Just dropped a deposit on some M Power - Trackday Project Car

Eliminating brake fade is not all about pads and fluid, it's about dissipating the heat generated by the friction more efficiently to avoid excessive heat build up and retention in the braking components. This in turn stops the fluid boiling and pads getting too hot. There's lots of factors that go into that one.

They WILL fade if they're being used properly, I know that, been there, unless you're on a circuit that's very kind on brakes or only doing 4 to 6 lap stints.

You go to loads of trackday's and have owned a CSL. You will therefore know there is a very good reason that every CSL or E46 M3 that are tracked regularly will be running BBK's :)

Yes and on my older 525i which I tracked only had yellow stuff pads and fluid, drove for most of the day absolute hammering the car to the point things were glowing, never once did it experience fade.

Shall see how I get along, if I get fade, of course I will go BBK, but I suspect I shall have no fading issues what so ever. What I might find is that I'd like to brake a little later but can't because I need a BBK. Shall see how things turn out next weekend. :)

Wow there is some real lack of talent from other drivers in those videos! I'm surprised there are no incidents.

That BMW is terrible, clearly attempting a power slide for some reason, with complete lack of control. Glad I didn't go when you see driving standards that low.

My Supra control was paramount.

No little chefsaround you see.

To be fair, you did get black flagged.

haha

Just taken all this out:-

Door cards off too, shall do airbags and rear speakers later/tomorrow. :)

Time to get that stero / harmon kardon speakers on the bay. :D

Gibbo - I'd be very interested to know how you get on with the CSL SMG re-flash. From what I understood, the CSL uses a different SMG ECU (different part number). Although I'm guessing that it could just be different BMW part number indicating the different S/W revision.

Are you going to reflash the DSC software to get M-Track mode? Could be useful on wet track days as a safety net.

Yes shall be doing both. :)

Door trims are off now. All airbags removed barr two. Glovebox gone. :D

Just had door cards price up for some lightweight ones and door pulls, much cheaper than expected. :)

IIRC you can only enable M-Track on >October 2002 cars. How old is yours?

I imagine you could get a fair amount of money for the sat nav stuff too :)

I'm jealous of the project tbh looks great fun.

Im not a big fan of the E46 but there is something i really like about that car.

Not tempted to make the wheels turn silver?

Nope, preferre them black. :)

Applied some Autoglym super resin, then it rained, still some pictures:-

Surprised how clean and unmarked it is really for a track car. Shame the sun went in and the paint has a lovely light blue metallic flake in it which really pops in the sun. I think its Topaz blue.

Also driven it very aggressivlely now in the dry with the DSC off and what a machine, immensely progressive and absolutely tons of grip from the rear-end, surprising considering so much weight is out the rear and its not corner weighted. Also driven it in the wet, my god are these things easy to drift it just does it so progressively with so much ease, not had any silly angles as its on the road, but seems very well setup.

Looking forward to getting the CSL SMG firmware on it soon, for the fast more aggressive shifts. :D

Found in the service history that in March 2013 it had its allignment done, settings are:-
Front camber = -1.75
front toe = neutral
Rear camber = -1.50
Rear toe = 28 minutes toe in across the axle.

See how goes on track, if I need more camber turnersport top mounts go upto -4 and can get new rear lower arms to get more negative rear camber upto around -3 :)

Really really happy with it and the uprated exhaust seems very very small, guessing its a lightweight one of some sorts. Jobs to do after track day which won't cost too much:-

1. Door cards and pulls for front doors, remove all sound proofing.
2. Get the tar removed from floor, a few hours, but no doubt another 20kg there as that stuff is surprisingly heavy.
3. Get all front carpets/tar removed and metal kick plates fitted.
4. Compression test just to be on safe side, depending on result change out head gasket as a preventive measure, if full compression then no need. :)
5. Change plugs whilst above being done.
6. Oil/Filter change.
7. Coilovers and corner weighting.
8. Powerflex bushes for subframe.
9. MK60 module fitted so I can have track mode DSC, though DSC off seems safe enough, but they cost little and I can programme it myself.

Hopefully weight will be around 1300kg at this point and 340-350BHP. Can then looks at a CSL boot and CSL front bumper to say another 25kg or so along with 100 cel cats, CSL airbox if can get along with a remap towards 360-370BHP and sub on or below 1300kg.

They are such a superb car, I miss the ones I had. The engine is pretty much bullet proof, bar perhaps Vanos issues, which still effect the odd one, my first one for example. They are a great car and perfect for this sort of thing.

I'd like to get it on a dyno to confirm what it's running, but do you know how to dyno the SMG ones mate, I've heard to get them to dyno you need some special start up sequence or fuse pulled due to SMG?

Hopefully vanos be fine, HGF more likely as the gaskets wear with age, but caught early it's just a gasket replacement job so not too much money.

What are signs are a vanos going if there is any warning?
