"Just stop oil"

How are all these batteries going to be made? Earth has approximately 88 million tonnes of lithium, but only one-quarter is economically viable to mine.

Also when they get to end of life, more will have to be mined and manufactured.

Earth simply doesn’t have enough resources for battery storage and EV’s.

Mining of the moon / mars may be a possibility if Elon pulls his finger out :D

That's next generation's problem :D

If we ever mine the Moon it will be for Helium 3 for space travel, not stuff to make EVs

yay! sucks for them.

the pyramid scheme of the pensions is about to collapse, house prices are through the roof,.wages are stagnant with inflation gutting income (with no triple.lock for workers unlike pensions -, pensions which the next gen will likely never get), decades.of under development and lack of maintenance of all our essential services means they are barely for for.purpose, the NHS is broke. and the climate is hitting crisis point.

seems like a lot of stuff is the next generations problem.

These problems are across the whole world. Overpopulation is the root cause, but no one wants to do anything about it.

AI has sorted itself out on that front, Its already made massive inroads into being able to control the plasma flows (big magnets) for Nuclear Fusion.
Any sources for that? Would have thought that would have been big news.

I think 95% of the components in a battery can be recycled? But agree that existing solutions can't be the final one as it's too environmentally damaging in the first place.

Batteries aren't really solving a problem, it's just moving it to Africa.

The problem with batteries is that there isn't a country in the world that has the infrastructure to support them. Not only that, but the generation of electricity must be green, and of course, again in every country, it's not. And there is no way we will have the infrastructure in time.

It's the same with so many government solutions. They just aren't realistic.

It's like hydrogen, it's just not a plausible solution, but most countries have a "plan" for introducing hydrogen. And fusion power. Did you know that UK government is "planning" on commercial reactors being available in ten years?

I'm not sure whether governments really believe their own plans or whether they know full well they aren't going to work and don't care because they won't be in power when the public finds out.

Just search for lithium mining and Africa and have a look..

Most of it is coming from pretty sketchy countries too.

Oh dear, one of those awkward moments when Nasher says something again, well this is awkward isn't it

Because you're probably a bit dense to understand the above, let me spell it out:

Here, to simplify it even more:

Zimbabwe, the only African country in the top 8, produces 1% of the world's lithium.

Honestly mate, try and monetize your ignorance and confidence, you'll be minted.

China has muscled in and taken over many of the mines in Africa.

They pretty much have a monopoly on it there, bribe officials, threaten locals who question it (the usual CCP procedures). The ore is exported back to China. Doesn't sound like a very good solution does it...

But Australia is sketchy.

Yes, that 1% of lithium produced in the one single African country that mines lithium is definitely at risk of killing the planet.

Jesus christ man, do you even have a brain?

You completely ignored the part where it clearly says China 60% of the "battery-grade" refining capacity?

That's because they import from AUS and strip the rest from Africa and take it to China, making the whole world reliant on them for EVs. Also not all Lithium can be used for batteries but this graph shows the overall total...

The vast majority of those countries aren’t known for looking after their citizens best interests, with next to no health and safety. We leave the dirty mining industry to the poor countries for us to exploit.

All western government’s care about is looking environmentally friendly at the expense of poor countries.

No no no, don't move the goalposts, you very clearly said "Google lithium mining in Africa" and you got proven wrong.

Let's not try and change tactics now shall we?

You were demonstrably wrong. Again. Proven wrong with actual facts no less.

Honestly you're such a meme at this point.

Since the earth does not have enough materials to be able to build all the batteries needed to replace other forms of energy storage, such as fossil fuels, battery prices will either start rising as supply drops, or if prices remain low, then products that need batteries will get priority- for example your mobile phone or laptop can't run without a battery but a car can still run without a battery
