London violence reaching epidemic proportions

There is a big difference between looting (edit, or anti-social type behavior) and theft.

You need to go super super hard on crime, otherwise it will spiral.

Why are these kids so bored that this is a worthwhile use of their time? What happened to bike riding, skateboarding, building camps in the woods, gaming, spud gun fights? All the things I did when I was a kid and more.

Maybe Its part cultural and part lack of discipline.

I can't think of anything else that might have affected a mall's stores since 2020.

IIRC many US shopping malls have been dying for at least 20 years now due to the increase in internet shopping*, and Covid really did a number on a number of the remaining ones that had just about been managing.

*And the loss of some of the previously huge "anchor" stores that people went to a mall specifcally for, and once they were not there (because of bankruptcy etc) there was no longer the pull for the public, which meant the smaller stores suffered.

Whatever happened to the days of going out in school holidays on your BMX with your mates, going to the shop for ice poles and sitting in the park?

It seems these days for many of these kids half your idols are "influencers" who flaunt their wealth and the newest tech some are "musicians" who devote most of their lyrics talking about drugs and killings or being basically a tart. As before there seems to be a massive issue with lack of role models, lack of opportunity and lack of disipline / respect. They seem to think they are owed something without working for it.

I suspect the lack of Police and prosecutions the last decade hasn't helped, the closure of youth centres in London (along with it the positive male role models) added in the above with lockdown and modern social media has just created a perfect storm.

I lived in Germany for 7 odd years in an inner city and never ever saw the lack of respect that I see in the UK's cities from younger folk. Nor the behavior, nor the hanging around doing nothing / imtimidation. Of course plenty of exceptions but generally kids seemed much better bought up and just more... decent. Then again German's don't take rubbish from anyone and speak their mind in very straight forward ways. Probably helps.

Some will desperatel use the most tenuous of links to somehow blame it on the government again.

The only ones to blame are the perpetrators. Everyone apart from the mentally ill has the tiny amount of intelligence needed to differentiate right from wrong.
It's not just the government, it's the entire structure of british society that has shifted to mindless consumption. There's a story running on the BBC currently that even though wallets are tight people are desperate to have their apparently necessary holiday vacation somewhere that isn't the UK... the profligacy of this shouldn't be understated for the sake of pretending that the solution is so easy. If it was easy it would have been done already wouldn't it?

The reason it hasn't is almost entirely because everyone is taking liberties they shouldn't and expecting punishment on everyone else but themselves. It should not be shocking to anyone that the void of figures that exude ethical, moral responsibility and near totality of figures projectile vomiting their emotionally-charged garbage in the pursuit of wealth for themselves rather than for the country eventually rolls down the hill to the small people.

Seems illogical and foolish to me to expect the plebeians to uniquely be without sin whilst everyone else merrily breaks the very same rules without consequence. I'm all for punishing the guilty, but I would have thought it would be a rather obvious truism to avoid merely punishing easy prey and letting the people with actual power (and this includes all the very 'ethical' middle-class folk that definitely don't snort a mountain of cocaine every weekend perpetuating this very behaviour) do whatever they want as it's rather fatal to a society becoming so unequal.

Never had any of those schemes when we were younger. We did things like play games, sports, hang around with one another.
Amazingly none of it was criminal and we did things like show considerstion for other by keeping the noise down at night.

Did all of your peers act the same?

My generation were quite lucky. We had youth clubs, I was raised in the country and farmers had no issue with you going on their land as long as you didn't damage crops or disturb livestock, summer holidays were amazing. There were still kids who got in trouble though, vandalism, drinking, drugs were pretty much unheard of where I grew up in the 70/80s other than butane gas and maybe glue? Certainly no drugs at my secondary school.

Maybe if they found a way to promise increased violence and looting for luxury goods the big store owners might reconsider and re-open to facilitate the criminals and take the pressure of looting off the small store owners? <LOL>

It can't be fixed, if they focus on the groups causing the trouble they get accused of racism.

It can be fixed, but government and police values need to be realigned. Sadly no government or police force seem to have stomach or will for that and the public definitely aren’t prepared to foot the bill.

So we moan, use the issue as a political tool to further open the wealth gap. The smart people use this to get further ahead and mugged in the street that pushes them further to the right so they can be raided at home and mugged in the street more often. And around it goes.

Sorry, is this an example of what some on here call a word salad?

God forbid people want a break from the doom and gloom in this country and our summer so far has been shocking. Going on holiday isn't exactly mindless consumption, unless we're talking about Dave and the lads going on a 4-day Benidorm bender, then maybe.

Covid did a number yes, but other locations have returned and are doing well as can be expected for such a company. Its specifically this location which is a complete disaster. All those stores left because of the crime and drug situation.

How does jetting off to Alicante or wherever help the country? People should be investing in the future of their country rather than escaping it.

Exactly, who says “I know, let’s scrimp on costs and have a holiday somewhere cold and where it’s ******* down 24/7. That sounds fun”

Speak your mind now and you'll probably get arrested in London for some kind of newly created *ism.

I didn't say it would, but it does seem a bit odd to suggest that holidays abroad fall into the category of mindless consumption.

Pretty much everywhere in the UK looks the same, and if you want to take a chance on some sunny weather in places like Cornwall, you're still going to be paying a fair bit and risking a terrible week of weather.

It's not a binary thing either, a week or two abroad doesn't mean they aren't investing more in their own country.
