A few reports are mentioing Porto's cm Fernando (or " The Octopus") as coming to Utd, or Liverpool, before the end of the window for a fee of around £8m ( given that his contract is up in the summer).

Meant to be a handy player and made his name under AVB's treble winning side a few years ago and been an ever present in the team since. Beimg a Portuguese born Brazilian there should be no issue with work permit.

For that kind of fee its hard to complain and already sounds a better option going forward than Fellaini lol, if Utd manage to get him in in the next few days he could really help seal up the midfield.

Errm, as yet he's played in every loss except the City loss this season. He's play in all but 3 games this year in the league, which was one loss and two draws. So losing 63% without him is nonsense(for this season anyway).

Might be true including last season and the team being completely destroyed by injury, but that is a pretty pointless comparison. The team is vastly improved this season down to every single player, not just him. Good player, not irreplaceable, maybe irreplaceable this window.

Not going down this season, getting into Europe this year... look at last year, a solid finish in 7-10th would be a good foundation. Better players generally move on from lower placed clubs, not sure why anyone is surprised. 15-20mil profit depending on final price, not bad.

For a team that has scored 32 goals in total, when Cabaye has a grand total of 2 assists, the idea that there is literally no other creativity in the team somehow rings a little hollow. It's less encouraging that he's scored or assisted just over 1/4 of the teams goals, but that is relatively natural for someone in his position and style. Teams lose players and other players step up, someone else will start in his place and they'll likely get goals, in the ACM position, than they otherwise would.

Maybe you start Arfa and Sissoko starts alongside Tiote and you find both chipping in with goals and assists.

I'm just gonna have to assume you've never watched us play without Cabaye. Sure, he's not the be all and end all, and he was mostly invisible last season, but my god, who is gonna step up? Sissoko, really? Would be nice to have him in the middle admittedly, but he's just not good enough, not at the moment, and especially out-wide.

Nobody is surprised by this by the way. God forbid us ****** teams keep a hold of the good ones eh? It's the lack of a lined-up replacement that is frustrating. The lack of investment in the summer, and the summer before that. We failed to build on the 11/12 season and are still paying for it.

All we are currently is one big Sports Direct advertisement and I know you like to think of us as deluded fans who seem to think we should be winning the league, or finishing top 4 but that's not even close to being the truth. Give us a little ambition, a manager who isn't a coward and maybe a cup run please. Ashley is 100% content with Newcastle being a midtable club, and surprising, it's not fun.

That's precisely the problem: we don't have anyone who can do everything he can do.

Anita can play balls over the top and put in an effective defensive shift, but he'll never be a goalscorer (from any range), he's too reluctant to leave his defensive position, and when he does get forward he lacks compsure in attacking positions. Sissoko will happily hunt down opposing players for the full 90 minutes and he can play a decent through-ball when he plays centrally, but he lacks Cabaye's vision and decision-making and, like Anita, he isn't as much of a goal threat. Ben Arfa is the one player I'd trust to fill the creative void left by Cabaye, but he is nowhere near as useful off the ball.

Try watching us play Norwich tomorrow night - you'll see.

Is he irreplaceable? Obviously there are other players like him out there, but they are not easy to come by for a club like Newcastle. Even if Ashley let Pardew spend the entire ~£25m on a replacement, how many £25m midfielders are going to want to join? Not many, unfortunately.

No one is suprised he's leaving. And I'd like to think that very few fans would begrudge him the transfer. He's the best player to wear the jersey for years, and we just can't give him the level of football he deserves.

Oh wow, I had forgotten all about Anita. Hopefully Pardew sees fit to actually start him tomorrow. Gouffran is now out too by the way. I can see it being pretty grim tomorrow, feeling sorry for ourselves etc.

Maybe this is Hatem's chance to get his ass into gear, although Pardew will probably attempt to play him in a number 10 role again.

I do hope Ben Arfa starts. I'd be quite happy for him to get a go behind the striker. Pardew clearly doesn't trust him to do his defensive duties on the wing and I'd rather see Remy as the lone striker and Ben Arfa at 10 than the old Shola 4-4-2. We just need to find some way of stopping him shooting from impossible distances and angles - electro-shock therapy, perhaps.

I'll take Hatem in goal if it means Shola doesn't start. The persistent shooting can be frustrating, but to be fair he's barely played and clearly wants to impress. Pardew seems to think giving him 10 mins will get him back to his best but he needs to be starting week in and week out to get his confidence and sharpness back. 10 minutes of Ben Arfa is just not enough.

Either way, tomorrow will set the tone for the rest of the season.

Think the fee was over 20million euros so prob is around 19m.

What can you do can't get shirty he wanted to go. To good for us

What an excellent time to sell our best player, 4 days before the mackem game utter genius, we don't have a hope in hell of him being replaced or any players coming in, stand by for the pardew comments of "we didn't have enough time to get one over the line" and "I'm happy with what we have and will go with that"

Sums up the club under Ashley, joke.

Oh well, another derby loss and bottom half the table here we come! Weeeeeeee!!!!!

Another irritating thing which is an idiot Cashley moment is now everyone knows we have almost 20mil to spend and desperately need a CM so prices will go up. Lets face it Cashley was always going to sell him but what he should have done is get the replacement in first to keep prices down.

******* loathe being a Toon fan. Hate my dad for making me one :p

Local press said at the weekend Newcastle would not seek a replacement if he was sold. They believe they already have enough cover and would chase other positions

I'd have been happy with Cabaye for €19m. However I suppose this means we expect 'better' targets to be available in the summer. Can't see us going for any now, though I do think someone is needed with Carrick out for quite a few games.

I'd like to see us get Fernando, he looks a cracking defensive midfielder. Whether we're actually in for him or not, who knows, I haven't seen anything too concrete, it's mostly come from The Times and been reported in Portugal.

Devastated we have sold our best player. I don't blame Cabaye for leaving, the club is showing a real lack of desire to push on.

Gone of the days when we challenged Man U for the title, and played Barcelona in the CL. Now Ashley is content on being a stepping stone club for promising players. Only for the club to take the hit financially. He's yet to actually put any of his money into the club. We still have an outstanding debt over over £100m to him. No one is going to buy him out, ever. He's had free advertising for 2 years now, of which the club has lost out on other form of advertising revenue by pretty much every single billboard being used by his company.

Also £20m for Cabaye! In today's money that is an absolute bargain, we won't find a replacement with that.

Although you have my sympathies, it's never hard to lose your better players so close to the end of the window I don't think he should have to put his own money in. This was realistic in the Jack Walker days at Blackburn but bankrolling the club to challenge for a title and you end up the next Leeds.

As an Everton fan we are in a similar situation, we can finish 5-9th most seasons. Is it worth spending beyond our means to try to finish 5th or 4th if someone in the top 4 has a nightmare? The gap from 5th to the top 4 is so huge financially that I think most owners can't see the point.

As frustrating as it is I don't think he's doing a lot wrong financially. Selling players on when they are worth a fair bit and then scouting again for cheaper players to rinse and repeat.

As an Everton fan, I'm still expecting us to somehow manage to end up getting involved in the merry-go-round out of nowhere on Friday, either buying or selling. Usually hear nothing all window (except how United/Chelsea/City are interested in our best players) and then suddenly seem to launch a splurge of activity with 6 hours to go.
