duo) @ ~3.6GHz on a 5850 1Gb but had to turn down AA and a couple of other settings. I then upgraded to a 2Gb 6950 (but with the 6970 shader count, and overclocked to somewhere in between, CCC max) and clocked my CPU to 4.2GHz with the help of a kuhler 620 and I'm running all settings at max including AA
tbh I think the CPU and 2Gb VRAM are pretty much the important bits, it's not the most graphically advanced game in the world
