LG 42-inch OLED

All AI stuff off, game optimised mode on my desktop pc seems fine. I've been watching a few seasons of always sunny on netflix in a window and that seems fine. What are you watching specifically where I can check out this black crushing?

edit: does disabling TPC help you @R3X Also is your hdmi set to full instead of limited when using a PC?

Black crushing occurs in dark scenes, so really does depend what you are watching. Movies and Tv series set in dark or midnight scenes would reveal it within seconds. Be it Batman films or Halo tv series, batwomen tv series triggers it within any dark scene which is there most of the time. A lot has to do with your settings though if you watch in day time mainly and have standard picture mode on or isf bright defaults on you won't notice it as much, actually might not notice it at all if you are watching bbc news and Friends tv series, but if you watch during night time when its dark with filmmaker mode or isf dark accurate modes and OLED light 35-45 (which is what is recommended) then you will see it. Using brighter TV modes or settings in night viewing can help... but it won't ever look right and will be overbearing and bad for eyes.

Yes matched video range both ends so they are correct, Auto on the TV so far has matched source or other end perfectly but I have tested it limited to limited and high to high with same results. Raised whites or glowing black bars would show a wrong video range within seconds too.

This guy shows the "black level upping" fix, but then mentions the pixels coming on think he meant pixilation fault, pixel flashing etc which is the inaccuracies in this temp quick fix.

Another one that discusses it briefly, mentions blacks turning grey (inaccurate):

This calibrator released a good video and alternative fix, but I call it Alternative since you end up pushing colours and contrast incorrectly in other scenes, he also recommends proper calibration as the proper long term fix.

Basically no quick fixes, TV calibration is the proper fix its even what my tv calibrator said.

Really tempted to get this on the Argos deal, I can get a discount through work making it £912 plus £100 voucher, £100 of nectar points and sound bar which I can sell on effectively making the TV around £600 it's just the warranty putting me off.

£600 is silly crazy, most on here paid 1.2k (on offer) back in February including myself. Let that sink in for a minute lol

LG I believe offer a DG extended warranty card in the box or you can contact Domestic and General to get it extended. You might also check the DG site and with LG directly to see if it can be extended or how much an out of warranty repair would cost. I would do this while its in its 30 days though.

LG also sometimes offer an panel swap service or out of warranty repair its sometimes £300-500 though.

You might want to find local LG authorised tv repairers and get quotes, if you are good with PC repairs you probably could replace a TV mainboard or power supply usually £50-80 on ebay even.

Thanks for that. The last video test pattern looks okay to me when I watch it on youtube. Maybe I'm not looking at it properly or I'm being dumb haha. I'll try to find some dark content to watch and look out for it :)

Test patterns are a great way to see what black level detail you should be getting, good for colours and everything else really.

That black shadow test can be downloaded here this is the proper file to run.

should-look-like-this.jpg

Top left 16 should be blank and it runs downwards to bottom right so 16, 17, 18 etc all should be blank. Top left box 17 and 18 boxes should be visible,
they might be slightly showing but this is good enough. You can certainly tweak or play around with picture settings, black level, gamma, OLED light etc
to try to get around the black crush but as I suggest it can cause other picture issues so calibration is the better long term fix. Some TVs don't have this crush issue so some come out pretty good.

I also like these pattern test but they cost 99p, these are more easier to understand with flashing bars and reference being black.

Ah I see the soundbar has appeared back in stock but collection only for me, absolutely no idea if the boxed screen would fit in the back of my car so best not risk it :p Annoying that it doesn't let me select delivery for 1 item and collection for the other.

Will be interesting to hear how well you were able to see the black blocks pattern test if you get a chance, it has to be seen in a pitch black room and your eyes take a good 10-20 secs to adjust to darkness too.

Forgot to also say yes TPC and GSR are switched off, since most of the content I watch has dark scenes I can't have it going dim half way through and hdmi full is also on on all sources pc, shield, virgin media etc.

LG C42and wall mount

Please excuse the mess

Nice wall mount just make sure its very secure when going into the wall if its not solid brick gotta be the wooden studs!

At least the C2 is so light and easy to pick up and handle, makes life much easier.

Interesting bit from Vincent Teoh regarding C42 and Sony A80k with regards to black detail (C42 bit more better once calibrated)

I was a bit worried about what to go for but this seems to be the most sturdy one I've seen so far. The thing seems heavier than my oled!

Ill check out that test video when I get the chance, just been tired with work etc so I've been quite lazy about testing etc

I find the hdtvtest videos really informative :)

Quick pic with the light on while I'm on lunch break. Using vlc player

Looks slightly darker than what you can see in the pic but the pattern and visibility is the same.

I think the PC does not always play it back properly, I think you had windows HDR left on?

LGs built in app via pen drive or Nvidia shield should play it back properly.

Still looking nice, give it a good 200-300 hours run in or few weeks and things will improve black crush and picture quality wise.

Yeah hdr was on, I'll stick it on a stick to test later.

@R3X So, in a dark room I booted the file straight from usb. I could see straight away it didn't look right. I checked picture mode and it was on "power saving", changed it to standard. Changing gamma from 2.4 to 2.2 helped a bit, but what really helped was just upping black level from 50 to 60 in the brightness settings. As you can see in the pictures it made a massive improvement.

Yup black level 60 will do that, gamma 2.2 helps also. Both will sometimes create picture quality problems.
Give it a good few weeks use and it will improve, its recommended to set black level to 50 after 200-300 hours usage.

£759 for buds and 5 year is insane frankly, wont be surprised it comes down more for black friday by the bigger retailers out there.

The 42 box will easily fit in a car, even a mini from the 50's
