** LATE BUT IN FASHION: SAMSUNG G700 GAMING LAPTOP ARRIVING TOMORROW! **

One thing to note about this laptop (and presumably any performance laptop) is that it gets very hot!

My favoured laptopping spot is my bed, which is far from ideal - I have to balance it awkwardly to enable airflow from the vents.

I think I need a "spec me a laptop tray thingy" - like those things you see people using for breakfast in bed. :)

I use the metal top of an old video recorder. Perfect shape to fit over my lower half and provides a flat metal surface for the laptop to sit with the vents clear.

I have just ordered one, cheapest I could find was the s02uk version at Comet for £1299 (with free delivery and 2.5% cashback if you join quidco)

Seems they finally realised they priced it wrong there ;). It is not listed on their site anymore and when clicking the old link to it it shows "Sorry... we can't find the page you are looking for".. They also have no mention of it now at all.

I'm guessing the people that got their laptop from there should be really happy :D, I was surprised to see it go for that and I had a feeling it was priced wrong and they would click in time or refund people and not send the laptops out.

I tried to order one from Comet but I got a phone call about 10 minutes after my order to say they didnt have any in stock and that they would have to cancel my order. They didnt say when it would be back in stock, only to keep checking the website to see if it would come back...needless to say I ordered elsewhere but still had to pay slightly more of course, which I dont mind rather than being messed around by Comet...I doubt they would have honored the price it was advertised at...

Guys a heads-up lots of updates for the laptop that are not on the CDs that come with it.

People with S02UK version this page:

http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP700G7A-S02UK

People with S01UK version this page:

http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP700G7A-S01UK

There is a new Easy software Manager Software that is more stable (mine on the CD crashed in the end and would not run correctly even after reinstalling it and deleting all its remains in the registry and OS drive) and the new version will actually find updates online from Samsung for the laptop. Also there is a Firmware update for the laptop (BIOS Update, SO MAKE SURE TO RUN THIS ON THE POWER SUPPLY NOT THE BATTERY) the new software manager will show the update or you can download it from the links above under Firmware.

Hi joe,

Tried 3d/tridef tonight, and you load Tri-def 3d portal, and view movies, slides, and load games form here. Tridef "ignition" is were the games are detected, you can launch apps from there, or if they aren't listed, "add" them. Started with far cry 2, and when the game loads up, you can set 3D up from the onscreen panel that is loaded with the key num 0 button, and using numpad arrows to select.

From here there are loads of settings, from hig/low quality 3d (lower increses framerate) Depth/plane/ "Virtual" 3d (which isn't true 3d i don't think, but is for those with lower spec cards, as it increases frame rate. Got 45 frames in far cry 2 with 3D enabled, or thereabouts. I downloaded version 5.0 http://www.tridef.com/download/TriDef-3D-5.0.html

Tony you mention updating the TriDef software there in another thread, but did you have to buy a new activation for it ? Or did you just update right over it and it kept it activated as before ?. Also are you using the new 5.1 version that is currently available ?. Thanks

EDIT: Seems fine installing the 5.1 update and it is running and not asking to be activated or on a trial. I did notice in the start menu in the TriDef software list there is a buy and activate option there now, but I guess if you install the Samsung TriDef software from the Samsung CD first it auto activates it as an update. By the way dont run the Samsung SyncMaster OEM update there it will cause the TriDef to ask for activation, seems it is for Samsung monitors only that (I thought the laptop had one and tried the update guess it does not look at it that way . Thanks Tony..

Well, just installed 5.1, and says in the user manual "If TriDef 3D came bundled with your 3D monitor, or was pre-installed on your 3D notebook/PC, then activation is not usually required.

Guys another thing I spotted today. Battery Not charging while in Windows 7 with the AC/PSU plugged in and on. I have a totally clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate here with all the drivers from Samsung. Not using the supplied Windows 7 and restore area (deleted the whole Samsung Factory restore partition, waste of space for me).

