Is it ok to be proud to be white?

What's the point in this thread? Everyone on Overclockers is:

- conservative Republican, with the true sense of the word. Against the nanny totalitarian state UK has become. Many are patriots also.
- white depends, some are darker skin, non British, but still classed white.
- male - given the hobby.
- cis
- middle aged
- able bodied
- pro fox hunting Doubt anyone has grabbed a gun to hunt in here except me, and that for food. Rabbits and boars.
- pro brexit against another nanny totalitarian corporate lobby.
- high blood pressure. When dealing with brick walls.

Basically, gammon. - Look at the mirror

fixed it for you.

Nationalism, patriotism and Pride in general seems so out of place in a global internet era.

The internet came about as a combination of US and UK (WWW) technological development, why not be proud of it?

China's internet is heavily censored by their increasingly authoritarian government, why shouldn't Americans be proud of their constitutional freedoms? (I would include UK in being a free country but we're quickly going the way of China)

Be proud of achievements, things that you have done, supported, been a part of. Not something you had no control over/born into.

Or does that automatically make you racist?

I do not think that this would ever be acceptable for a white person to say. What do you think?

Come in late to this thread but the fact you had to ask in the first place and have made it an issue, then yes, you are.. Your pride makes you feel superior to another group, which is discriminating and prejudice, the true definition of being racist. So the question is why do you feel the need to be proud of being white, black, pink, or mauve? You are who you are.

The only thing I take pride in is the things that myself, my family and friends have achieved.

Do you feel the same way when you see black people saying to other black people that they should be proud to be black?

I don't think being proud of something implies that something is superior. You can be proud of your kid when they play 3 blind mice at their first piano recital, it doesn't mean you think they're a superior child to any other child, or that their pianistic ability is superior to others.

And with that your argument kind of falls over.

I think pride in something is more something you are happy to share with someone, I'd say it's opposite is shame. It's quite hard to define what it is though.

Yes I do. All groups of people can discriminate, and often do.

You are consistant.

My personal view is that everyone should be proud of all the identities they have.

I become aware of my own identity after being around the Bangladeshi community and seeing how they look after their families and help each other out.

It made me appreciate my own culture more. White people have given me more problems than any other race. But I am white, and the only way to change that is to own it and be a part of the solution.

I love how you have a union jack as your signature.

I'll take your argument though, I'm a product of my culture, any success I have is possible because of the achievements of my ancestors. I am proud to be British because my ancestors created one of the greatest countries on Earth and I am able to live in it.

Aha aye, that's exactly it. If you're born white, male and preferably English/American you've already gotten a decent pay out from life xD

Exactly. Being born white gives you a statistically greater chance of being born in a half decent first world nation (or alternatively, the USA) and that's nothing to sneeze at.

'Pride' when applied to being black ('Black Pride') or gay ('Gay Pride'), for example, is not at all about feeling superior to other groups. It's about promoting these traditionally maligned, or marginalised, or suppressed groups as being as worthy as the dominating groups (straight/white etc).

Which is, of course, why trying to angle for 'white pride' is not the same thing at all: you're not trying to level the playing field, because your group already stands advantageously to others.
