LOTRO free to play going ahead.

I say you choose a crafting profession based on your class. Hunter for Explorer due to the fact it's defense is medium armour, my Guardian is a Metalsmith as it contains the armour and shields i need, damage output isn't a problem on my Guardian so i didn't choose Weaponsmith, and i don't understand what the fuss is about with Guardian dealing low damage, their damage is fine.

Right I'd like to start out with LOTRO online, only I'm a little confused as to what I get. Seeing as it is f2p, I might as well play for free first before deciding if I want to buy points or anything.

But I'm confused as to the content I get. Does this include the Moria and Mirkwood expansions (as they were out before f2p correct?).

Then the quest packs- do these just fill out various areas with quests/items/content for higher level players?

Also, that bloody downloader for the game is offering speeds which means it will take 1000s of hours to finish- if I grab the standard version from file planet, can I upgrade it to the hi-res version?

Lastly, say I do enjoy playing and so preorder the Isengard expansion, would that give me content outside the expansion directly, e.g quest packs from earlier areas?

You now have to buy the moria and mirkwood expansions to access them. You can explore all the original release areas, but you won't be able to take quests in the areas from about level 25 onwards without buying quest packs. The storyline epic questline is free right up to 50.

The game is fairly generous with rewarding you points for achievements mind you (kill 50 goblins in bree, kind of thing). It's generally possible to pick up a quest pack or two without spending a penny.

Disable the pando media booster process to fix that awful download issue. There's a special offer on the pre-order, one of the options gets you moria and mirkwood as well as Isengard. Otherwise, it doesn't give you any previously unavailable areas.

Thanks for the information! Except I don't get what you mean by the bolded part- when I kill that process in task manager, it just says 'starting pmb' and then goes on downloading at the same tiny speed?

Hmm...doing a bit more digging you can only disable / uninstall it once the original download is done, ie. to stop it doing the same thing for updates. Guess you'll just have to wait the 1000 years for that first download :p

I don't know how the Euro version is but the American one you get points to spend in the Lotro store and can buy quests packs with them on F2P. Also, The American version is up to level 65 on F2P so just give it time and it will keep getting better.

Er..yeah, I said that in the very next sentence :p

I'd forgotten you can go all the way to 65 now on f2p though. Must be almost impossible to find mobs that give xp though after about 55?

It's a p2p client, possibly your ISP throttles them during the day? I've never had an issue with it but you could try grabbing the old eu client off of gamershell, or there was a very good torrent in the newbie questions section of the CM forums, then just let that version update all the way to it's curent release, but this will take absolutely bloody ages.

I've given up on the damn thing. Firewall is fine, checked the options panel etc, and even at night, the best speed the pmb thing gives is 200KB/s, which even then drops out from time to time.

I'm just going to download the standard res file on Fileplanet, and come back to pmb later. Actually, on gamershell, which old EU client would you recommend?

The most recent one... I guess that'll be the SoM version, but they will all work. As I say if you can get that torrent off of the old CM forums that'll be your best hope of a speedy download, was always flawless for me.

anyone know if the bonus 25% xp that comes with the top price rise of isengard pack applies to all characters or just the ones created at the time of purchase?

ie. i've got a dwarf champion and an elf loremaster, should i roll another char before purchase or will i get the bonus if i create a third char down the line?

It is a pocket item and will work for all current and future characters until the reach level 65.

Quote from LOTR Forums:

You get the 25% bonus XP by slotting a pocket item that gives you the bonus. The pocket item is only good up to level 65. But any character at any point in the future will have this pocket item and have the option of slotting it for the 25% bonus.

I can confirm you get a new item with each new character created (and all existing ones). They were also due to fix the tooltip yesterday clarifying that it works up to level 65, even after Isengard is released. Havent had a chance to confirm yet.

It's for sure worth the pre-order imo, apart from the rest xp , i've not noticed leveling to be any quicker might just be me! only level 20 atm

Decided to download this on my new rig as getting the urge to play a MMO again. I already have a level 25 F2P Champion, not sure whether to stick with him or not as i cant remember **** tbh and i hated the lonelands for levelling and dont think i can get much further, but at the same time ive done the 1-20 levelling so many times and never got further, it might just be a waste to do it all again.

Levels 1-20 are the most easiest parts tbh. Most players have whizzed through the early levels to then hit around 20 & find they have to move around to level.

Admittedly it's been a long time since I levelled a lower level alt as the Devs have filled out a lot of the areas in Lone Lands/Evendim etc so it makes levelling a bit easier now.

I've pre-ordered RoI and use the 25% XP pocket item on my RK who's trundling through Moria now but after levelling 6+ alts to lv60+ it's getting wearisome.

Great game to get into & especially with it being F2P (with restrictions) I'd recommend it to everyone who fancies trying it to dive in.
