The Hydra-Light PL-500 Personal Lantern is a breakthrough personal LED lantern & charger powered by an incredible technology - the Hydra-Light Salt Water EnergyCell. Simply add water and a little ordinary table salt for instant light and DC power.

thats not true thopugh.

the salt water is just the electrolyte you will need to buy "replaceable PowerRods" to make it work.

As the reaction cycle continues over time, the PowerRod gradually becomes consumed and slowly shrinks in size, turning into harmless mineral sediment. When the rod has become very thin, it is removed and a new one is inserted - which takes just seconds - making the cell like new and ready to continue generating power. All that’s needed during the lifetime of each PowerRod is a periodic rinsing out of the mineral sediment and re-filling with fresh salt water

yeah but they say you get 250hrs out of it, and you can store the power rods a lot longer than you can store batteries, its not ideal it need some sort of replaceable part, but it seem good option

Tbh, sounds like a lot of stuff to take with you rather than just... taking batteries?

Technologically quite cool, but in terms of practicality and real world usefulness, a bit pointless.

^That. Pointless gimmick imo.

Part of their whole pitch is that it would cut down on the amount of batteries we use and which end up in landfill.

That's great but I'm not a hippie. A rechargeable lantern lasts for years too. The batteries to landfill argument is very weak.

So here's the problems with this product...

They do not say how long your standard bottle of water will last before you have to refill it. The core lasts 250 hours but not the saltwater?

While you're going to get water/salt and refilling your lamp how will you see to do this? It's not as simple and clean as popping a few new batteries in, much more fiddly and.or time consuming.

For the size and weight of the lantern you could fit a really hefty battery which would last just as long.

It doesn't actually look that bright.

A £5 wind up & rechargeable torch/lamp combo is probably just as practical.

The only benefit this has (though I haven't looked into what is in the cores and how eco friendly they are) is that it is more eco friendly, as even if you use rechargeable batteries you're making pollution somewhere down the powergrid.

That said, not sure how it's better than a gas lamp.

The price isn't too bad though, I was expecting some $100 product or something.

So when that rechargeable lantern runs out in 6-10hrs how are you going to recharge it when you are in the wilderness?

I won't, I'll replace the battery with another one. Much like you'll replace the salt, water, and magic stick every time yours runs out :)

The difference being that I can always recharge my batteries at any socket, whereas when your magic stick is finished, so is your lamp.

Oh and I only buy batteries once and that's it, whereas you'll be paying for salt & magic sticks forever. And water, but that I equate the leccy I'll be paying for.

Water and salt is easy to get and generally free. Much easier than lugging batteries in wilderness. Not that im sold on it to big and bulky. Wind up still seems like the much better solution.

Like everything lots of tat on there. Haven't seen anything interesting in a while. Which is a good thing. Saves me money

The thing is that water and salt simply won't generate that much power. A battery will put out multiple times the power and also last ages. Two batteries the size of a cigarette box will probably run this lantern for days, and it'll emit real useable light.

only thing i've ever funded on kickstarter (so far). As someone in their 30's who has fond fond memories of ww2 based FPS games and hates all the new fangled call of duty clones with their powersuits and unlocks:

Going to pop for the console and steam pleadge, £40, I loved the division beta, seemed an element of skill in it, same goes for this, real shooting and cover mechanics and no jet packs

This part sounds great.

In short, Battalion 1944 is an infantry based first person shooter with an emphasis on raw skill. No grinding, no 'exosuits', just you and your skill as a player.

This sounds like it will suffer the usual stat whoring that kills so many games :(
