It sends a strong message that Israel isn’t alone and not to get involved. It’s a massive deterrent. Plus it helps secure supplies going into Israel in case they get cut off for some reason.

And yet as I was typing my post Hamas and Hezbollah told the US to stay out of it and there are reports of Syria launching missiles. So much for that deterrent.

Hamas don't have the capabilities to prevent miltary aid convoys, neither do Hezbollah, not unless Iran decides to rebase and rebadge it's entire airforce with Hezbollah livery and drop it all off in Syria or Lebanon and even then it wouldn't be enough to prevent US military drops by air or sea

Missiles coming from Syria and Syria launching missiles are different. If Syria declares war then that’s an escalation and no doubt there will be a response. They are also vulnerable to retaliation by Iraq and SA so it would be a brave move by Syria.

I haven't read all the posts in this very long thread so I apologise if this has been mentioned elswhere.

The IDF historically has not attacked indiscriminately. A few years ago when attacking locations rockets where launched from they used to phone the property and tell them they were going to use artillery. Apparently according to our Home Secretary they currently often use a "light" artillery shell to mark the location that does minimal damage then use a "heavy" artillery shell to obliterate it. This gives civillians time to escape.

The IDF accepts that collateral damage occurs, killing the wrong people, but that is a byproduct of what is happening not the purpose. In addition it must be noted that Hamas deliberately places it's weapons in civilian buildings for the protection it gives and the affect of the retaliation. In a narrow respect the IDF shows more concern for Palestinian lives than Hamas.

When Hamas attacks civillians are the preferred target not a byproduct

I absolutely agree this has historically been the case (usually). But the rhetoric from Israel seems to be one of “no building left standing”.

WP munitions are not considered as "light artillery" when deployed in civillian population centres so you might want to check you facts on that one. You might want to look at WP does when it comes into contact with Human tissue, then come back and say it's "light artillery"

Roof knocks have been a thing for a very long time, but far from certain to get everyone's attention. How much they are and aren't actually used is another matter again.

I'd say the scales were too small here for it to play out like Vietnam when it comes to Gaza (and/or other parts like the West Bank) and with the likes of Lebanon there are internal politics, etc. at play as well - I don't really see Hezbollah getting stuck in beyond some border skirmishes as doing so risks the grip on power they have in Lebanon.

Not exactly the same but the same in the idea they can not win this fight with miliary force alone.
The lesson the US (failed?) to learn was you can not win a guerrilla war with a conventual army and Israel is trying to do just that.

No but if it escalates then anything could happen. Syria or Iran could looks to create an exclusion zone in the med to isolate Israel or just get directly involved. The fuel for this situation to escalate is there. It’s a preventative measure and doubt beyond resupplying they are going to get involved but best be prepared just in case.

An Israeli Major General interviewed on R4 this morning was very clear their enemy was Hamas not the people of Gaza and they would not kill indiscrimately. I'm only in a position to take past actions and declared intent at face value.

Direct your correction to James Cleverly he said it live on radio this morning.

What's skin colour got to do with it? :S

It isn't the first time countries have been deleted, and it won't be the last. The Civilians that want to live in a civilised world need to do their best to get out.
If someone suggested we let Israel be deleted, your reaction would be...?

It's just funny to see the deliberate double standards on full display by those who have decided to actively side with Israel.

I wonder, what’s the point of people moving to a secure area if these guy might be infiltrated? Almost like everyone moves to the secure area and there is nobody around the remaining grounds. What makes people think that even if there was a secure place that wouldn’t prevent the bad ones infiltrate? This is a difficult one because they hide behind the innocents there, which I want to believe there are.
I think the plan is to give everyone in these areas the proverbial anal exam to sort out who's who. (eventually)

yes and US were very clear that their enemy was the pro Saddam zealots and insurgents, but that didn't stop them using depleted uranium shells on civillians in Fallujah.................

Siding with Hamas won't get you many internet points.

Good old Twitter reading a link which then posted a video of a child/teen been beheaded with a small knife on the back of a pickup. Then their head held aloft as a trophy, does the human race learn nothing.

If we lived thier we would never get over any of it, on any side and until one side prevails peace can never happen.

Still cannot get how a population of millions suffer for the actions of a few, religion the ender of world's.

EU already on Elon, given him 24 hours to respond
