"Just stop oil"

If just stop oil is about stopping oil, why deface monuments or try to break the original copy of the Magna Carta? They are mindless posh thugs with their aim being to be as disruptive as possible.

It's mostly about attention seeking.

Sensible people know things aren't going to change over night. It will take at least a generation to replace oil. We don't even have a viable replacement yet really.

They want no new oil even though if that happened the world couldn't keep up with energy demand yet. Gonna take a good long time before getting to a point where oil can be stopped.

It's happening, but not at the pace these people want. The same people who go to protests on public transport and car/bus, in their synthetic clothing. Raging about something they have no idea about. Their whole lives are petroleum lives, and nobody has had it better, they provide no answers or suggestions, so they have time to protest :cry:

Change of approach by Just Stop Oil it seems - previously as noted before they've sought to undermine the courts and try for a bit of jury nullification but it seems the recent prison sentences and some other rather prominent protests/riots have maybe prompted them to change course.

They're not switching to admitting that they're acting illegally but peacefully, part of the issue with their previous approach was the denial of any guilt, if you want lenient treatment as some moral activist from courts then pleading guilty (and explaining that it was some moral act etc..) is generally better than pleading not guilty and then trying to turn the courtroom into a circus and openly aim for jury nullification.

Interestingly, their whole reason for protesting seems to have been updated - previously they "just" wanted to "stop oil" - which was explained as new licenses for oil in the North Sea, obviously even JSO realised we still need some oil.

But, dilemma time, the new UK government has already done that now - so game over, time to go home? Nope, they didn't "just" want that to happen it seems (what a surprise), now the demand isn't "just stop oil" but "establish a fossil fuel treaty"... seems they're still sticking with the old name though.

NB - this is only to discuss JSO not the riots for which there is a separate SC thread.

That JSO communication seems more like an call to action to say/threaten climate civil action will reach the same level as current riots,
whose origins they suggest are supposedly 'clearly' understood by them;
creating parallels between their cause and riots seems misplaced, just publicity seeking.

How jso or extinction rebellion adjust their strategies, post the recent trials is ongoung.

This is a spurious argument. In order to avoid using any products/energy derived from the fossil fuel industry in our current society you would have to go back to being a hunter-gatherer and living in a cave!

I do wish they’d stop posting pics of “the thing” whilst they’re whining on Twitter.

I guess it got bored when it had no more work as the protagonist in Starwars outlaws and Horizon forbidden west, so took up protesting to pass the time?
Not the first time that someone called Noah has warned people about climate change :)
