iTunes Match is live...

If you disable iTunes Match on the phone, then sync it, then re-enable iTunes Match on it, does it (despite the warning) not keep the music already on the phone there? Might be worth a shot, just make sure the songs you sync are also 'in the cloud' first else they'll be removed when you re-enable Match.

EDIT:

I can confirm that the above does work, the music synced prior to re-activating iTunes Match stayed on the device as downloaded (and could be deleted/redownloaded as if it had been downloaded to the device directly)

Forgot to mention - this did work perfectly, cheers :)

Seems to be tags. It would take 10 times as long to analyse using audio like shazam

Surely though that would mean you could just rename your mp3s to get everything (or 25,000 songs at least) on iTunes for free? I can't see Apple or the record labels allowing that?

In theory you could. All I know is that after renaming all my tracks they matched perfectly. Maybe it checks the length too because the 3 tracks that it hasn't matched for me are a few seconds shorter then the ones on itunes

Has anyone tried just renaming a random mp3's tags yet to something they don't have to see if iTunes actually lets you get hold of an 256kbps AAC version of what you've typed in?

If so... why isn't this the biggest story on the net right now?

Just tried - doesn't work.

So I've been using the extremely annoying and temperamental program Tune Up (I do NOT recommend this program!) to clean some of my albums, I have a large collection and even though it was (say 80% clean) I've been through and cleaned what remained, I've also deleted some old rubbish and added some new albums and finally I've reorganised continued releases (like Clubland 1-20 for example) that were out of place or not showing together correctly. The collection is probably as clean as I can get it....

I've allowed iTunes Match to upload new albums but as I've been clearing up, changing things it doesn't seem Match is updating song titles & album names as I have been doing in iTunes, anyone any advice?

I've done 'Update iTunes Match' a few times but checking on my phone it doesn't match (the cleaning/updating) to what I've done to my main library.

Is this a big oversight by Apple? Will it mean I'll have to delete and start again? Anyone understand what turning off iTunes Match does (does it delete the whole thing off iTunes server)?

I'll have a gander on the community boards later but wanted to see if anyone else here has encountered this annoyance!

Surely if the songs aren't ones being uploaded to iTunes match would mean they use the data as per iTunes. And the song's being uploaded to iCloud, surely it would recognize it and not let you reup hence your problem

Crud Example:

Using Clubland again, I have every one (1-20), now some songs were not showing up as joined to the album, or the album had Vol. or something else in the title, or album art missing. If iTunes Match doesn't match, which it hasn't for some of the albums, it'll upload them regardless. Now if after that I rename the album correctly, join up things and make sure they are all named correctly, album art is all appearing and they appear chronologically in my iTunes album view, does iTunes Match pick up those small changes?

When in album view on my iPhone, going down to C, the Clubland albums still appear out of order, Clubland 19 for instance doesn't appear but does when I search for it?

It should make the changes to the cloud copy when you update iTunes Match, although it may not make the changes on the phone if the tracks are downloaded to the phone already (haven't tested this myself although album art does update for these). I would suggest turning iTunes Match off on the iPhone and then back on to force the library to update, keeping in mind any downloaded tracks will remain on the phone.

Really, I've found it excellent, lots of my albums had missing or incomplete data, TuneUp has done an excellent job of fixing the track details and finding the album art. This means that Match has had a much better chance of finding the album and "matching" it correctly.

I can't imagine that ITunes match just works with the filename, I would imagine that it uses a number of "matching" criteria such as the digital fingerprint of the file etc.

After a lot of initial teething problems with Match (which completely screwed up my music on my iPhone!) I now have an annoying problem where album art doesn't seem to have been transferred to my iPhone.

Whenever I play a song on my phone, it has to download the cover art, then I have to back out to the tracklist and then hit the "Now Playing" button for the art to show. It seems to save the art for that track from that point onwwards, but it doesn't fix it for all tracks in the album.

A quick google suggests it might be down to oversized album art and a resize to 50x50 will fix it, but as I have an iPad that shows album art in full screen, a 50x50 image would look terrible blown up to fit the screen.

It's a real pain!

Probably uses something similar to MusicBrainz, where an Acoustic ID is generated from the song and then matched to songs on Apple's servers.
