"Just stop oil"

The IEA said the coal rebound, after a slump during the global Covid pandemic, means consumption of the fossil fuel is now on track to rise to a new peak of 8.77bn tonnes by the end of the year – and could remain at near-record levels until 2027.

The Paris-based agency blamed power plants for the growing use of coal over the last year, particularly in China which consumes 30% more of the polluting fuel than the rest of the world put together.

In developed economies such as the US and the European Union coal power generation has already passed its peak, the IEA said, and is forecast to fall by 5% and 12% respectively this year.

In the UK, coal power has been consigned to history after the last coal plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire generated its final megawatt in September, narrowly beating the government’s 2024 deadline.

We gotta to be doing something right. Germany remains the dirty man of Europe and China the world.

We are doing somethings sort of right, except importing a **** load of LNG which is THE dirtiest fuel of all the fossil fuels. It's also THE most expensive source of fuel we import.

We also import loads of wood pellets which are 'net zero' and pay Drax a huge load of subsidies for the privilege of them burning it which is a massive con and the most blatant case of nonsense greenwashing in our energy system.

So the U.K. has sacrificed her own energy security for the cube root of chuff-all difference in pollution levels?

It remains to be seen just how bad a situation we're in, but the IET have been warning for years that we're likely going to get blackouts during calm winter weather by the end of this decade. That was before this government decided to kill off what remains of indiginous gas production, which is also now likely to be significantly reduced compared to what it is currently.

At least we can always import it right?

UK gov will take sod all notice and still tax us to high heaven for some virtue signalling rubbish, makes me laugh, the same people who put the UK down as being insignificant think we can lead the way in green agendas, other countries will look at us destroying our prosperity and think how do I get me some of that, yeah ok :)

Surely the warm glow of self righteousness will keep us warm?

I know you said it as a joke, but probably not.
Dunkleflaut that beautiful German conjugated noun to describe an extended period of low low wind and solar power generation. It typically covers much of North West Europe at the same time and drives prices very high thanks to the interconnectors because all of the irresponsible countries (UK very much included) then scramble to secure supplies. Norway doesn't want to play this game anymore because the interconnectors are punishing them for being prudent. SO at the moment they're there but will they remain so, bit more dicey.
