January Transfer Window 2017/18

MEN are reporting City have officially withdrawn from the Sanchez race but Chelsea are making a late bid now... hopefully a wind up.

Others journalists reporting the same now too, but it appears City have told them that (based on what is being said), so it could well be dodgy information.

Alexis Sanchez: Man City end pursuit of Arsenal forward

Seems like this will be over the line if Chelsea don't cause any problems (doubt it really).

Man City pull out of race to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, based on current numbers demanded by #AFC + AS. #MCFC believe they were 1st choice but that Man U offering package higher than City would’ve paid in £60m deal last summer. TWIST City think Chelsea #CFC rivalling #MUFC

As I suspected, City have told the press they think Chelsea are interested.

Yeah but they've pretty much got the league won already.

City are playing the victim card here and it's comical, because they would never offer more money to sign someone, right? Maybe he's remembered he doesn't actually like Guardiola after all.

I'm struggling a bit with the Pep connection (and yes it does appear Sanchez wanted to play for him), they didn't really have a great time at Barcelona.

Laugh away. You’re not winning the league for a long time and you won’t win the champions league either. That leaves domestic cups, which he won at Arsenal.

We literally just won the Europa League. OK it's not as good as the Champions League, but it's better than the FA Cup. Let's see if Arsenal can win it this season if it's so easy.

Mourinho on Mkhitaryan as a makeweight in Sanchez deal: "Is it possible he's going to be involved in the deal? It's possible. It's also possible he stays."

Mourinho on Sanchez: “I am not going to speak about hypothetical situation. Probably there are other clubs interested, also some other clubs are trying. He’s an Arsenal player.”

Don't think anything will be confirmed tonight.

Interesting tweet from Salah's agent:

I wonder which transfer he could be referring to.

I don't think it's down to the agent, more the deal as a whole. City have lost out and are suddenly making out it's because they are thrifty and don't want ripping off. They have money to burn so that doesn't wash with me, their meteoric rise is purely down to aggressive spending. I do believe they have been shafted to a degree though as the deal was probably agreed back in the summer.

Yes, money is a critical factor without a doubt.

Balague is getting absolutely slaughtered on Twitter, you can tell he's fuming (worships Pep). :p

I can't believe people think City are going to run away with every competition for years to come. Not going to happen. Far better sides than them have failed to do it consistently.

As for the money, we are not Arsenal or other teams who need to thrift and penny pinch. Yes we overpay and at times lose out, but unlike other teams we can afford it.

It's not my money, if it means we have better players for the immediate future I am all for it. Enough has been spent over the years servicing various debts and other things, people shouldn't be bothered.

And it's not like you can just wait until the summer and get him on less wages and with no upfront fee, it doesn't work like that.

The longer this drags on the more I am concerned about Chelsea coming in, but I saw someone say Hazard is their top earner on £200k a week, is that true? I can't see them offering £300k+ to Sanchez in that case.

Not having to play for Mourinho must be a big plus, also London is great and Manchester isn't.

We could sign Neymar and Messi for £20m and you'd still put a downer on it.

Great isn't the word i'd use for London, i'd take Manchester over it every day of the week. As for Mourinho, it's not like Conte isn't known for falling out with players.

As I mentioned before, I also think despite any criticism he may get from fans/the media, players will still view him as a great manager to play for. He is still pretty much the most successful manager in the modern era.

Whether London is better or not (I'm no fan of it either), the wages would have to be very close for that to even be a factor.

Chelsea and Conte seem very volatile and I think their squad needs as much work as ours, if not more.

To be fair, we have a number of young players but to arrest the decline we need players in their prime. Sanchez has wanted out of Arsenal since they were battered at Bayern Munich and you can't blame him. Arsenal are a club going backwards and the players and manager are weak - their own fans say as much.

I suppose it depends how highly you rate Sanchez, playing at his best he's one of the best players in the world, and that's hopefully what we will get out of him, if we sign him at all. Mourinho is never realistically going to sign a couple of youngsters in his place, so we'll take what we can get - and that would come with risks like any transfer.

The same way £100m+ transfers are going to be the norm, £350k+ wages will be soon too. This clearly has a bigger effect though as clubs will end up spending a fortune when it comes to renewals etc. As for Balague saying he'll be the 4th highest paid player in the world, there will be players in China earning more I think? Balague is fuming, which is rather funny.

As for Griezmann, we would have signed him but due to the transfer ban he opted to stay at Atletico at least until the summer. That's what I understood anyway.

Sanchez at his best was one of the best players in the PL, he's never been close to being one of the best players in the world. My comment on wages wasn't based on anything Balague's said but you're right, there possibly are players in China on more but I think it's fair to discount them. Only the 3 very best players in the world will be earning more than him and nobody could seriously suggest he's even close to their level - I doubt anybody could strongly argue that he's close to being in the top 10 players in the world. And you're right, wages will keep growing and the reason why is because of deals like this. As I said, whenever Pogba is offered a new deal (and it might be sooner rather than later as a result of this) he/his agent will point to Sanchez's deal and say that if he's getting x then I want y. But that's not Mourinho's problem, he'll be gone in a couple of seasons.

You mention your young players needing a senior player to help them and how Arsenal's players are weak etc. You don't spot a problem there? Sanchez is part of the problem at Arsenal - he's not been the senior player that's dragged the team through and helped the young players, he's downed tools and acted like a ****. And your young players (I still can't believe Lingard is actually 25) have out performed Sanchez.

On form I'd have him in and around the top 10-15 in the world (sorry, I should add in a strictly attacking sense), but I suppose that's all opinion. You see him as Mourinho adding yet another good player, I see Mourinho wanting him as the standout attacking player, the star of the team. This will, as ever, depend on how well he performs.

In an ideal world I'd much rather sign a player at his level who is 24/25/26, but really that is far from straightforward (and there aren't that many). A player in that mould would cost £100-150m in the current market and still want 2-300k a week.

Sanchez has carried Arsenal at times, he's often the only player who looks to be a threat, but he's not Messi and can't literally win games on his own when the rest of the team are rubbish - not many players can.

Fair points, I suppose we'll see what happens. There are murmurs now that Mkhitaryan has an agreement with Arsenal and things are moving along, but nothing concrete at the moment.

is he any good? Mkhitaryan ?

Potentially, yes, but he's been massively inconsistent and goes missing more often than not. If Wenger can get him playing at his best he could be very good.

From The Times:
Exclusive: Mino Raiola, Mkhitaryan's agent, tells @thetimes: “Manchester United is not going to sign Sánchez unless Mkhi agrees to join Arsenal."

He adds: “Sánchez is part of the Mkhi deal, not the other way around."
