Take your pick from those positions, because he can play in any of them and he's a lot better than any of them.

Quaresma and Villa both on the market it seems, with other rumours of David Silva and Joaquin on the way out of Valencia too, certainly some options to consider in January.

I wouldn't mind any of those 4 mentioned players tbh, my prediction of Torres+Villa up front has started to look more likely

Would love Villa but we can't afford him. Even if we could I'm sure the Americans wouldn't be too happy about spending any more money than they had to. If he goes any where it'll be Chelsea.

Quaresma and Joaquin are both fantastic talents but both are far too inconsistent and I haven't seen a lot of Silva.

Silva's the one we've been linked with the most and imo is a great prospect, he can play on either wing or off the striker and has said he'd like to play for us. I can't see us signing him in January though, i don't think there will be any £7-8m+ transfers from us during January unless the likes of Carson, Crouch and Riise all go during January.

If the owners give Benitez any money (surely if any is given it will be to secure Mascherano)

Why? He's not better than Gerrard or Alonso. Put those 2 in the middle and secure some high quality wingers would be a better option?
No point spending a reported £17m on a 3rd choice CM who isn't in the same class as the 2 I mentioned, they'd be better off spending around £6-£7m on a 3rd choice defensive midfielder and spending big money on wingers.

Alonso and Gerrard are better deployed further upfield imo - Mascherano is more of a DM and there are very few similar players of his calibre in the league let alone in Liverpool

^ Agree. We (Liverpool) need to keep hold of quality players like him. He's put in some fantastic performances this season and will only get better with age.

Do you think you will get £17m or so to sign him in Jan, or will it have to wait until the summer? Thats going to be your only major signing if it happens in the next 4 weeks or so ( but Crouch could go allowing for another decent prospect of course)

Nope. I think we will be forced to sell if we want buy anyone in January.

Of the players we could sell only Sissoko wouldn't be missed that much. We've got plenty of cover in the middle but I doubt he would go for more than 5 million at the moment. We could sell Riise and Crouch but that would leave us short at left back and up front.

But in doing so you either play 3 at the back, lose your wide players or play one up front.

Man Utd and Arsenal have won numerous Premierships all by playing 4-4-2.

I think you are forgetting Momo "Vieira Mk. II" Sissoko, probably the best DMC in the world.

The scouse fans that I work with couldnt give a hoot if Sissoko left, and even if it isnt much, it would raise funds for a different player

I never said Liverpool had to play BOTH Gerrard and Alonso together, more that Alonso is a replacement for Gerrard, or in a different type of game.

Mascherano is easily worth keeping for Liverpool (you dont have to play all your midfielders in every game - doesnt mean they arent worth keeping though)

Liverpool pretty much do have to play them together though as they're easily Liverpools best 2 players in Midfield.
Mascherano is overpriced at anything over £7/£8m, so they'd be better saving their money and strengthening the wings first.

Silva is a fantastic talent, I don't think he'll be coming to anyone cheap though.

He's definitely a great talent to have now, and a very bright star for the future too.

Carrick was bought in an inflated market cross-Premiership and did very well last season. Hargreaves is phenomenal and in a different class to Mascherano.

I personally don't think there's much between them other than age and experience. I certainly wouldn't say one is in a different class to the other. They're both excellent players.
