London pollution & ULEZ

OK, a question for those who support this expansion.

If it is genuinely about air quality quality then instead of costly infrastructure being put in place (which will no doubt be used for road charging etc) then wouldn't it be a better approach to gradually start increasing the road tax (VED) on non-compliant vehicles? It could be ratcheted up each year. It means no expensive infrastructure to put in place and maintain. No sudden shocks to people. The benefits would be felt across the whole country instead of just one area. Eventually it would become more economical to replace the car/van/bike with a more modern one and people would have several years advanced notice as the price is gradually increased.

Instead we get this.

I somewhat agree, when I used to live in inner London I had great transport links and agreed that a car was not necessary. However, living out on the edge of London is a totally different story whe it comes to public transport and distances to shops, GPs, Chemists, hospitals etc....

Zip cars are not available iny area and Uber are only around during the day time at night forget it.

And now I have a baby and we did have to purchase a car.
In fairness I always forget about people with kids because I can't think of anything worse than having my own :p

Having a car certainly would be easier with kids, especially when they're too young to walk by themselves.

A typical electric car battery will last 10-20 years too.

Hmm. Last maybe. How usable will it be then though and what future waste will there be from all the people that have to scrap old cars. The second hand car market helped to eradicate wastage by re-use of old cars. It may not function as well with EV cars.

You lose about 2% capacity per year.

Really? I expect it's more. Let's say it's 2% anyway. So after 10 years you are now only getting 240 miles out of your 300 mile original range. I mean yeah it's not awful but meh.

It is reusable though, even if it does need to be replaced it's not a total waste.

Reusable as in take it out and use for something else, or are you saying people would still buy the old EV car and use it? If the later, this is the very point, people are concerned of buying old EVs due to this. If the former, I can't think of many usage cases for that which would realistically work.

Batteries cost £3,000-£10,000 right now, dependant on model/capacity. That wouldn't write off a car and having a brand new battery would increase value, if anything.

Also, battery costs have plummeted. They were £700 kw/h in 2010, they're about £80 now. So in the hypothetical 10-20 years they could drop again to £20 kw/h and would be a cheap fix.

I expect the labour alone to replace an entire battery deep in the chassis of some EVs would be huge. I'm not sure they even build them realistically to accommodate such work? The model seems to be more based around it being in the car for life.

The above emissions are still created. They are just polluting someone else rather than where the driver is using the car. But the next two will still be creating pollution as the car is driven:

* Brake dust.
* Rubber tyre particles.

I thought that these were just as bad/worse than the fuel emissions but I might be talking complete rubbish.

Perhaps people will start using public transport and walking/cycling more now if they can't afford to drive 5 minutes to the shops because they can't be bothered to walk.

Then perhaps more focus will be given to infrastructure around those modes of transport.

Its a right faff to try and prove an older vehicle.

You have to send them your V5 plus a certificate of confomaty, which no doubt you'll get charged for, oh and of course generate an account so they can harvest your information. My motorcycle is an Suzuki SV 650 K3, Suzuki's stance is, meh, just pay it, or if you live in London rather than spending £262 per month, just buy a new motorcycle, the monthly costs will be less.

So, I will have to scrap my old motorcycle thats perfectly fine, to buy a new one, considering all the energy and resource involved in making that (eg bad for enviroment) to get a new one, that probably doesn't release any more harmful gasses anyway.

Well if they had more bins, and more bin collections it would change.

Our system is design to fine you.

******** would it. Take your rubbish home or keep walking until you find another bin. I have never intentionally littered in my life. I'm 36. There is absolutely no excuse. The people that litter are almost entirely the dregs of society. The ones that drop their KFC bag out their car window after they are done because they can't be bothered to walk 2m. The ones that eat and drink in the park and just abandon it. The ones who eat a chocolate bar and just chuck the wrapper on the floor. The scum of society.

Question...
I wonder if there are any hacks or anomalies for escaping camera capture despite being inside the zone. Are there any forward facing only cameras for example? ;)

I think they’d rather have affordable transport vs the marginal air improvement any time soon.

Busses in London cost £1.70 for unlimited journeys within 1 hour I believe, seems very affordable to me and most of the time gets you places quicker than the tube.

Probably even quicker now the city won't be full of idiots in fancy cars for no reason.

London voted for him so perhaps they did.
either I am wrong (quite possible) or this blaming of ULEZ on labour is one of the biggest hoodwinks the conservatives have pulled for a while.
I always thought ULEZ was BoJos plan when he was mayor and on top of that the expansion which is currently about to happen Inc the timeframe was ALSO BoJos plan .

funnily enough it is one of the only things he has done that I am aware of that I actually respect him for

it would seem there are some "small" loopholes in ULEZ.

apparently this badboy is compliant 27l engine and looking at the exhaust coming from it doesn't seem that clean.

Only in central London, it gets more and more pathetic as you get further out.

I'm sure number plate theft from ulez compliant bikes will become a thing...
