January 9 Launch Date for AMD Radeon HD 7900

7970 should be around £450 to 500,
because my country doesn't have any sort of tax on computer stuff.
say,
£530 is 20% more than the original price .... exclude vat
it should be around the same since uk has vat on it...
anyway i'll still grab one in UK as I'm studying at here hahaha

I want to see a twin frozr version of this, the twin fans always look nicer IMO

You will be looking at 6 months for non-reference versions i'm guessing and maybe even longer and for something like a DirectCu version they always seem to take ages to come out and probably will be even longer wait.

I have decided the same these days to wait for the non-reference versions from now and tired of the blower type cooling on reference cards.

Everyone seems to be talking about the 79xx being released around Jan, but they will definatley be outside of my price range :p .

Will the 78xx be getting released at a later date, say Feb/March? Or will they follow the 79xx quite quickly?

Feb/March for cheaper ones.

It looks like the HD7870 will have similar performance to an HD6970 but has power consumption closer to an HD6850 1GB! Hopefully it also has the ZeroCore technology too which the HD7970 supposedly has. Under 3W at idle looks impressive IMHO.

It would be nice to see the price of the 69** series drop as its been kept very high for quite some time now.

No price drops.

We've just done an order for the very last stocks from HIS and they actually tried to put price up as demand outweighed their supply.

Fact is for £200a 6950 is a good card that can play everything. :)

I'd imagine that if the ATI cards are so expensive there would be no real reason for Nvidia to drop any of their prices either?

No lol.

seems the next upcoming battle will be performance not price ;)

So... my burning question remains, should I cancel my £289 Nvidia 570 GTX 2560MB and wait or not? (In stock on the 23rd of Dec)

I've not cancelled it yet, but still can.

Yep, very impressive idle consumption if true.

I do wonder if that is just 3W when idle using software to use an IGP instead, or maybe they've added the ability to basically use one CU, turn off all but one memory chip and run the bus at 1x, even then 3W is a push.

Could also just be one of AMD's "lets see whose leaking info" slides ;)

A for prices, I wouldn't go with pre-order prices, the first 1-2 to appear are normally exclusively ridiculous and as Gibbo said, pricing is likely still undetermined.

It's not an unknown tactic for ANY new production launch from anyone to leak higher prices both so the direct competition doesn't pre-emptively drop their prices first but also importantly to not kill sales of the existing stock.

If AMD announced today that their upcoming card was 80% faster, would cost £200 and would be available on Jan 9th....... how many £200 6950's would they sell from now to Jan 9th.... answer, none. How many 6950's that whichever store it is that has a 7970 listed at £500, would sell if that pre-order was listed at £300, few to none.

There are tactics in leaks in pricing pre-launch, mostly in an effort for a company to not shoot itself in the foot.

AMD, Nvidia, Intel, doesn't matter who it is, up till you launch your most important goal is selling as much of the old stock as possible, at as high a price as possible because its going to drop in value significantly right after a new launch.

Anyway, one of the more interesting things it looks like considering this gen is, if a 3gb 7970 is £380 and a 1.5gb 7970(if there is one) is £320, which would you buy? I'd probably go bigger if I was using eyefinity, but keeping in mind AMD in almost every single game runs out of memory WAY after Nvidia does with seemingly hugely better texture compression, I'd happily take 1.5gb for a 1080p screen.

More likely that we'll see 7950's with two different memory amounts, however IF it has a cut down bus, it might be more along the lines of 2gb/1gb options, or maybe 2.5/1.25gb options, I wouldn't drop to a 1gb card, 1.25gb is probably pushing it, 1.5gb likely has plenty of headroom for 1080p for a couple years.

With supposedly 7950's appearing quickly with custom coolers, I'd think lower memory versions will also be available on or near launch unlike the 1gb 6950 coming a bit later.

There is no reason to reduce the prices of the 6970/6950's because the parts that will replace them will not be available till Feb/March maybe even a bit later. So they will be filling that spot till then and by then stocks of these cards will be so low that it will then be wise for AMD to release basically the die shrunk versions and call them 7870/7850's and again price them slightly higher then the 6970/6950's that are still available in stock.

£400-£500 for the 7970 I can't see it.

ATI have typically released their top end at the £300-£350 mark, 5870 was the fastest single GPU for some time and that launched at £300. The only way it's coming in over £400 is if it is more than 100% faster than the previous gen rather than the normal +70% you get with a die shrink historically.

Now then, £430 for a 7950.. hmmm... if I sell my 5850s for say £160 I might be tempted to get on of these bad boys. I'm even more interested as non-reference designs will be available from launch, I'll be looking for a Sapphire version. My Sapphire Extreme 5850's run very cool and the fan is very quiet, if the Sapphire 7950's are the same I'll be 99% sure to get one on launch!

We should be seeing reviews on the first few days of the new year right? Also hearing the power consumption will be less that the 6xxx series I wont have to upgrade my Corsair HX620 PSU! :)

pretty good card for the price.
the new cards are high end not middle performance, which is feb/march/april

if one plays at 1920x1080 or such, one dont need more power unless one wanna do silly AA levels.
