As I said, Terry should be suspended on full pay, club and country. (Before anyone says anything the Suarez charge was different)

If Terry isn't going, Rio isn't guaranteed to start every game for England let alone be fit enough for the tournament. Hart might not be such a bad choice. Can't say many of the current England team jump out as good candidates.

That's true and even now the idea of Hart as captain doesn't sit well with me but if a long term captain is named now what other options are there?

Is there a need to pick a long term captain now? We're going to have a new manager after the competition, he may want a different person as captain.

If fit, Gerrard will start at the Euros and is the only obvious captain other than Terry. Gerrard should be captain for the Euros and then let the next manager decide who he wants.

I'd have to side with the few who have already mentioned Terry's lack of credibility for playing in the first XI on current ability/form alone. Chelsea fans may disagree but I've always had issues with the praise the guy has got over the years despite him being (at least what seemed to me) a centre back who needed help, a little bit too much, from his partner at the back.

As for the decision to strip him of the armband, I find it odd. Even as someone who doesn't rate the man as a player, nor as a human being, he hasn't been proven guilty from everything said so far. Unless the England squad themselves (senior players for example) make it known they want him removed, I really don't understand why it's necessary.

That said, why he was given it back in the first place is still completely over my head.

As for who would replace him, I'm a little bit unsure. Gerrard and Rooney I imagine will be the front-runners but as people have already mentioned, both are pretty weak role-model figures too (at least off the pitch.)

As for the long-term effect, I can't imagine it will concern anyone beyond John Terry and his England career. England's performance in the Euro's won't change one bit, in my view.

Welcome to the forum Old@Heart.

Who do you support?

Very kind of you.

I'm from Belfast. So usually it's Rangers/Celtic around these parts. As it turns out though, my dad bullied me into supporting Manchester United from a young age. Which is my excuse for anyone who accuses me jumping on the wagon, because they sure as hell didn't win anything major when he was a boy!

If I had one guess who you'd support... :p

well said.

Rooney and Gerrard would be perfect though, whatever they do off the pitch they are still leaders on the pitch, yes they have made mistakes like Terry yet it never affects anything on the pitch, if anything it fires them up.

someone will now come in and say that they are terrible role models but whoever said that the captain has to be a role model to kids? First and foremost they need to be able to lead a football team. Terry's misdemenours have had disatourous affects on the pitch, dipping his teammates bird and racially abusing an opposing player whilst on the pitch are worse than fighting and dipping Grannies.

What affects have Terry's misdemenours had on the pitch? I can't think of any noticable downturn in his or the teams performance on the back of his off-field problems.

I'd say Rooney needlessly kicking out at opposition players had a far greater affect.

Now he is playing again what about Paul Scholes? Oh no he turned his back on his country.

Scott Parker, Gareth Barry?

Paul Scholes would be perfect as long as he has someone to do the running for him, I watched him against Stoke and he was immense.

Hart is really the only shout.

I think giving it to the likes of Jones is pre-empting things too much. I haven't seen anything of him to state that he'll be England choice for years to come.

That exact same comment could be levelled at JT. He's a better leader than those two and he is being judged solely on off-field misdeameanours.

the ponit your missing is 'off field problems'

you don't think it's counter productive to **** your best mates girlfriend?

you don't think it's poor form to call your England teammates brother a black ****? that one actually happened 'on the pitch'

I see you left out Gerrard punching people in night clubs, do you support liverpool by any chance :p

Rooney needlessly kicking an opponant didn't do any harm either, in fact it's rare to see someone showing passion if they are wearing three lions.
