January Transfer Window 2017/18

He's an olympic sprinter who can play a bit of football, would be interesting to see him in the PL.

A Chilean journalist close to Sanchez, who has said over the past week he's close to joining City, is changing his tune now, this might actually happen...

Yes, pretty much every journalist connected to United/City/Arsenal thinks we're in pole position. The more bitter ones are blaming money which, considering where City have come from, is rather comical to say the least.

The Chilean journalist I mentioned (who happens to be in Salford) has covered Sanchez quite closely and just tweeted out the following:

Maks Cárdenas @MaksCardenas
When Sánchez was a kid in Chile United was Top 3 club in the World. Any player of his generation would love to play in Old Trafford.

To put this in perspective, he appeared on a Man City podcast the other day saying a move to City wasn't far off.

Wenger himself said the move is imminent so I think we'll find something out tomorrow, or perhaps even at 10pm later when the papers etc start coming out.

I know he's just turned 29 but 2-3 good seasons out of him would be worthwhile, especially in our current position. Signing absolute top level players is never easy or straightforward.

All transfers will sound considerably more expensive when you add in wages and agent fees etc (which are often unclear).

It's very expensive, but it's really just what you'd expect a rich club to pay for a top player, even with his contract running down.

Will the wages really be that high? What's he on at Arsenal? City wouldn't offer much more than he's on now, so while we may offer more, we wouldn't have to go overboard.

It's more than affordable though so ultimately I don't really care, as long as it doesn't negatively affect us financially going forward (and it won't).

As for Sanchez not being that good, he's pretty damn good. Comfortably one of the best attackers around.

Let's not forget that while City have run away with the league and are playing very well, we had a better season than them last season and they actually won nothing. Things can change very quickly (in either direction).

He definitely was an excellent player but he's not played like one consistently enough in the past 18 months. How much that has to do with being a moody ****, I don't know.

I think both he and Ozil have wanted out for some time, they play well in bursts. Sanchez had a few good performances over the past couple of months, I remember that impressive snap shot against Crystal Palace not long ago.

I’m not saying it was a good season for us, but it was better than theirs, because theirs wasn’t good at all. I don’t think the roles will have reversed, but it’s not impossible, as you say.

City and Pep have actually won nothing yet, and people are talking as if they are an unstoppable force for years to come. Man Utd and Chelsea both have the capability to match and even surpass them (maybe Liverpool too).

I am pretty much always critical of the team and the manager, but let’s not get too carried away in the opposite direction either (though I appreciate that’s difficult for you).

If you don't pay a transfer fee for a player, you still have to pay large signing bonuses and agent fees.

Any elite level player (which Sanchez would be classed as) is difficult to sign at the best of times, when they are out of contract on the open market it will be even harder. We have to compete directly with not only Real Madrid and Barca but now City/Chelsea/Bayern/etc. With this in mind it's crucial to use anything you can to your advantage, be it money or otherwise. We may end up paying him too much money really, but he'd only be getting a bit less elsewhere in the grand scheme of things.

It's quite odd how people see us as some sort of monumental downgrade to rival teams. The reality is, current squad aside, we are anything but. We have a promising squad in need of improvement certainly, the history, the stadium, and are arguably the biggest brand club football has ever seen. I think most footballers would love to play for Mourinho despite how fans may perceive him at times (myself included). We are not some sort of low rent team despite some efforts to portray us as such.

I watched Andy Gray discussing it with George Boateng on BeinSports, it was quite interesting. Gray actually put forward a case for why he wouldn't just be joining Man Utd as a money grab, and Boateng didn't have much to say other than why wouldn't he go to City for a guaranteed Premier League medal...

As for developments on the Sanchez saga, nothing new seems to have happened so far today. BBC have an article up confirming things: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42687789

Oh, and I liked this:

:D

Having said all of that, nothing is finalised yet and there are reports City haven't given up.

Bouhafsi reporting that we've rejected a swap offer from Arsenal with Martial going the other way. I would have loved to see our response when they suggested that :D

Yep, absolutely no chance. Can't blame Arsenal for asking though.

Mkhitaryan I'm not fussed about, he can be excellent but only 10% of the time (if that). Not sure Wenger would improve an already fragile player.

I don't want Mkhi to go because I think he'll be fantastic for them. We'd be in a stronger position if Jose hadn't spent the last 2 months trying to destroy his value as well. I'm also uncertain where Sanchez fits into our team if we do sign him. Right Wing? Up front with Lukaku?

LW/RW/ST/CF, I think he can function anywhere really. Would be good to have both him and Martial in the team.

What's this, football manager? He'll either play behind Lukaku when you're playing West Brom at home and on the left when you're away to City, and of course he'll provide cover for Lukaku. With those two Utd should be able to sign up an official teapot partner.

Yes :p He can play on the right can't he?

Lingard's effective moments have come at random rather than his position IMO, if he's able to drift in from wide positions he'll be equally effective. That is assuming he can keep up his current form.

It's not odd, it's just reality. Utd just aren't top dog anymore. You still have all your history and glory days but people don't genuinely think of Utd as the best, maybe not even top two with recent form.

You had a great team and continuously spent big sums of money. Surprisingly that was a winning formula. Lol

Since then other teams have come in and spent as much or more and now they are doing better. It's like there is a strange link to outbidding the other teams for the best players.

Now you see it as a success for signing a 29 year old with the mood swings of a teenage girl.

So in answer to your question yes I think people do see Utd as a downgraded version of rivals.

It doesn't make them a bad side though, just you have to live with not being the best, or second best in the league anymore. 3rd to 6th tend to blend in with each other from year to year.

It wasn't a question, more of a statement, but no, it is odd. There is an unfair bias - which I expect from fans who have been left in our wake over the past 2 decades - and certain parts of the media to portray our situation as worse than it is. We aren't top dog right now on the pitch, but as a club we still pretty much are. You are free to disagree though. Man City are the one standout team in our league, they are not going to be impossible to catch (in future seasons) by any stretch of the imagination.

Mkhitaryan was meant to be in the squad today, so this fuels speculation about him going to Arsenal (Mourinho confirmed this as the reason).

This should hopefully lower the £35m fee we'd be paying Arsenal I imagine?

ive heard mika and 40mill for sanchez

laugh my head off if that's the case!!!

No chance, Mkhitaryan is worth an easy £20m. He could be good but he strikes me as a typical Arsenal player, fragile and not great most of the time. You need some commanding players.

Gary Neville is analysing the cost on MNF now, Sanchez over 3 and a half years will cost us £100m~ and City £73m~ (based on the rumoured deals).

Playing well for 10 games is no indication of anything, Arsenal regularly do that (for longer than 10 games too).

Mourinho speaking on Mkhitaryan: 'I would lie if I said it was a pure tactical decision.'

Could well be on the way to Arsenal then.
