I've reached the end of Book I/beginning of Book II and have found myself really needing to get some fellowships together!
 
I've now just got back into this game after reading this thread, I have a level 17 man/warden on a server.

Just wondering, what is the best 'class/race' combo to go with at the start, as i'd like to start again on Laurelin with you guys.

Completely depends on your play style - the classes are incredibly varied. Warden's a good one to play, but Captain's my favourite melee class, though solo levelling is a bit slow. Even with a companion, your damage isn't great. Personally, I can't play anything other than a RK, which means dwarf or elf, both nice since they get +20 fate traits to counteract the -8 fate they start with. I don't really like the man starting area. I've levelled two humans, and I know every individual tree in Chetwood because of it - the starter quests have you running back & forth endlessly! I suggest you level a few combinations to the end of the Prologue book, you'll get a good sense of how they play by doing that.

I'm not entirely sure that there is a best class/race in LOTRO, all the classes are pretty effective tbh.

The easiest way would be to upgrade to a monthly subscription and buy MoM (which should be about a fiver) and Siege of Mirkwood (no idea how much this is these days, I guess £15 or so), that would give you everything.

You'd have to add up the cost of all the adventure packs and expansions, add in a few extra character slots and maybe shared bank storage. A small fortune probably :)

The best way to do it would be to buy a lifetime membership if it's still available, not sure that it is though.

Edit - or pay a monthly sub of course :)

They're all good classes, hunters (like most classes) have some abilities which are very nice, notably the teleporting about which is a god send at times. They're also very good nukers, though survival can be an issue sometimes against multiple mobs if they get on top of you.

If you pay the monthly that raises you to VIP which gives you all the content , though you would still need to buy the MoM and SoM expansions (which should total around £20)

If you got the expansions, but did not pay monthly, then you still would not be a VIP player (you'd be a premium) which would mean that you wouldnt have the content (quest packs) from around level 25 to the Mines of Moria (around level 50) so you'd still be missing quite a bit. (in effect, you'd have the mines of moria (1st expansion) for level 48+, but no real way of actually reaching level 48 for it (short of buying the quest packs individually , either with cash or points.. or paying monthly)
