LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor

Some stats from comparing screen sizes and resolution:

16:9 27" 1080p - W=23.53", H=13.24", PPI=81.59, megapixels=2.07
16:10 30" 1600p (my Dell 3007) - W=25.44", H=15.9", PPI=100.63, megapixels=4.09
21:9 34" (LG UM95, 3440x1440) - W=31.25", H=13.4", PPI=110, megapixels=4.95
16:9 28" (2160p 4K) - W=24.4", H=13.73", PPI=157.35, megapixels=8.29

So coming from a 30" Dell to a 34" UM95 I've gained 5.81" width, lost 2.5" height and don't have significantly more PPI. So I'm looking at it from the point of view that I could go 28" 4K and see a nice PPI boost but put up with lower PQ and slightly smaller screen but in a more appealing aspect ratio. It's a tricky one:)

I had the Dell 3008WFP, similar to your monitor. The PPI jump is actually very noticeable, text looks a lot sharper on the UM95, yet not to the point of impacting readability.

The loss of vertical height hasn't bothered me either, I ended up moving my taskbar to the side of the screen to compensate.

Going 4K doesn't seem like a good idea at those sizes, besides all the scaling issues I think you'd be losing screen real estate compared to a 30" 2560x1600 after upping the DPI.

Says free delivery now on the um95! Does that mean I get free delivery now? Also has an eta for today. Let's hope so.

Is delivery from OCUK not always free? Of course I wouldn't know this being from Northern Ireland and have always had to pay through the nose for delivery and it doesn't even get it here any faster! Even with the "Free Delivery" promo when I go basket it's still charging me £10.

But you're right, at least there's an ETA now...

No delivery isn't usually free though very reasonable. That promotion definitely wasn't there when I ordered a few days ago.

Got mine up and running. Hmm... How's the glow for the rest of you? Seems a bit excessive for me in the lower left corner. Almost orangey in colour.

Here's one with the brightness at 40 (in the dark).

And here's another with it set to 10 (with a small amount of light).

Taken with my crappy iPhone 5, of course, but I waited to make it as close as possible to what I'm seeing. Are there any tips for settings? MRK what does yours look like in the dark with a black background?

Brightness at 40 is rather high no? Mine is at 14 as set by LG's software during calibration. Anyhoo, glow is there but not like your pictures show! I think I mentioned before that on mine the glow is more or less the same as the Dell 27" I had before, just covered over more screen area as it's wider so it's nothing out of the ordinary for me.

Still liking the 21.9 aspect ratio mrk?

What about imax scenes in films i.e. Nolan's batman films, do you lose much of the screen content when they cut in?

Trying to decide if I should upgrade from my dell u2311h to the 29UM65

IMAX scenes on this look like 16:9 scenes do with windowboxes on each side. It's fine really!

As for the aspect ratio...

See for yourself ;)

I've not seen either in person but as yours is 1080 high as is the 29" you will probably appreciate the aspect ratio improvement like I did going from 27" 1440P to this. Especially in games/movies!

I really dig the colours, pixel pitch and the aspect ratio, but yes, I turned down the brightness to 15 and then gave Prometheus on Blu-Ray a go. During the opening scenes I was even getting some discolouration in the lower-left corner of the blue-ish landscapes of Iceland. It's definitely worse than my 24" IPS ever was.

Not sure what to do. On the one hand I really like the 34UM95, but on the other I feel it should be pretty darn excellent for £800. But sending it back would be a pain, too.

Will try it out for a couple of days and see how I feel.

And ordered!

Although still having doubts.... :( I just hope everything else is a nice noticeable improvement i.e. colours, sharpness etc.

Mrk can you test a screen capture video and see if youtube uses/handles 21:9?

I was primarily looking at the 4K one due to it's 16:9, and that allows me to test and cover games in a much greater resolution, and developers always want a little video on youtube as well showcasing the game. If youtube takes 21:9 well without mental black bars everywhere, things will be great.
I'm horribly torn between this and a 4K one. For productivity this will help so bloody much!

^I've watched youtube videos that are 21:9 no problems. There are quite a few from trailers to short movies.

Can you link some here please. All Ive found are one in 720p, riddled with black bars. :(

Plus the fact that the monitor support Thunderbolt, means It'll fit my mac pro really well.

I will when I get home, my work screens are not 21:9 :p

Thing with trailers is you will find multiple versions of the same trailer, one with native 21:9, one without... Wish they were all natively 21:9!

Thanks mate, I've been looking at the AOC/Asus 4K displays, and then you came along!

Also when you get home can you check to see if this video plays well for you?

I've black bars on my end, and I assume it's due to me having a 16:9 display.
