London violence reaching epidemic proportions

Jail is a deterrent for some criminals. Second or third generation mindless feral youth with nothing to lose? Not so much.
Jail also serves to separate the mindless feral youths and career criminal from the law abiding citizens, so that law abiding citizens won't be victimised.

As far as I know less than 10% of American prisons are privately owned.

Enforcing the law with appropriate punishment does reduce crime, as it deters copycats. Just because crime is not completely eliminated does not mean that it is not working as a deterrent. Did you consider that without the "harsh" punishments that crime would be worst in America? Go look at all those cities that are now experiencing a theft epidemic because they basically made it okay to steal.

People are rioting in the streets because they don't fear punishment. We have an over abundance of ways to entertain yourself in 2023. They are not doing this because they are bored, they are doing this because they think they can get away with it. It also happens so soon after the riot in New York.

Who was that clown that walked into a persons home for TikTok views. He got a slap on the wrist. What do you think was his take away from that? You think other kids didn't notice that?
I would disagree with the sentiment of people having many things to do in this age range (tbf they do have plenty they could do, but it's gated by their friend group no?) because if we look at video games as being the main distractor then what do most of them happen to be designed to do to this cohort? Extract money from them continuously for giga epeen. Now how is that possible if they don't really make any money and their parents aren't exactly rolling in it?

These kids are drowning in peer pressure and FOMO to be perceived as wealth as quick as possible unlike any generation before it, I think it's almost certainly natural that the lowest common denomination of behaviour that gets clicks/views/clout/whatever is what these folks look up to as a means to start their hustling/scamming empire that everyone else is getting airs on the internet for.

Are the parents not bringing up their kids then? Or is it on everyone else? But yeah there are plenty of legal things these kids could be doing.

Yeah, as I said I’ll get my hand in my pocket. Will enough of us though?

As most people are looking for a quick, no cost/effort/risk to themselves option while maintaining the political status quo.

I also think the issue could easily outpace our capacity to build prisons. A wider authoritarian plan and government would be needed.

Some years ago now, I was involved with a youth program, funded by us and other individuals and businesses. Hiking, fishing trips, camping a weeks holiday a year that type thing. One thing that haunted me was hearing about some of the family life of these kids. I couldn’t stop thinking they have no chance to make anything of themselves. Me teaching them to fish, taking them hiking and buying fish and chips every fortnight isn’t anywhere near enough. I also found myself wanting to choke the life out of some of the parents.

Teenagers acting like total idiots in big packs is hardly some new thing exclusive to todays youth. I remember groups of kids would rush local corner shops all the time after school in order to score some free space raiders and cola cubes... not to mention all the fights in public between pupils from different schools etc.

Time travel back to Toxteth in the 90s and try telling me with a straight face that the kids back then had more sense than today's kids...

I'm not sure how relevant that is unless the kids were punching cops to get to the cola cubes?

I actually think there should be more of that type of thing, to fill the gaps. Its not perfect but what's the alternative?

This is why the internet and an ever increasing wealth divide are a horrible combination.

Too many kids grow up with very little, with very few perceived prospects but are bombarded with 'success stories' and wealth on social media.

At no time has the difference between the haves and have nots been so stark and visible.

We need as a society to treat the cause of criminality and not the symptoms.

Prison and punishment have been proven time and again to have little effect on criminality, giving more people prospects and a chance in life would be money far better spent

Are you suggesting that kids/teenagers have only started assaulting the law recently because I can assure you that's not accurate.

scrotes gonna scrote, no matter the decade
Oh can you? or how about different people have differing experiences growing up? You were talking about groups of kids causing trouble but tbh apart from the odd wrongun at my school it was all a bit boring. There was always the talk of a fight brewing between neighbouring towns but most of the time nothing came of it. Most kids in the 90s where I was from respected the law.

Anyway all of this is moot when the subject matter is certain kids robbing stores and punching cops as opposed to eating cola cubes.

Oh can you?

Yes ?

Of course they do, hence why i know for a fact that plenty of teenagers used to also be trouble making scrotes when i was growing up

And most kids respect the law nowdays. There is and always will be groups that don't though.

Lol the problem isn't them eating cola cubes, it's them storming a shop in order to steal stuff.

Yeah, just removing them from toxic environments for even short periods of time has to be a good thing. Those kids will have children of their own now and I bet their are ten times more kids and and even worse parents.

Some very good points. I hadn’t really considered the effect of mobile phones and social media.
