Just dropped a deposit on some M Power - Trackday Project Car

okay start with a teaser of a 450bhp scooby doing 1:19 :D

no that isnt the one ! ill look for link might post it later.

That's not a road car......

In short you were telling a porky pie were you not? Otherwise why not post up the video of this Impreza you said you easily found? ;)

So still slower than an M3 which can be used on the road with 360BHP, just post the video you told us all is easy to find on youtube that you keep telling us about DG. :)

P.S. I'd like to see him try and cut the chicane on the back straight now on the new layout, talk about straight lining the track and going beyond track limits. :D

Just dropped some rubber stops off for the boot at the bodyshop. Boot is pretty much lined up now, bit of tweaking to do and then to be painted.

Guys

Safety question, first check this out:-
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...ng-e46-m3-track-car/2096725?isexperiment=true

In that advert they have fitted a reat strut brace and mounted the harnesses to it. See the advert images.

That strikes me like it might not be safe simply as a strut brace might not be strong enough but its just mounted with bolts to the top mounts I imagine, not welding. Anyones thoughts on that is it OK or a bad idea?

Seems quite expensive considering you have only spent in the region of 8-9k?

I guess they are hopeful, to summarise I've spent:-

Initial car cost: £6900
Money back from selling parts of it: £1000

So car cost £5900

New parts added:-

KW Clubsport coilovers: £1000
PF Rear Discs: £200
Apex wheels: £800
M3 CSL Exhaust: £350
Z4M Lollipops: £100
Evolve R Remap: £400
BMC Panel Filter: £40
Milltek 100 cel cats: £275
Rear LED Lights (Not fitted): £220
Rear Lightweight boot fitted & Painted: £400
Front CSL clone bumper and front end painted: £700
CSL pollen housing: £80
JPR Seat mounting bracket: £80

TOTAL: £4645 + £5900 car cost (£10545) - Bear in mind I have added a few items which were not required for this cars task, but hey its my project. :)

Service items:-
4x new cups: £800
PF08 Front pads: £180
Inspection 2 service, valves and all vanos bolts/hub replaced for prevenitive maintenance: £550
Allignments: £300

So probably around £2000 in maintenance but that will see me through all of this year as well. :)

Bear in mind the car for sale has Nitrons, I'd rate those over KW's and its already got the front AP's installed, but in fairness its missing a few things my car has.

If I sold mine tomorrow, I'd advertise it at £11,950 as its pretty well sorted now, but if I caged it, brakes done and spot on well based on that advert I'd just stick it up at £14,950 as it does seems there are a few people out there who just want to buy an M3 that is already done and can't stretch to the 30-40k that CSL's are costing now.....

But I would say that car to sell should be 13k. :)

Tbf you do make hard work of the chicane, cut the kerb ;)
tb1236421.jpg

If I cut it like that Impreza I'll be hitting those sausages hard, imagine they'd do a bit of damage, but agreed I could take more curb, just not that much. :)

But yes I could take more kerb pretty much all the corners. :)

Well the time can't be compared anyway since the track layout has changed, it was clutching at straws posting a video like that. Didn't seem like he was going that hard anyway, I did only watch 1 lap though and got bored.

I've never bothered with timing though, pointless endeavour imo. Unless you are going against someone else in the same car then it's hardly a fair comparison of skill.

Just signed on at Gibbo's request and known as Blade on the MLR Evo forum.

