January Transfer Window 2017/18

It's still not clear why Liverpool might be prepared to entertain a Coutinho transfer now, but not last summer when a replacement would have been much easier to find and integrate.
I don't think it was easier to find and sign a replacement last summer though. It's clear the club wasn't prepared for Barca to come in for Coutinho - although there was a lot of speculation, I think deep down most people thought that PSG weren't going to sign Neymar and thought it would have ended with a new contract instead. Throw into the mix that we were struggling to land our main targets and there was just no way we could sell him without Barca offering mental money. While still not ideal, the club would have been preparing themselves for Coutinho's inevitable departure for the past 5 months, we've got VVD and Keita in the bag already and will no doubt have somebody lined up should Coutinho go.

Given Klopp's whole outlook on management, I'm certain he'd rather have a player 100% committed than somebody that wants to leave and while I'm sure the club would much rather a deal happens in the summer, if Barca offer us huge money and we can get a replacement in then they'll accept.

Why the hell would Sanchez go through this much apathy to then sign for Liverpool? At best that’s a sideways move. I don’t think that would be a good deal for either party. Lemar fine, but I really don’t think he’s going to go to a side that’s going to yo-yo in and out the top 4.

Come on danny, I know you're a blue and all but it would hardly be a sideways step. Arsenal are a club on the decline - they're a complete mess and have been approaching this situation for years, only to be saved by the incompetence of Liverpool and for the odd year, Utd & Chelsea. We on the other hand are very clearly moving forwards - we haven't had City or Utd's money to do things over night but there's been clear progress since Klopp's arrival. This isn't like Rodgers where we were hugely reliant on Suarez/Sturridge - he's building a side that isn't reliant on an individual player. If Coutinho goes we won't fall off a cliff (I believe our record since Klopp arrived is slightly better without him than with him) and you'd back the club to be able to replace him too. We're a side that the for the first time in 10 years appears to be pulling in 1 direction, under Klopp's guidance.

Now despite all that, Sanchez wouldn't choose us over City but that said, I don't think Klopp would want him either. Look at the work rate & energy Klopp wants from his front 6 and then look at any Arsenal game in the past 18 months - Sanchez spends as much time with his hands on his hips sulking as he does running.

Arsenal are on the decline and have been for a decade but they've nearly always topped Liverpool, only United, City Chelsea & possibly Spurs would be a step up in this country for Sanchez.

Sanchez should choose Chelsea but Arsenal wouldn't sell to them I think City will sign him on a free in the summer.

He will probably end up at City but it wouldn't be the best move for him. Jesus and Aguero would probably be ahead of him and I can't imagine he wants to be a super sub. That would be ridiculous though for City. Their forward line would be immense.

Agreed this is a silly move for him after all the hissy fits he went through. Will most likely end up at City although he is just what we need at United.

How is Arsenal to Liverpool a sideways move? Look at the two squads, the set up, the owners (Even FSG are better then that lot), the manager...Its not even comparable. That's without looking at the fact that Liverpool are above Arsenal and in the Champions League.

Arsenal are a sinking ship, they lose a massive portion of their squad this summer and they will have to spend a bucket load to replace them which lets face it, is far from a guarantee.

FWIW I would love Sanchez, it isn't going to happen as we wont pay his wages but not because its not a step up, it is.

Melissa Reddy (reasonably reliable RE LFC) reporting package in excess of 150 million Euros going in for Coutinho.

Edit :

Some reporting it as 160 mil.

That's a lot of money...

As long as a good chunk of it is upfront, that's a great deal. Unfortunately it also means any selling club will be able to demand massive prices, but not much can be done about that.

What have Liverpool won in the past decade? To honestly think Liverpool are a step ahead of Arsenal is just pure fanboyism. Liverpool have been out of the Big 4 for at least 5 years now. Sanchez isn't getting any younger and will want trophies and champions league football. He is not guaranteed that any more at Liverpool than he is at Arsenal who actually have some silverware in recent times.

Im sure what Liverpool won in 2008 has literally no bearing on Sanchez, that's a poor argument imo. Liverpool are higher in the table, in the champions league, have a better manager and are moving forwards. Arsenal aren't.

No offense to Liverpool, but there is no way on earth that Sanchez moves there.

He wants to win trophies, he will end up at City or PSG. Liverpool are an exciting team and I'm a big fan of Jurgen Klopp, but Liverpool in its current iteration will not challenge for the major trophies, they will come closer than Arsenal in their current form, but its a minor upgrade at best.

It's about as likely Liverpool will be in the top 4 next year as Arsenal. Both will probably miss the top 4 as many times as they make it the next 4 years, Sanchez clearly won't want that and thinks he's better than that. It's a sideways move for anyone having CL aspirations. Neither team can hold onto the best players or world class players. If Salah get's any better he will be off too. That's the sad reality with todays agents and wages. Arsenal and Liverpool can't match the ambitions of City United and Chelsea. So moving to an Arsenal Liverpool or Spurs is a sideways move fighting for that last spot. It's hardly nailed on that Liverpool will even get that spot this year. He could laughably move to Liverpool in January and lose 4th to Arsenal.

Regardless I think he's a bad player to get in your squad anyway.

I don't think any Liverpool fan expected him to join us (not that we're in for him anyway), I certainly didn't. I was simply pointing out that saying that moving from Arsenal to Liverpool was a sideways step was laughable.

My apologies, I thought people were arguing that it was a feasible move.

Agreed its not a complete sideways step, but its only an incremental upgrade as opposed to a big bang improvement like moving to City / Bayern / PSG / etc would be. But then again, there are not many clubs in the world that can be mentioned in the same breathe as those powerhouses at the moment.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made the move from Arsenal to Liverpool. Did anybody consider that it was an 'upgrade' for him? And if so, a warranted one? I wouldn't have thought so. Arsenal to Liverpool is at best a minor incremental jump up in my opinion (as a Spurs fan - so I'd love to demean that lot but I can't see it).

He obviously thought so. So much in fact that he took a lower financial offer to join Liverpool than stay at Arsenal.
