LG 48CX OLED - 4K 120 Hz

I wonder if anyone else have this “issue” re buying a 48 CX as monitor?

my main TV is a 1.5 years old 55” Samsung QLED (4k 60hz only).which I’m happy with.

but if I buy the 48 CX as monitor, then I can’t go back to the QLED for regular TV/Film viewing as the PQ downgrade will be noticeable, this means I have to replace the main TV with another 55” CX too,so buying 2 CXs..and spending nearly 3 grand.
That’s a lot on money to invest on TVs!

Its happen quite a fair bit, few guys are moving their 55" or 65" oleds into the living room and getting a 48" for the gaming/pc side of things.

Would have been very nice if Lg electronics announced the 30" OLED and 42" OLED monitors, I think more would go with those then a 48" or allow better combos may 30" oled on left for surfing and 42" on right for gaming/pc and movies.

Bear in mind it's a burn in risk if you game regularly with the black bars.

Yeah its a good point, if you have the screen in ultrawide 100% of the time it will get uneven wear. You will probably notice after 10k+ hours some difference in the wear between the areas. But for occasional FPS I think it's perfectly fine.

It will be amazing if they make smaller than 40” OLED..the reality is 48 is really not meant to be used on a desk.

I don’t buy LG’s manufacturing difficulty excuse for smaller sizes and think it’s mainly a strategic decision.
maybe they know the market for a smaller (and yet pricey) screen is niche and they can’t sell as many as larger 55”+ sizes.

I always had OLED screens..phones,tablets even 14” Samsung Windows laptop/tablet hybrid.
can’t accept technical difficulties only affecting in between sizes.

a lot of this is probably because lack of competition, with LG currently being the only large screen OLED manufacturer (I heard they acquired OLED technology and patent from Kodak and others decided not to invest in research making their own big OLED screens) so right now LG have monopoly and can do whatever they want size and spec wise.

I’m sure this will change once Samsung enters the large size OLED manufacturing market.

They are not going to rush on anything smaller than 48. Smaller onese might be in the pipeline but, it will kill most of the sales of any of the big monitors, including LG's own line.

Hence why I decided to take the plunge.

Had the option of

  • Alienware 38" = for about £1200
  • Samsung G9 for about £1200 or
  • CX48 for £1270

Went with the CX48, Let hope you guys say its as good as it is.

Lets see how it pairs up with the 3090, 4K here we go.

I've had this TV (monitor) for 2 days now and it's a brilliant gaming monitor. I feel that the response time is better than my 1440p 144 Hz.

I've not noticed the loss in frame rate going from 1440p to 4k and I'm putting that down to what I said above about the response feel.

The detail is amazing I have a 75" Samsung in the same room both are excellent but the LG is just better watching BBC i player nature program's Streaming just shows off the quality of the picture.

The up scaling of the LG is really good I've tried it against DLSS, DLSS is just a little bit better but lowering the resolution to 1440p is excellent way ahead of the samsung.

It's not as bright as my IPS gaming monitor but the image quality makes that redundant.

Very happy with the product I'm using this with 3090.

I need to find out if I can channel the sound when watching TV to my headphones connected to my pc without any other cables.

Have received my CX on Sunday I am blown away by the image it produces. Great for Films and Gaming :)

Have resigned myself to forget burn and use as I would a normal monitor for my productivity. I was going to share tasks with 2 other 30" Dell, but with some caveats. OLED light is on 36 all time mostly on game or Dark ISF mode, icons are on dells and taskbar is auto hid. Still running a fixed background which is very dark I doubt will cause much of any issue I hope. Although will research animated backgrounds later. Will sort out powertoys software also later.
Had the TV around 100cm from me at first since then have moved it closer 80cm as finding my eyesight problematic as need an overdue eye test having to switch glasses to view side Dells all time is annoying. Hence my commitment to use this as main productivity display. I have TV software on PC which I use to bring up full screen on empty black channel as screen block if leaving room, but problem mostly I have is after given time CX loses signal where other monitors would go into standby. It will not come back from loss of signal and Dells go blank have to hard reset. Which is a real pain at minute have to find a workaround.

