Lenovo x121e netbook

Got my x121e last Friday with 2gb of ram & 6 cell for £334, bought 8gb of ram and a kingston 96gb ssd to go in it. SSD would not fit fully as the x121e only takes 7mm 2.5" disks

Ooops 7mm limit on SSD thickness, if the 9.5 mm SSD cannot be used then thats me eliminated as my SSD Crucial C300 256 GB is too expensive to leave as a stranded asset. Pity I really like the look of this machine

I checked the Lenovo website and it appears the X121e comes with mobile broadband pre-installed. Can anyone confirm that there is a simcard slot to take 3 mobile broadband sim with out having to use my external usb dongle?

From the hardware manual it looked like there was a slot underneath the cover for the HDD, RAM, etc.

EDIT: Oh, actually, it's where you insert the battery. My bad.

Intel SSDs excluding he 320 series are 7mm, theres also an msata slot behind the abttery that you can fit a msata ssd in (intel makes some)
i think corsair also makes 7mm SSDs with a backplate that adds 2mm, so if oyu take off the backplate they fit (actually i think the 320 series from intel is the same) but can't remember my source for that so you'll have to confirm for yourself.

I'm considering one of these, since I need a light notebook for class.

To those who've gotten one with a 6-cell battery, what's the weight like?

Also, my last laptop was a Vostro 1500 with a T7300 processor (2.0GHz Merom C2D). Does anyone know how the i3 2357m @ 1.3GHz in this will compare, given that it doesn't have turbo?

hi there, looking on passmark the i3-2375m in the lenovo scores 1600 http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i3-2357M+@+1.30GHz

the T7300 only score 1151 but there are many other benefits to the i3 ulv inc graphics and power management so it will clearly be quicker http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Core2+Duo+T7300+@+2.00GHz

an i3-380m (2.53ghz) scores 2300 and i3-2310m (2.1ghz) gen 2 scores 2500 to give you an idea of performance.

the new amd E-350 cpu with ati 6310 graphics which is being found in a lot of low end notebooks these days only scores 728 yet this is being sold as a suitable laptop for work and gaming in 15" and 17" at some stores. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+E-350. an atom z550 will score half that though.

hope this helps.

I have a 7mm 120GB Intel 320 on order - I should get it next week.

The laptop is very light even with the 6 cell - 1.5kg I think. It also feels solid - very well made. The screen is only average (non glossy though -big plus).

I went from a first gen Mx11 to this and am very happy, though I have lost some 3D horse power all the games I play still work with the detail turned down slightly - Civ5, Nap Total war, Bloodbowl.

I tried the SSD (just couldn't get the bottom back on) and its painful going back to the mechanical disk - I'm ruined now :(

Thanks for the reply mrk1@1. There isn't much info yet on the 2357m that I could find.

According to that chart sandy bridge seems to be twice as fast as the C2D architecture clock for clock. Is that really realistic? I was expecting about 40% faster.

Regarding the E-350 I'm one of those who really wanted the X120e, but ofcourse they never released it here. Mainly I wanted fusion because I trust AMD a lot more on the GPU side than I do intel, especially for drivers. But I hear the hd3000 isn't too bad and has good support for DXVA so it should be fine.

the thing is the 6310 GPU which comes with the Fusion graphics is not a good performer

a lot of people seem to think it is going to be good as it is dedicated but it scores in the same region as an older ati 4250 but with the low power CPU it hinders it further http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6310.40952.0.html.

ok so it is a massive leap over netbooks but the manufacturers keep putting it in 15 & 17 laptops which is clearly isn't for. It is not a patch on the HD 3000 graphics

I know how slow these integrated parts are for modern games, but that doesn't really matter for me since I tend not to game on the move. What's important to me is compatibility and the ability to hardware accelerate video (at times when it can't software decode it). Previous generations of Intel GPUs weren't even able to do this as well as ATI/Nvidia implementations plus there were compatibility problems due to a lack of software support. That's why I've always liked to buy laptops with ATI/Nvidia GPUs whether they're integrated or not. But the sandy bridge GPU seems to be well supported so that's great.

In regards to the HD3000 graphics being faster than Zacate on this device, I wouldn't be so sure. The ULV parts use a reduced clockspeed on the GPU of 350MHz, whereas I believe the standard voltage parts use 650MHz.

This review shows them to be evenly matched.

You are right, in reality it's nowhere near twice as fast. In some applications even 40% is optimistic.

Thank You. I wanted some human input on it rather than just benchmarks.

There's another 10% code going at the moment, XAUG10.

You can get the top spec (sans SSD) for £370 delivered, bargain.

I'm looking for a nice, responsive, smooth and well built small laptop that will double up as a media centre over my HD TV sometimes. Is this one a good choice? Thanks!

It says so.

It actually say 3G modem - Upgradeable.

Does that mean it doesn't have one and is upgradeable with the 100quid option on the site or that it has a basic version that is upgradeable.

I am very tempted by this particularly with current discounts.
