M4 SSD 5200 hour timebomb

I've just checked my launch day M4 the power on hours is showing as 343. I think there is enough time for a fix and I create regular backups. Having said it's probably time to make sure the backups are valid.

I've just checked my launch day drive in my desktop and it is just under 700 hours so for the time being I'm not going to worry :)

I'm sure Crucial will have a fix out way before I even get to the 2000 mark lol

Had mine a month & its showing 150 hours so far. At that rate mine will begin to have problems sometime in December 2014 (Just out of warranty knowing my luck  ). Here's hoping Crucial will have the problem sorted by then, otherwise its back to a intel SSD for me.

How do you check the drive hours?

I'm using crystal disk info which can be downloaded freely.

:)

Yup, for most people it won't be an issue. 5200 hours is 216 and a bit days, that is on without stopping, if you have your computer on 8 hours a day that is almost 2 years usage, if you have it turned on for only a couple hours you'll have upgraded before its an issue.

I've said in a couple threads recently, mostly the OCZ suck threads, that other than not actually being OCZ's fault, and how much effort they put into fixing it(when many other Sandforce based drive companies did next to nothing), that other ssd's have problems too.

What if it turns out the 5200 hour thing is a bug caused by another Intel RST driver that triggers at a certain point, realistically wait and see what happens to be honest. Maybe Crucial made a big boo boo, maybe the drives die and there is no fix, if they rma you a brand new drive, meh, that is life, things happen, who cares. If there is a fix that for most people is several years before they would run into the issue, who cares.

Since when did all hdd's work flawlessly? Seriously, I mean how old are they, old tech, basically nothing new for donkeys years yet IIRC the samsung drive I have, 1.5tb green jobbie, needed a firmware flash or it wouldn't work properly on sata 3 chipsets, sb850 and p67(at the time).

This has happened to most hdd companies, and all hdd companies have failures anyway.

:)

If your on Windows something like CrystalDiskInfo or DiskCheckup, on OSX download SMARTUtility.

Thanks.

548 hours in with my 128GB version since purchase in September. Not too worried at this moment in time but I hope a fix is avaliable soon for everyone else's sake

My PC is on 24/7 and my hours are at 1400+ since November with the SSD being my boot drive..., why crucial why. Knew I should have stayed away from SSD's.

Crucial said:
We are aware of an issue that is currently affecting a small number of users whereby their m4 causes their system to require a restart. This issue occurs after approximately 5,000 hours of actual “on time” use. Following the initial reboot, the system then requires subsequent restarts after each additional hour of use. However, the data on the SSD is unaffected and will not be lost due to this condition.

Through our investigation, we have determined the root cause of the problem and will be releasing a firmware update that rectifies the situation. We are currently running through our validation and compatibility process. Once this process is complete, the firmware will be made available to our customers. Although we understand the desire of some people to start using unreleased firmware now, we want to ensure that our solution works across multiple chipsets, systems, and operating systems before publishing the release code. We are currently targeting the week of January 16th, 2012 to publicly release the new firmware update.

We understand the impact that this is having on some users right now and apologize for this inconvenience. We appreciate your continued support, feedback, and patience as we finalize code and resolve this issue.

Unbelievable.

I still stand by my practise of only using SSD's for temp file's / page files / non critical data.
