Joe Lycett - Qatar/Beckham debate

Hahaha is this some kind of 'revenge' for the criticism they've been getting recently? Guess it's quite odd that beer was ever going to be allowed in the first place really.

Or maybe it's a PR thing to try and deflect attention, trying to look more 'authentic' to get more sympathy? After all a bit hard to justify being hard-line on gays apparently due to culture / religion when there's a massive stadium selling forbidden beverages just round the corner...

Whole thing is just such a mess.

The beer giant, which reportedly pays $US75m ($A112m) each four years to be the tournament’s official alcohol sponsor, was seen moving its tents last week.
“AB InBev was informed on November 12 and are working with FIFA to relocate the concession outlets to locations as directed. We are working with FIFA to bring the best possible experience to the fans,” the company said.

“Our focus is on delivering the best possible consumer experience under the new circumstances.”

They are very unlikely to have got the WC if they said from the outset that you wouldn't be allowed to drink alcohol. The WC is a money making vehicle. They are insanely strict about it. I think it was the last WC various players got in trouble for using the wrong brands that were not sponsors.

They are hard line on loads of stuff. They are just particularly anti-LGBT. And alcohol isn't banned there, its just not to be consumed in public areas.

Worst world cup ever continues to live up to expectations

Watch the Netflix documentary about FIFA. I knew about the corruption but it went all the way back to the 1978 world cup. The whole organization is basically like a drug cartel/mafia.

There was a point where it even linked Qatar to "bribing" the French president Sarkozy who then met with Platini who was the boss of Uefa. Obviously there is nothing direct and Platini's words are Platini's words but basically it went Qatar invested heavily in the French economy and PSG, Sarkozy met with Platini and indirectly "wink, wink" asked him to vote for Qatar to host the world cup to keep country relations good.

It's also a bit pathetic if they're saying "no alcohol inside the stadiums" but allow it to be sold literally outside or in pubs nearby.

The idea of stadiums full(?) of fans getting traditionally beered up and spilling out into the night celebrating was always completely at odds with having the event in Qatar.

What an absolute shambles.

Yeah having seen that they're still allowing it elsewhere like in the 'fan zones' etc I don't really see the point at all.

Must be some kind of demonstration of power or deflection of criticism... Very odd.
