LOWEST PRICING IN UK ON NVIDIA: 1060 £179.99, 1070 £349.99 & 1080 £449.99 !!

A 1080 is a good doubling of power compared to a 970.

And perfect for a 1440p resolution. 60hz is a limiting factor tho. I think actually the 1080 is too much power for that refresh rate.

My suggestion is if you have a Gsync panel then do some homework on whether a 1070 is better than a 1080 for you. If you have a Freesync panel then same applies Vega 56/64.

I have neither a G-Sync or Freesync panel - couldn't justify the cost and not fussed by 144Hz/FPS. 60 is fine for me. I'll look more closely at the 1080's then and see if I can cram one into my case!

I did a quick review of the GTX1080FE:

Aftermarket ones will be a bit quicker and I used stupid settings and have an older CPU,but the GTX1080 should work fine at your resolution. My case is a mini-ITX BTW,and look at the PSU I am using! ;)

Edit!!

There is an RX470 in there too,so should give you a rough idea of what performance gain you might get, since a GTX970 is also around the same performance IIRC.

Yeah I'm on a mini ITX too (Bitfenix Prodigy) so space is tight. I do have a bigger case if needed though :) I'll have a read through and see what I think.

I use a Cubitek Minicube and a Corsair SFX 450W. Just remember its an FE(so stock clockspeeds) and essentially a Core i7 3770. My monitor is a UP2516D.

Edit!!

My case can only take 280MM cards,so you will be fine as the Prodigy can take 320MM cards.

So after umming and ahhhing constantly over the last week, flitting back and forth between a 1060 and a 1070 I finally pulled the trigger on this to upgrade an ageing 7970 GHz edition:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inno...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-068-in.html

I am probably over-egging it for a poorly overclocking 2500K and 8GB DRR3 1600MHZ, but I have justified it to myself that I'll probably, hopefully, eventually, get round to doing a full system overhaul for VR (when it's ready) and I'm sure the 1070 will still have some resell value.

In terms of what made me choose the Inno3D - it was one of the cheapest, has a sturdy looking backplate and comes with a free mousemat (!). I was needing a mousemat anyway... I will put a review of the card up on the store when I've had a chance to try it out.

Can't you get some 1080s for only £20 more?

That's a silly purchase if you paid that price when 1080's can be had for a slither above that.

Haha, ouch - no I didn't pay the current price - It was on offer until this afternoon at £379. Looks like someone else got one too as the stock has gone down from 6 to 4.

I certainly couldn't find a 1080 for < £510 with shipping to France as far as I could see. I also had to use some OCUK vouchers as part funding was from a pre-paid Mastercard that FitBit issued as a refund for one of their awful trackers (incredibly annoying method of refund). The cheapest 1080 in France is around 580 Euro and with the exchange rate as it is I would certainly not buy here.

TBH I was more concerned about Vega 56 giving me buyer's remorse, but my general habit is to look at GPUs in detail for weeks when I have the urge to buy one, then buy it and never look again at the market for the next 2-3yrs until the next upgrade.

Probably what is most pertinent though is that breaking the £500 barrier on a purchase like this with the wife is another psychological battle altogether.

@Mardukas Are you referring to the MSI 1080 OC Armour? Do you recommend the card?

Yes, that's the one I bought.

I have since discovered it suffers from coil whine when playing a demanding game like Doom. I didn't notice at first because I had a desk fan on near my PC.

I've put a baffle board in my case to cover the empty side fan holes so I can't really hear it much now.

I have just received the card - I was slightly disappointed to discover that it does not actually have a backplate - I was convinced it had from my online research - particularly as one appears in this German unboxing video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thhixQqsJo4 ...

Lucky German's appear to be getting a backplate with their 1070's.

Anyway, not really a big deal, but would have been nice. I haven't installed it yet as I am waiting to upgrade CPU/MoBo/RAM and get the full impact of an upgrade.

Cheers

Shame its only this week I've got to upgrading my card - seems I missed some good deals here for the 1060 6gb cards which ive been interested in.

Is there any chance they will be dropping again anytime soon or any similar offers coming back up that would be worth me waiting for or trying to catch? :D
