Jordan Peterson thread

Does seem to have gone off the deep end - shame as I do think his ‘10 Rules for Life’ book is pretty good!

Must be something about social media that just makes people go off on one. Musk, Rowling (not horrendous but needlessly turbo), Laurence Fox (remember him?)

Put away the keyboards / phones!

I used to like him, then you realise while he does know stuff about psychology... it's what he trained in after all... you simply can't apply that knowledge to other areas like climate change.

The irony is that by trying to apply his intelligence to areas outside his expertise he has made himself even more unbelieveable in areas where he is knowledgeable.

He has some good points to make about the current state of society, and I respect him for standing up to the alphabet people and the pronoun police. Beyond that, he's little more than a walking joke.

Do you reckon he's another of those darned psychopaths? ;)

No he isn't. He clearly has mental health issues, there is no shame in that, so many in society do but you don't hold them up as fountains of knowledge and encourage them in their delusions. That isn't healthy. I hope those that love him help him get the help he obviously needs.

Lawrence Fox was fine for about 10 minutes and then he got a little traction and went absolutely mad. I think social media is driven heavily by engagement and the best posts for engagement are divisive. Sometimes people just go nuts once they get attention and their real views come out and sometimes I think they just go a bit nuts.

The problem with all these people is that anyone with half a braincell can understand that someone can have some rational and valid opinions and also some that you think are complete rubbish. Peterson is one of these. Some of what he says is absolutely bang on and other stuff is complete rubbish. As soon as you say his name though people go mad.

People either have to be on the naughty or the nice list. There is no room for nuance or context.

He really should stick to what he's good at, but I guess the money has dried up there. There was a strong correlation with him going off the deep end once his daughter got involved in the production of much of his media.

He's discussed the pitfalls of social media many times, but he still falls into them.

I think he forgot that the internet is a viciously Darwinist place that once you've 'fallen off' it's practically impossible to return to any sort of relevance and having experienced the highs he's not happy experiencing anything else. I would also presume that he's forsaken every other avenue of revenue so probably some level of financial angst if he's not been smart with it (considering his academic job it's a fair bet that financial knowledge is low).

The issues with social media are massively well known and documented but the vast majority of people still spend hours on it a day. Its an addiction and yet we don't treat it as such. We glorify all the supposedly "positive" aspects of it and bemoan the negative when they are the two sides of the same coin. I don't see that much difference between the sycophantic adoration and the nasty trolling really. Both aren't real. Both are people projecting their own issues onto someone else.

We act like people following celebrities or influencers for the simple reason they are attractive is a good thing or healthy. We only seem to suggest that social media is negative when people feel bad about themselves through comparison or because they are being trolled. The whole thing is ******* toxic. Its attention seeking at its most pure and I know very few people who are attention seekers who are actually happy.

Yup
IIRC he's basically burning his bridges with his only professional qualifications as he was refusing to do the standard mandatory ongoing training*, and pretty much told the professional regulatory body to get lost when they raised issues with his unprofessional and very public conduct. From what I remember (i've not really paid much attention to him), the professional body are looking at removing his accreditation which would mean he would no longer be able to see patients, and may not even be able to use his professional title which I'd assume would mean he would no longer be able to work as a teacher of psychology or whatever (I'm guessing even a professor needs to still be in "good standing" with the regulating authority for their profession if they're teaching).
So it's looking like he's no longer got any career seeing patients, so it's all writing books, speaking engagements and online click bait.

*The sort of stuff every medical professional has to do (along with every lawyer, engineer etc etc with their own versions).

I guess the main difference would be that it's part of his actual job and he's a multi-millionaire

Being terminally online and spewing streams of consciousness onto Twitter is not part of his job.

Yes he's a multi-millionaire, but it's come at a terrible cost to his health. He's a drug addict who's suffered a slow-motion mental collapse over the past 12 months, and instead of dealing with it properly as a mature adult would, he's just been purging his thoughts and feelings all over the internet because he's addicted to the attention he gets from his fans.

The last few months have been little more than a torrent of brain farts and regressive behaviour, as he destroys his own legacy faster than any of his real or imaginary foes could have done.

He's actually employed by The Dailywire, which is a Conservative news outlet, so part of his actual job would be maintaining an online presence.

He was perfectly fine and spoke very well on the last podcast that I saw him on which was last month, absolutely nothing wrong with him. I think you're reading into his Tweets a little too much.

I'm 100% no one posting negative things about him in this thread actually listened to it, easier to get your information second hand or basing everything on someone's Tweets.