Overall very impressed not finding to large either really just need to adjust my working on it. I use F11 a lot on browser but this goes full screen all time. I am hoping with powertoys configured if I press F11 it will only expand to limits of set grid. Just thought I would jot down some first impressions for those who are interested.
Thankfully I have again talked myself out of buying one (I was never really that close).

1. It's too big. It really is. I don't have a deep enough desk and something that big pressed up against my face would be uncomfortable.
2. I don't want the hassle of hiding the taskbar, having no icons on the desktop (mine's pretty cluttered I'll admit), alternating or animated backgrounds. Seriously animated backgrounds would drive me mental. I also don't want to be moving my windows (ie browser) around the screen, to make sure no UI elements stay in the same place too long.
3. It's too expensive to not be a 100% perfect match for my needs. I'll settle for something 1/3rd the price, with **** picture quality, that I can at least use without needing to babysit it.
4. I'm on my PC 8-12 hours a day. With the same UI elements on the screen practically at all times. VS Code, browser, Teams. All in the same place all day long. I'm not going to change that. I can't be arsed.
5. I've never used an OLED so can't miss something I've never experienced :D

Just ordered for £1279 at the shop with two first names + the 5 year protection for burn-in.

Do I need to get a HDMI cable for my PC? (2070 Super) - if so which? Or does a compatible one come with the TV in the box?

Thanks in advance :)

Yep no hdmi cable in the box, I'm guessing as the 2070 does not have 2.1 hdmi then any decent 4k cable will be fine

I also narrowed it down to the Alienware or the CX. The Alienware for me had some issues contrast and the local dimming mainly. If you are prepared to work with it not pander to much to it, and give yourself time to settle into it. I think you will be nightly impressed enjoy I think you made right decision :)

1. Agree you might find it that way, but I personally will settle into it myself. You do need a fairly deep desk. Actually quite the opposite where you say"something that big pressed up against my face would be uncomfortable". Coming from my Dell 30" they were far closer and sitting in front of them 10 or 12 hours or more all day I get face burn and it felt hot at times. Whereas at 80cm the CX so far is more comfortable. Actually using the CX rather than turning to side to reference the other Dell I as I used to I can fit all my programs on the one screen with less head turning. Another thing it may be better for my eyesight long term as I have more focal length now than before.
2. Agree I hate hiding taskbar. The animated background I think I might forgo myself as I have a very dark Alan Wake background been using for many years. I don't think it will cause much issue so might run with that.
3. I actually think the price is about right compare to Dells I paid £800 for some 13 years ago. I just hope I can get at least 5 years or more out of the CX.
4.This is where I will concede to using a side Dell to pamper the CX.
5.True ;) Part of reason I went for it fed up with Monitors going no where with no vertical real estate, and not large enough over what I had with a lot with one issue or another.

Will give it a try.

It will work with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable, you can get them for 2-3 quid of flebay

Just have to connect to Line in (usually blue connector on back of pc) and just enable/tick line in on your soundcard properties. Also adjust your CX sound setting to audio out mode rather then tv speaker.

Just bare in mind it introduces a nasty hiss when you do this so if you are listening to music or really want the best sound quality you need to use the optical audio out on the CX instead, but you then need optical input (tosh link) on your soundcard or suitable amp, headphone amp/dac etc

The hiss drove me mad so got a dedicated headphone amp with optical input to do this they cost £30-150+ though, I think you can get cheaper units of flebay for 20-30 quid with optical input its like a usb soundcard.

.

They are making the 42” this year.

It won’t effect sales of monitors,it’s still a TV and not everyone is going to buy it over a conventional monitor.

they even said they are going yo make 20-30” ones, they aren’t worried about monitor sales and are pushing OLED full force.