Once I was in windows and had the PSU plugged in I noticed the battery/AC area was saying plugged in/not charging ... Seems a known fault of Windows 7 and anyway there is a simple fix if you find you have this problem with this laptop or any other laptop.

This is what you need to do in this order:-

1- Disconnect AC
2- Shutdown
3- Remove battery
4- Connect AC
5- Startup
6- Under the Batteries category in device manager (system properties), right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1, normal on the Samsung laptop, but other makes with more than 1 battery may show more).
7- Shutdown
8- Disconnect AC
9- Insert battery
10- Connect AC
11- Startup
12- let windows startup 100% and it may still say not charging at first but give it a few mins and it will say charging again. Problem fixed.

Also a note the Samsung Laptop in Windows will show charged at 98% and will stop charging unless it goes lower later, so don't panic if it says 98% charged and not charging that is normal too for the Samsung Laptop.

Hi purge

I tried what you said, as my battery always says "98% available" (plugged in not charging) on samsung optimised setting (balnced mode) I followed your instruction, and 1 hour later, it still says 98% - which i guess is ok...

What im going to do though is drain the battery (BF3 for 5 mins should suffice):) then recharge it.

Tony

Antx777 you may need to recalibrate the battery, you can do that in the BIOS, make sure to unplug the AC and run the tool that is in the BIOS till it switches off and kills the battery back to 0%. I did that yersterday and seems the battery is now showing a more real value to what really is remaining. The tool basically nukes the battery back to 0% and then do a full recharge till it hits 100% (takes about 2 and half hours for a full recharge from 0%). The 98% not charging is probably normal mate too, it is probably waiting to go down to under 90% before it starts to charge again but worth recalibrating the battery too, I find doing that also makes the battery last longer with every laptop I have ever done that with.

If the laptop didn't have the recalibrate the battery option I would wait till the battery was really low and then go into the BIOS and just let it sit there till it powered down and then do a full recharge again. Reason I say better to sit in the BIOS rather than Windows is because windows keeps writing stuff to the Hard Drives and it may end up losing power as it is writing stuff to a drive and may cause some data errors on the drive it was trying to write to. So safer to lose power in the BIOS.

Very pleased with samsung support so far. I emailed them this morning about 8ish.. Just recieved a reply asking me to confirm my warranty details etc, and once the process is complete they will send mez out a replacement part within the next 7-10 business days :)

EDIT:
Confirmed, Replacement part coming within the next 7-10 working days. Hopefully this one will hold in. Not doing too much intensive work, going to stay away from the games. Not 100% sure which part that pin powers, I assume it's on some sort of 2 rail system, one part powers like the CPU etc, gfx other etc. Who knows :) - I think because I had to bend the pin back, I've revealed a good point of contact for the power to go through, so I hope.

Overall, Fantastic laptop. Think I'll think twice before putting the lead anywhere near the laptop next time!!

I have the S01UK model, but took out 1 of the 750GB HDD, and replaced it with an SSD :)

George did they send you the replacement power supply in the end and did you have to send the old one back before they replaced it ? I have a mate with a different Samsung laptop with another faulty Power supply but they said they would replace his in a week to 2 weeks but he seems to be getting messed about. It has been over 2 months now :(.

If you you still have the details who at Samsung you contacted mate can you let me have the details so I can pass them on to him. Thanks.

P.S George_w can you set-up your trust here too mate, just click trust in any of your posts and follow the instructions. :). That way can email you direct too and also when you get enough posts you can use the Members Market here too.

Has this thing really got a subwoofer?

I can't "hear" it and any sound option bar stereo is greyed out. It's also odd that, even when headphones are plugged in (which work fine) the software still sees them as speakers.

On a related note, if I want simulated surround through a decent pair of stereo cans (the best option, apparently) is there complicated connectivity involved or does Dolby work its witchcraft through the standard headphone socket?
