January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

Maybe not entirely tosh on the image rights thing, Baz:

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "Reliably informed that talks on image rights and salary (approx 175k/week) are all that remains forTorres deal to be completed."

Why would Chelsea and Torres not agree personal terms before today? They were always going to be pushed for time to do the deal as we weren't selling until they met our demands and we found a replacement.

Everything's already agreed.

Yeah but if Carroll himself didnt want to go and had to be pushed into it by Ashley then surely Carroll would have wanted Newcastle to pay him more and so wouldnt have put in the request??
Even if he didn't like Ashley or Pardew pushing him out the door, maybe he likes the club in general enough to not want to squeeze a last few hundred grand out of them.

Would the club be that bothered by a few hundred grand? I had assumed it would be millions, could be that Carroll is a better man than me, but if my boss wanted to force me out of a job and if I didnt go "willingly" I could get several million, I'd certainly not hand in a resignation :D

I just think that Carroll did want to go, as painful a thought as that might be.

I love the amount of Chelsea fans who actually think Torres could win them the league this season! They're 10 points behind United, 4 behind City (albeit with a game in hand) and 5 behind Arsenal. It basically means they need to beat those 3 teams in all their remaining head-to-head games and hope they drop points against other teams while remaining almost perfect themselves.

At the risk of making a Hansen-esque comment I'm going to confidently say Chelsea are not going to win the league, no chance. CL and FA Cup are the best they can hope for, with the latter being the more realistic hope.

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry whenever I hear that we're signing Carroll for £35m.

Even if this lad lives up to his full potential and with the English premium, he'd still barely be worth £30m.

Apparently NESV misunderstood Kenny when he asked them to get him somebody offensive...

In all seriousness, what do you think of Carroll? I'm really undecided. It's a LOT of money and he is not worth it based on his talent. I think that Kenny's trying to buy somebody who can become Liverpool's new hero - a modern day Fowler, Rush, Keegan. While Torres is/was remarkable and loved by the fans, it is difficult to get completely and utterly behind most foreign players as there's always the belief that they will move on. Torres was never loved like Fowler, for example.

I also think that with the signings of Suarez and Carroll it looks like Kenny's totally changing the way that Liverpool play. If we get Adam as well, it looks like he's trying to turn back the clock to the days of pass and move football with an English core to the side, and Carroll will be there to tuck in the goals at the end of the passing.

I'm not saying it will work, and I'm not saying that Carroll's worth the money, but I hope that there's some reason behind the fee which are better than simple panic buying.

To take an extreme, if one season Carrolls goals win the Premier League , for me he would be worth £300m let alone £30m :)

As you've said, we still have to play united twice. It's very unlikely but not impossible.

I agree with that, even though its only 1 player out and 2 players in, it really feels like the winds of change, significant change. A core change that time will tell whether was right or wrong.

With the blips Arsenal and Manjoo have had all seasons, and Citeh being Citeh, I can easily see them trouncing us each head-to-head each time if they pull their act together and have Torres firing on all effeminate cylinders.

Yeah because this season so far has been entirely predictable so far with no-one dropping points right, left and centre. Least of all the current leaders :p

But that's assuming that United, City and Arsenal all slip up, that Torres settles straight away, and that Chelsea improve as a whole. It's a big ask. Granted, like Gustov says it isn't impossible, but it's a massive ask for a team that have looked less than impressive for all but the first month or two of the season.

Next season is a totally different matter, Torres will undoubtedly improve Chelsea in the long term and with Malouda and Lampard supplying him he could easily get 25 goals, if not more.