Some facts:-

1. I had an EVO 6 RSX between 2000 and 2004 and developed it. It had a basic bolt-in cage, seats, harnesses, lexan windows, Ohlins suspension, trick diffs, Mountune engine with HKS turbo producing somewhere around 550/550. Circa 1150kgs. A fortune went into the car mostly through wrong development! Best it ever went at Donington was 1m15 in the hands of Andrew Kirkcaldy, a well-known professional, and on full slicks. Things have moved on a lot both in tyres, transmission and suspension. I would not be surprised if today you could make the same car go round in 1m12 with a better cage, current suspension and a paddle shift dog box. The car was very difficult to drive due to the on/off boost nature, again this would be different today as turbo technology has moved on and a stroked engine would make a huge difference.
2. I had an M3 CSL as my road car which I made some changes to initially – a cage, Recaros, supersprint race exhaust and not much else. I did tonnes of trackdays in it with the intent of racing the EVO, but that blew up at Snetterton during testing for Britcar. We literally slapped slicks and Intrax 4-ways on the CSL and went racing, and it was astonishing. The 1:03 around Silverstone National was in its first race, beating properly developed race cars. Prior to that, on Cup tyres, the best I saw was 1m20 with the standard setup on road tyres. Put rears on the front and I saw 1m18, but really comparing times at Donington is silly as the track is different now to back in the early 2000s in terms of surface, and lap time there does seem to vary a lot depending on weather, how much aviation fuel has been dumped etc. A trackday is also not a race and hard to get clear laps, so again pointless comparing to time attack etc.
3. Racing the CSL in mostly stock form it was doing 1m18s on slicks in an endurance race which is not flat-out sprinting. Most likely had a 1m16 in it setup to sprint, low fuel, softer tyres etc.
4. The best my car achieved was 1m12 in 2006, but they this point it was in full GTR spec with carbon body work weighing 1200kgs and sporting a Drenth sequential shifter, trick diffs etc etc. That’s a £100k of car. Engine was stock. Same car achieved 2m36 at SPA in 2007. Current cars will be low 1m10s or less as many of them are now producing over 400bhp quite easily and reliably.
5. I have seen some very fast EVOs and Subarus but the big issue with these is the added weight from the 4wd system and the management of heat, not to mention the inherent understeer. They definitely do not manage their tyres better over distance, but setup for sprint, an EVO definitely can be competitive. Look at Simon Norris’ Evo, also built by Simpsons (the shell)

Frankly, your car is a good package, will be low cost to run and should be capable of 1m18. There is little difference between it and a CSL. Apart from the airbox, the engine differences were incredibly slight (ramp angles on the cams making little difference in reality ).

I’ve got an E92 M3 GTS (the special edition orange M3), Ferrari Scuderia 430 16M, Nissan GTR MY11 with 630bhp/600lbft and the FN2 Type R road legal touring car in development circa 300bhp and 1100kgs.

They are all different! The GTR is incredible for example around a circuit like Silverstone.

Point to note is I am not a pro driver. I got pretty good in the end, but a pro will find seconds. Generally I got to be within 1 to 2 seconds of Ed Moore, who is my friend and a real pro. Taking posts over a 7 or 8 year period off the internet will get quite different views and may be subject to typos.

The above is about as good as my memory will let it be. I’d also just ignore haters and enjoy your car. As long as you enjoy it, lap times are irrelevant on a track day. You just do not go as fast compared to the red mist of a clear qualifying lap when racing!

Tony

Thanks for taking the time and effort to post here. :)

That's one very impressive collection of cars.
Think I speak for all when I say post up a thread with some pics of them if you get time.

Ed Moore is a very good driver, and a decent bloke too :). Fair play to anyone that can get times anywhere near his!

No comment on Norris though.

Don't seem to be able to upload pics.

You need to upload them to somewhere like photobucket and then get the url and put it between image tags, for example:-

P.S. As your into the track action, why no 911 or Cayman or are you not a Porsche fan?

Hay Blade, Welcome to OcUK Motors! :D
I saw your car pictures on the GTR forum the other day, quite the collection you have!
I don't post there much and I sold my GTR last week but keep checking in to see how peoples projects are progressing.
The US site is a bit more interesting though especially with the big power GTR vs TT Lambo drama :)

Oh Gibbo, im hoping to try get to donnington for the 16th of april if your planning on going on any trackdays in april, let me know if your free

Which organiser you going with so I can book it. :)
if it's raining I will take 911, if dry M3. :)

ah I just realised thats a bike one, it would be the wednesday the 23rd of april. I dont mind who its booked with, first one of the google list was javelin.

What i would say is dont book it yet until it at least ive had the car mapped.

Im expecting the car back on the 22nd of March, once its back my list currently is this.

As i still need to do these things

Modify my wing uprights 24/03
Take it for MOT 29/03
Take it to be mapped 01/04 - 02/04
Fit lourves in the front clam and finish my side skirts 03/04 - 04/04
fit AP 2 pots on the back with 304mm discs all around 05/04
Fit my roll centre adjusters 05/04
Fit race springs 05/04
Buy tyres 12/04

So in theory ive got 10days extra ontop to allow for delays but you know that the best laid plans of mice and men etc
