Is East London a dangerous place to live?

Where is Top Boy on Netflix based upon?

How accurate is their depiction of the drug and gang culture?

If it wasn't for the accents - it could be Manchester, or Birmingham, or Liverpool

London is 8x and he size of Birmingham, and 18x the size of Manchester and Liverpool.

Numerous areas are absolutely fine I've lived in Richmond, Twickenham and Putney over the past few years. All very safe, very green and really nice areas to live.
I lived in Barnes and got assaulted on the way home one night. No area of any major city is immune from it, just need to be a bit switched on.

I say no major city, no major city in the UK where we've had a government for the past generation that has dismantled all our education, youth services, policing, no surprise problems are rife. It's what people vote for though. *shrug*

I live further north in enfield, I've never seen an area of islington that's what I'd consider nice, expensive yes, but just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's good. Then again, enfield has some crap areas too.

I worked with a woman in her 60s about 10 years ago, sounded straight out of eastenders, told me how some car dealer sold her son a cut and shut car. He then went on to have an accident in it not too long later where they realised, he was very lucky to be alive. She said her sons and husband went back and took him for a little ride - smashed his knee caps and left him in a field. It must have shown on my face that I thought she was joking so she then proceeded to justify it. That made me feel like I'd just entered eastenders.

You mean Amazingstoke.
Ah yes amazing, I will never forget the time I was pinned against a wall with a knife at my throat by some ****** lunatic in Basingstoke town center.

That said it was never that bad when I went to school there, there weren't any neighbourhoods you'd avoid at night or anything.

The issue is not that London has got worse, it is that the UK has got worse. The Tories cut all of the Police officers, social services etc. But it is easier to be a bit racist and blame black people instead.

Basingstoke is much worse than a lot of areas in London.
I have been there much in the last 15 years. It was boring and grey and with sod all to do but it was pretty safe overall)(my run in with a loony tune notwithstanding).

You might run into some pillocks if you're in the town centre at kickout time, but most of the neighbourhoods were fine. Maybe it's got worse.

The area around Festival Place, the station and where CeX is (was?) is properly grim.

Properly grim relative to what? I think you've lived a sheltered life if you think any bit of Basingstoke are that bad. Train stations are always rough.

Compared to say, the rough bits of Derby or Hull, Basingstoke is positively bourgeoisie.

I used to live in Hull. Hull is worse than Basingstoke absolutely.

But I’d say the grimmest parts of Basingstoke are significantly worse than parts of London.

On Saturday, my wife and I and my child went to East London, Newham to do a little shopping and break our fast.
We were there for nearly 3 hours from 3.30pm. Here are the series of events in that time.
1. As we exited the market area 4 youths were fleeing from a bakery called G____ holding numerous baguettes and drinks.
2. I was nearly hit by a vehicle that veered at speed into the wrong side of the road.
3. An e-scooter came onto the pavement and brushed me. I shouted at the youth, "you *** if you feel you must swear, you should fully star it out, not just partially ***” The Asian youth approached me and started swearing. When I became aggressive he moved away and joined a group of youths. I walked away hastily.
4. We passed a jewellery store which had lots of white smoke emerging from the open door. Shoppers were running out. I think a smoke bomb may have been used.
5. I was ordering food from a fast food store called k__. My wife was sitting upstairs waiting for me. When I came upstairs my wife informed me that two men tried to take someone's handbag.
Is this typical or was I just unlucky?

I would not live in this place.
Its not great where I live but no where near like this.

Couldn't handle living somewhere like this. But I'm not really used to it.

Most parts of London have bad areas, I've lived all over West London and there are rough areas there too.
Thing is most of the worlds big cities have rough areas, some are worse then others.
