LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor

If you like Samsara it's worth checking out koyanasqattsi, powaquattsi and Baraka. All beautiful movies. Can't remember the name of the third quattsi film. Think it's Naqoyaquattsi. Not as good as first two but worth a watch.

My first IPS screen and def notice the glow. Was watching episode of breaking bad and three of the four corners were glowing. Had some bleed on prev monitor which was TN panel (I think) so used to this kind of thing.

I just caved after thinking about this for over 2 weeks saw OCUK stock go down to 1 left this evening I just bought that one ;) so the cupboard is bare until OCUK get some more (elsewhere are much more expensive some as much as £150-200 more so OCUK got a decent price on this little batch I doubt the next lot will be so cheap somehow..........)

Even though I have reservations about a lot of games just not or ever supporting 21:9 I will take my chances as this cost me £0 due to a tax rebate & selling my old display soon ;)

Already seen some HD clips from Samsara and am blown away by the quality of the production. So good and that's exactly the kind of imagery I want to capture in still photography if I am ever lucky enough to travel the world without having to be constrained by time to get back to the UK.

One can only dream eh.

Are you talking about the 34UM95? I haven't seen the status on the site change from "Overdue"

I really hope you are not meaning the UM95. The site has said overdue for nearly a week now and I have one on pre order.

Called up UPS. Had them confirm delivery to me on Friday. Yet the package is out for delivery today. Well that's going to be useful.

edit: Okay, never mind, my wonderful neighbour took delivery for me. Those guys are always taking deliveries for us. Gonna have to get them a gift or something.

I've been using the 34UM95 for a few days and to be honest I'm not completely convinced the aspect ratio is for me. I've come from a 3007 and although the LG is significantly wider, the step down in physical height was just as, if not more impacting that the gain in screen width.

I can't fault the screen pq-wise, I'm just not sure about the aspect. Another thought that keeps surfacing is that for the money spent I can't help but feel I could have moved to a proper 4k set up rather than the quasi-4k that the UM95 provides. For the same money I could pick up one of the new 4k 28" screens and another R9 290... I'm seriously considering this route - although I do realise that this will not give any more screen height and will simply be like chopping a few inches off the end of this screen.

If only we could get proper 4K in 30-32" 16:9...

What about a 1440p 32 inch? There's a BenQ knocking about and as I mentioned previously on this thread I'm seriously torn between that and this Lg. I'm coming from a 27 inch 1440p so if i went for the BenQ the physical increase in size is substantial but the resolution the same so would I technically be gaining any real estate?

You are sowing seeds of doubt in my mind now! Was torn between the LG and the yet to be released Samsung 4k jobbie. I've pre ordered the lg but I'm sure it'll be easy enough to cancel. Just not sure. The only reason I didn't go 4k was the worry my rig might struggle to cope. Just out of curiosity how much height to you lose compared to a 27"?

Cheers

You don't lose any height compared to a 27 inch, exactly the same. Check out display wars mentioned above ;)

Yeah I meant the UM65. To power the UM95 for serious PC gaming takes more than my single GTX 780 Ti the UM65 is enough for me its only really for web surfing some casual PC gaming & the occasional movie.

I have a 60" Plasma connected to my other PC for gaming & movies as well ;)

Alan Wake, Batman Arkham Asylum, City, Shadow Warrior 2013 & a few others with native 21:9 support. mrk + Jedifragger swung it for me in the end ;)

Pics/thoughts will follow when I get the monitor hopefully tomorrow but OCUK/LG :D did an amazing deal price wise on this its around £600-700 elsewhere (UM95 prices on UM65  ) where they do have stock

Ok sorry, mis understood. So you are coming from a 30" 1440p?

Just read your post properly. I see you are indeed coming from a 30". In that case I think I'll keep my pre order for the um95. For me the jump in size should be significant.

Cheers

If you meant me, I'm coming from 30" 1600p (2560x1600).

Some stats from comparing screen sizes and resolution:

16:9 27" 1080p - W=23.53", H=13.24", PPI=81.59, megapixels=2.07
16:10 30" 1600p (my Dell 3007) - W=25.44", H=15.9", PPI=100.63, megapixels=4.09
21:9 34" (LG UM95, 3440x1440) - W=31.25", H=13.4", PPI=110, megapixels=4.95
16:9 28" (2160p 4K) - W=24.4", H=13.73", PPI=157.35, megapixels=8.29

So coming from a 30" Dell to a 34" UM95 I've gained 5.81" width, lost 2.5" height and don't have significantly more PPI. So I'm looking at it from the point of view that I could go 28" 4K and see a nice PPI boost but put up with lower PQ and slightly smaller screen but in a more appealing aspect ratio. It's a tricky one:)

Nice gifs, not sure how I feel about losing some of the picture in those films though. I guess you can't get around that unless it was filmed natively in 21:9.

I wish this was 120Hz! Would be an instant buy for me. Guess we will never see that on IPS.
