"Just stop oil"

I can only speak for myself but I've done everything I realistically can. Ditched the diesel car for a petrol (can't afford EV yet), insulated my loft, cut energy use, recycle everything possible. Live a pretty minimalist life, so not sure what JSO expect me to do as an individual.

I don't blame people for getting angry when they're being blocked from getting somewhere. I just don't see what they think they're achieving other than peeing people off.

I can understand why they protest in the way they do, it's just a huge pain in the rear for those inconvenienced by them.

Personally, I agree with their message, but I don't agree with their solution. You will never change the minds of people by annoying them. I don't think the people's minds can be changed by protestors, so I think we will most likely all die. I accept that. These protestors don't.

Consider that you are certain that oil is destroying the world for your children. You worry about it every day, because time is running out. Governments are not acting fast enough, the damage to our climate is accelerating, and every year there is more and more bad news. You feel very strongly about this, but believe the public are blind to the scale of the problem. They need waking up! What do you do? It's hardly surprising that some people take drastic action. They probably know, deep down, that they are taking the wrong approach, but they don't know what else to do.

I think there is only so much an individual can do. The rest is down to the government. So, God help us all because we all know how useless they are! But in fairness to the government, I don't think the people are ready to make any real change yet. What we are doing right now is making changes that keep our standard and way of life the same, but that's probably not enough.

Nearly every household has a gas boiler for heating and hot water. You could probably change that in 60 to 100 years. Most households are going to be reliant on fossil fuel transportation for at least the next quarter century. Most industry and office premises are heated by gas and industries requiring per for processes use gas or power from fossil fuels to some extent. I have not seen much in the way if electric construction plant except maybe specialist stuff for underground working and maybe cranes.

If I was to just stop "new" oil, I would not be starting from here.

When the conversation revolves around what we can't do then we lose focus on what we can do.

I recently flew over the Beatrice offshore wind farm by helicopter and it's a stunning engineering achievement. When you look through the statistics in terms of generation & output you realise that none of our electricity should rely on oil and gas and none of our transportation should rely on fossil fuels.

Sure, gas heating is here for a while yet but that doesn't mean you just down tools. It might be impossible to run a current gas system on hydrogen but it might actually be possible to run them on electricity if it were cheap and available.

There's nuance missing from the conversation. The oil industry are continuing to protect their massive profits and the government continues to enable that and ministers personally profit from it. You have no idea how utterly ruthless that industry is.

Electric helicopter was it?

yep - if the just stop oil guys developed some IT skills they could produce interruption on one of the principal offenders, from their armchairs - flying
Gatwick workers strike seems fairly effective...

car tax currently £300 , parents yaris £200 some/most of that's environmental impact with bev's incentivized to zero
- so lets see a minimum £200 premium on transatlantic rishi

Surely the train would be lower emissions?

Was the journey essential?

** I don't care :D

I take your points and you make some good ones, but there is far too much focus on the individual even in your post. The fossil fuel industry has been very good at redirecting our attention to the individual instead of the system and big corporations.

Governments can do something about this, individuals can't: 71% of global emissions are produced by just 100 companies.

Governments could be boosting production of and research into wind turbines and solar panels massively, regulating the stock market by taxing fossil fuel dividends, making pension funds and encouraging institutions to divest from fossil fuel investments and of course changing planning laws and regulations to encourage clean energy investment and use.

Encouraging community clean energy through things like solar panels on schools and public buildings where the energy produced would be shared among the community would be a good idea too

The point of Just Stop (New) Oil's protests is to make sure this issue cannot be ignored by anyone, it is not about changing minds necessarily (in a separate effort they try to do that by talking to people at their events, the media are quiet on this though), that's all they can do and from this point of view their strategy is a success.

Whilst the numbers don’t look that good for flying, the numbers don’t tell the full story. How many people were on that flight for example compared to how many were in the car. The CO2 per person would look far better for flying.
