January Transfer Window 2017/18

Why now though (Coutinho)? Summer is hardly a long way away, seems slightly detrimental to replace him half way through (as a Utd fan however, I welcome this :D).

We need two for sure, not just to replace Coutinho but Can is off aswell in the summer. I get Keita is coming in but i think we are very short in cm. Id like an out and out striker myself, i expect Sturridge to leave and Ings and Solanke (not yet anyway) arent up to Liverpool standard.

Can & Sturridge likely leaving was part of the thinking. If you bring in another flexible attacker that can play across our front 3 then you're not just replacing Coutinho in our attack but part replacing Sturridge too and similarly, if you bring in a dedicated midfielder you can replace Can, with Keita coming to replace Coutinho's midfield role.

If and when this deal happens, we'll be getting a bucket load of money and the club have to look beyond just this window and to the summer too. I'm not fussed about signing another striker even with Sturridge likely to be off - we're at our best with a flexible front 3 and Firmino's always going to be first choice so any striker we sign is going to have to be happy as cover, which means you're not getting a top class one so I'd rather we just fill up our squad with more Salah's, Mane's and Firmino's. We've been softly linked with Mahrez and not too many people are overwhelmed by that but if we start next season with Coutinho, Sturridge & Can out but bring in Mahrez, Lemar & a decent holding midfielder (with Keita too obviously), I wouldn't be too unhappy.

Keita will be a massive upgrade on Can.
In terms of where he's likely to play, Keita will be closer to a replacement to Coutinho in midfield than Can. A lot of people are going to be surprised when Keita signs and he's not or at least doesn't play as our deepest midfielder.

It's neither of their natural positions but Can and Henderson our are only sitting midfielders, if and when Can goes we'll need to bring in somebody else in that role.

The only logical reason I can think of is Barca don't want this dragging on into the summer and World Cup - if Coutinho keeps playing as he has and lights up the World Cup too then there's a big possibility of PSG (which has already been mooted) or Real coming into the mix and they either miss out on him or it costs them even more.

Well, I for one am glad we have bought another young untested CB and shipped him out on loan. Things are looking up!

I just don't get it. People rave about Barkley but he's 24, constantly injured, even fit doesn't get in the Everton team - what is he going to do at Chelsea?? All the midefield players they have, he's barely going to get a start.

I don't see this amazing player that people bang on about - he's got very little pace, he's got a few tricks up his sleeve but other than that he's average at best.

£15 million as well - offically the worst/craziest transfer of the year and it's only 5 days in.....

Well, no. The day they sign him they pay £15m but he instantly becomes worth substantially more. Easily double.

I know what you mean but serious - how?? How is Barkley a £30 million player - he's unfit, doesn't actually have a proper position, has no pace to speak of.....

Ahhh - that's right - he's "young, english talent" - that's why......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I never got it either, I don't even see the talent part

He's backed himself and everton into a corner with his lack of fitness this year. No one wants him and he now has to join a club he didn't want because he thinks he's United or City quality and he isn't. He should just sign a deal at Everton prove himself and move on. I imagine Chelsea don't want him much either but figure to move him on after a year.

He backed Everton in a corner but himself? 12-18 months ago Barkley is only leaving Everton for £50m+ which no club was realistically going to bid for him as he'd never, consistently anyway, performed to the level he could/should. By running his contract down he forced Everton to be more realistic with their asking price last summer and his injury delaying things cost Everton another £15-20m too. Barkley's got his opportunity to move to a top side, going to get a big contract and even if Chelsea do move him on in 18 months time, he'll still end up at a club around Everton's level anyway. It's not just Chelsea that have been chasing him either - by all accounts Spurs were very much interested in him too.

On the questions about Barkley's ability and why Chelsea are after him. He's one of the most naturally talented players in the League - I remember a 17 year old Barkley and thinking even Moyes couldn't waste this talent. He's a player that clearly hasn't lived up to his potential, doesn't have a position or understand his game and how to make use of the talent he's got. Despite that, even if he only performs to the level he did at Everton, in this market he's still worth £15m but if Chelsea can get 50% of his ability out of him they'd have got a bargain.

Barkley confirmed.

Transfer market is mental when a player like Barkley goes for as much as £15m

5 and a half year deal, so they might get 3 games out of him

Strange move by him, much like Drinkwater where's he going to play? Mind you Bakoyoko is turd so perhaps he's going to take his place.

Well he's a different type of attacking mid which differs from Bakayoko, Kante, Fabregas and Drinkwater. He will have great players around him this time so can't really fail if he plays...thats a big if though.

I don't speak French but according to twitter L'Équipe are reporting that we've opened talks for Mahrez and that Monaco realise Lemar's value is at it's highest now and could be open to selling. Get them both in I say.

Be happy with both, even if we just got mahrez now and Lemar in summer. Mahrez would have helped last night in regards to creativity.

Looking at stats mahrez and countinho equal so far this season in league I think (goals and assists) however mahrez would have much better players in front of him compared to leister
