Junior doctor strike: Union's pay demands unrealistic, says Steve Barclay

Short memories some people have on this forum.

Don't attack people for knowing their worth while ignoring the billions squandered in dodgy contracts or random PM musical chairs.

Next pandemic don't expect people to face death every day whilst others kickback on furlough.
I totally see your point and don't even disagree with you. I am not having a go at the doctor's striking ........ but lots of us had it tough through covid. I was expected to work my job at the same time my wife who was part time had to move to full time with little choice to set up a covid surveillance sequencing lab whilst at the same time we had a 4 year old with no one to look after him. I was doing child care till 6pm then starting my job at 6:30 and working to the early hrs whilst both my neighbours were sitting in the garden during the day with giant paddling pools and buckets of beer enjoying furlough.

not expecting sympathy. I had a job and still have one.... but just saying it's not only doctors and nurses who had it tough.

Older Drs showing newer Drs they need to fight for what they are worth.

The British public do not deserve health care for what they have voted in and done to the NHS. Let them die.

Does anyone not have anything else to say about this? This in my opinion is absolutely criminal. 20 years later and with all a £1.98 increase? Is this really how it is in the NHS? How is this is even allowed?

Because people do not strike and take anything that is throw at them in this country. Yes, sir, no sir, three bags full sir. The 99% (majority)British are subordinate.

The government should not have a say in salaries. The NHS should present a bill to the government every year. Apart from that, they should be left to meet their mandate in whatever way they see fit. Whenever the government get involved in anything it turns in to a complete mess.

Correct, we are a failed state and a rotten people. The death throes of an empire king gone, thinking we were still powerful and now waking up to the idea we need to bend the knee to more progressive powers such as the EU, but failing to and this is the result.

But I’m enjoying it, my life has worked out very well, and I very much like watching the British public get what they voted for and deserve.

It should basically be on the front page of every newspaper, it's a disgrace.

The British public wanted it, and now the world is that much smaller, they are reaping what they have sowed.
Repatriation to any country should not be paid by the state. it should be paid by the owners of East India Company etc.. , which is now owned by the Indians.

Expected to get worse.

not all of us voted for this.... I don't even think we ever had to bend the knee to the EU as you say. we had one of the best seats at the table with an agreement most other members would love to have had.

Looks like a fair chunk was for "on call"?
Where's that gone 20 years later?

All these countries generally pay higher for most jobs anyway?

"How do salaries compare with the UK? According to the Office for National Statistics, the average UK salary is £26,266, while the latest data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average annual wage in the United States is $53,490 per year (about £38,941)"

In all fairness you can’t very easily compare the 2 payslips based on that as the one from 2000 was the old contracts before the ‘new deal’ of 2002.
However the job of being a junior doctor hasn’t somehow become cushier in the last 20 years, and the intensity has generally gone through the roof.

ignore the on call part and accept that 2 similar roles based on similar experience has seen no increase in 22 years

@hurfdurf - I already asked but didn't get a response so I'll try again and tag on subsequent relevant posts

McDonald’s staff are taking home similar monthly wages.

A person 2 years into working at McDonalds is on £16.30/hour?

I don't want to be that guy (and I appreciate it's not Speakers Corner) but - citation please.

You are stuck 20 to 40 years ago with no clue on the current realities of the economy. Please just admit you were wrong.

I could ask you to do the same....

I know someone who says something but can’t back it up with facts.

So do I.... Will you back up your post with facts about McDonalds workers on circa £16/hour after 2 years in the job? (Hint, that's almost £34k/year for a 40 hour week)

I'm more than happy to be proved wrong.
