LOTRO free to play going ahead.

I'd prefer to wait and buy this with the 5000 odd points I have sitting unused, but that 25% xp boost is looking very tempting. I have 3 or 4 toons in their early 50's, all suffering from moria-fatigue.

It helps, but with a bit of clever play you can go a long way without buying anything. Once you hit 50 (level cap is 65) you need to buy the expansions though really to progress.

Weaponsmith made me by far the most money, and it mostly came from mid level stuff. By the late 40's he was sitting on more cash than all my other toons combined (and one of them is 60 with scholar close to maxed).

There are usually really obvious gaps in the market, if you keep you eye on the AH.

You now have to buy the moria and mirkwood expansions to access them. You can explore all the original release areas, but you won't be able to take quests in the areas from about level 25 onwards without buying quest packs. The storyline epic questline is free right up to 50.

The game is fairly generous with rewarding you points for achievements mind you (kill 50 goblins in bree, kind of thing). It's generally possible to pick up a quest pack or two without spending a penny.

Disable the pando media booster process to fix that awful download issue. There's a special offer on the pre-order, one of the options gets you moria and mirkwood as well as Isengard. Otherwise, it doesn't give you any previously unavailable areas.

Hmm...doing a bit more digging you can only disable / uninstall it once the original download is done, ie. to stop it doing the same thing for updates. Guess you'll just have to wait the 1000 years for that first download :p

Er..yeah, I said that in the very next sentence :p

I'd forgotten you can go all the way to 65 now on f2p though. Must be almost impossible to find mobs that give xp though after about 55?

Eugh, it's supposed to speed your download, but it's rubbish. You have to have it for the initial install, but once the game's up and running, delete the thing immediately, it knackers your bandwidth whether the game's running or not.

This is probably a good time to mention that I've moved my Laurelin toons into another kin. A friend of mine and a load of SWG vets she knows have started playing so I've joined them.

funny how dyin games in complete desperation tryin to hold on to/get new players in, i mean wow i understand, they got loads of users, up till lvl20 is not free, but after that u will get sucked in, thats what they hoping for, lotr on the other hand is a massive fail in my opinion

Their revenue has tripled since going free to play!

But thanks for sharing your well thought out words of wisdom

LOTRO uses an updated version of the DDO engine, so you're going to see similarities :)

It's a lot prettier though, although I always thought DDO has held up very well given its age. LOTRO is strictly from the WoW school of game design, very much a traditional style mmo. There's a lot to it, but you won't find a whole lot of surprises, except perhaps for the legendary weapon system. The environments are generally fantastic though.

DDO is an amazing game, but very different and quite limited in some ways - entirely instanced, quite unforgiving of death, and not really a game to solo beyond the lower levels. As far as character classes go, it's got more depth than just about any other game out there. I've spent weeks and weeks just mucking around with class combinations. The combat is great, and the adventure areas almost always really well crafted. You hit a payment ceiling much sooner than LOTRO though, it's not nearly as generous in its F2P model.

Due to my chronic alt-itis, I've only just started exploring Mirkwood. Couldn't even tell you how to get to Enedwaith. I'm sure I'll get around to Isengard eventually :D

You certainly don't have to buy virtue traits. Quite possible to get the ones you want up through the course of normal play.

As for riding skill, I don't know, as I have a lifetime. Do you have to unlock it for every toon, or can you still do the riding quest at level 35?

I have a lifetime too, but I play in bursts - could stay away from it completely for a month, and then play nothing else for a whole week.

I blame Moria - whenever I get a toon up to 50, I just can't face trawling through 5 or 6 levels of dungeon all over again. Even rushing it, it still takes ages. Would have been nice if Enedwaith of Dunland was done even partly as a replacement for Moria level content.

I actually can't stand skirmishes. Sorry :D

I did a load on my LM to get the necessary items for my eagle pet, and they drove me spare. You can kind of minimize your time in Moria by entering late, leaving early, but the game really is designed around you spending about 5 levels in there, would be nice for there to be an alternative.

I enjoyed Moria the first time around, and actually even more the second, as I found a lot of stuff I'd missed the first time.

This is my 4th toon in the 50's though and I'm at the stage where Bosi and his mates can go jump down a well for all I care :D
