January Transfer Window 2017/18

Pretty quiet on the Man Utd front at the moment. I think we have to make at least one signing to lift the team, fans and club as a whole. That's not to say we should go out and sign someone for the sake of it, but there will be a number of players available who can significantly improve the squad (and likely starting 11). We can't afford to penny pinch at all, and have to go in aggressively and sign the players Mourinho wants.

Appears there could be some degree of truth to the Moura thing (though possibly not), a loan with an option to buy in the summer would be good. He doesn’t play much for PSG anyway.

He's good, yes, but could easily be frustrating. I haven't seen him play for quite a while. He's a short fast wide player who likes the cut inside. He's very inconsistent though which has been his problem, but his stats are OK.

For around £20m it's worth a gamble in the current market.

I've thought all along we should be in for Sanchez, certainly we might be able to offer a better financial package (than City are prepared to), and didn't Guardiola sideline him at Barcelona?

Not seen anything from any particularly credible sources yet but it would make sense. New #7.

Wouldn't miss Mkhitaryan either if he was part of the deal.

Ok this all stems from Di Marzio, who does have sources but isn't great by any means (I know Baz hates him :p).

Could easily be the agent trying to force City's hand.

The likes of Simon Stone etc should be in contact with the club and we'll see what they say later.

A couple of Guardian journalists and Balague have backed up the story too.

LOL man utd fans getting happy sanchez will be going no where near utd

Its a ploy to get city to stump up more cash for him believing utd are in for him, pretty standard agent tactics

I remember posts almost identical to this about RvP. :p

It is Arsenal after all, they are unpredictable and self destructive. I'm not convinced by any of the reports yet, hopefully there's something later...

Simon Stone and David Ornstein have written a BBC article which effectively says:

Arsenal will let Sanchez leave for the right price (£30m~)

City preferred destination

Man Utd were interested in September but current level of interest is unclear amid claims abroad that a bid has been made

Arsenal want Malcom to replace Sanchez if he goes

Reports coming out now that City won’t pay the £35m Arsenal want for Sanchez, as well as the big agent fee, and are prepared to walk away. Could easily be negotiating tactics but money talks, we need him more than City and might be prepared to push the boat out... Sanchez is desperate to leave Arsenal by any means necessary.

Mourinho press conference in an hour or so.

Mourinho on Sanchez:

When asked if Sanchez is a player United want this month, the Portuguese said: "I don't think it is ethical or correct to be speaking about players of other clubs.

"If somebody speaks about one of my players, to say we are interested or not I wouldn't be very happy.

"Sanchez is an Arsenal player. I don't know but probably this weekend he is going to wear Arsenal colours. I don't think it is correct to say things about Alexis Sanchez.

"At a general level, what I can say is that myself and the Manchester United board, we do not believe a lot in the January market. We don't believe in signing a player just to do something.

"What we believe is there are some players in the football world where, if you have a chance to sign them, whether it is in January, March or July, then you have to try.

"In relation to Sanchez all I can say, which everyone else says, is that he is a phenomenal player. I feel I shouldn't say much more than this."

This at least means he's interested, IMO.

City are saying they're prepared to miss out, as per the article here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42668562

As people have mentioned, due to his age and City's current attacking lineup, he'd get in the team for sure but players like Sane, Jesus and Sterling should all get better and not worse over the next few seasons.

Duncan Castles has written an article saying Man Utd are increasingly confident about getting Sanchez. Last night further comments from Mourinho's press conference were published, saying things like:

"The balance of the squad is made in the summer, unless you have a dramatic situation with a crazy number of injuries and you are pushed for emergency deals. But sometimes it can happen: on the table there's a fantastic opportunity and you fight for that opportunity.

"If it happens, it happens; if it doesn't happen, it doesn't. But I like my squad, I like my players; the more time I spend with them, the more I like them. And this week [in Dubai] was also good to be sure of that."

"So let's say in the summer we have three targets - a defender, a midfielder and an attacking player - if, in the winter, you do one of the three, then in the summer you are going to do three minus one.

"We like our squad, we believe in our squad - it's just about improving it in a balanced way. So if we do something now, it has to be something we really believe is the right thing to do for the team."

There's certainly something in this, whether it will transpire or not is another matter...

Sanchez hasn't travelled to Bournemouth today, and he is fit.

All the rags are linking the fact that Sanchez hasn't travelled with a move to Utd being imminent. £400k per week, £30m to Arsenal + heft signing on and agent fee for a player that's spent 18 months stood with his hands on his hips.

I'm still not sure at the moment, I think he prefers City but if they are flat out refusing to pay as much as us, we have a chance. I'm not worried about his potential commitment, his age means he'd have to give his all.

He can't be that bothered about club trophies anyway or he wouldn't have joined Arsenal in the first place :p

Yeah, although in terms of spending (which is the key factor) we are more likely than Arsenal to be buying 2-3 big players every season as required.

There seems to be a big gulf in the wages/fees being mentioned, will City decide to match it?

Simon Stone @sistoney67
Think this is one Man Utd won't believe is done until it is over the line. As recently as late last week, people inside club felt Sanchez to City was more or less certain. City felt player would prefer to join them. Interesting to see if Pep Guardiola makes a final push.

Yes it was Hazard I believe. I'm all for it, use the financial power to get the best players we can, it's not really easy in the current market with a lot of wealthy top clubs.

On the topic of Sanchez, I'm surprised Real Madrid haven't come in for him, especially given their current predicament.

Wenger has confirmed Sanchez's future will be decided in the next 48 hours (post match). The press in general think Man Utd is the most likely destination at the moment, but nothing is confirmed.

Tbf he won’t win many at Utd either :p. Especially with Mourinho’s penchant to play park the bus football:p

Didn't do too badly last season!

As an aside, this time last season everyone thought City were pretty poor and disappointing, and they turned it around since then. There's no reason we can't do the same (or other clubs who are prepared to spend big on the right players).
