Malaysia Grand Prix 2012, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/20

While I have only been able to see bits of the weekend so far, it looked to me like vettels shift to the harder tyre was more in response to the car being a bit 'dodgy' on the softs rather then a complete strategy shift.

Vettel did say he felt faster on the harder tyre, but Webber said RBR were looking at running hards in Q3 on the back of his Q1 time.

Martin Whitmarsh was actually surprised Kimi didn't do the same, especially given the fact he has a 5 place grid drop.

So Webber and Raikkonen both posted a 1:36.461, but webber gets the position because he set the time first? Bit unlucky for Raikkonen! You'd think they'd compare the Q2 times instead in case of a tie.

The presumption is that the track and drivers get better with time so the guy who set it first did the better run, its not entirely unfair but is such a rare occurrence that its usually never brought up.

Thought what Webber alluded to was quite interesting when he said that last years car was the 'odd one out' with regards to their cars, which (as well as the tyres) could explain why he struggled a lot last season compared to Vettel, who was obviously really comfortable with the car.

Hopefully we will continue to see them much closer like in 2010... but hopefully Mark ending up in front this time :D

sunama cracks under pressure :D

Do you honestly believe that Webber will cause any problems for Vettel?
I mean seriously guys. How badly do you need Vettel to beat Webber, before you admit that Webber just isnt a problem for Vettel.

As we saw last week, Vettel/RBR race pace is better than their qualifying pace. What this means is that it is possible for Vettel to beat McLaren, if they have an off day.

Last week Vettel beat Hamilton, but couldn't beat the in-form Button.

Agreed. :)

LH>JB>SV>MW :D:D

At the moment its Kimi / Schui then everyone else waaay below them :D

On a serious note, great to see Schui in a car suited to him! Should be another awesome race! Come on Kimi!!!

P.S. What is the Super DRS doing in terms of straight line speed, are the Mercs miles faster than everyone else?

not really no but they might have more wing on or something, schumacher said hes set up for the race

Vettel is on the harder tyre so not sure why people are claiming some great victory for Webber on the softer rubber? The gap Ferrari have is most worrying, will take a whole new car to catch that sort of time up, so until then I hope MS sticks it to McLaren just like the good old days :D I really hope we see ruthless Michael back now the car is near the sharp end, he has been far too relaxed since his comeback (unless Rubens was near him).

Jenson to win I think :)

People are interpreting the fact that although cars yesterday seemed to go up to 0.7s/lap faster on softer rubber, today Alonso was no faster on the softer tyre.

We love to put down Vettel at every given opportunity (quite rightly so!), so thats where this stems from! :D

Plus clearly Webber supporters are probably fairly past it in terms of believing in reality lol ;)

In any sport, you need an element of luck. Senna was a very lucky driver. When MSc dominated, he was also incredibly lucky. That luck is now passing to Vettel.

Myself. I believe that the sportsman makes his own luck

Hamilton had ample opportunity to overtake Vettel (McLaren had faster straight line speed and could've used DRS, if he could get in the zone). However, as we saw, Hamilton just wasnt quick enough to enter the DRS zone behind Vettel. Vettel has an uncanny ability which allows him to prevent cars from using DRS against him.

It astonishes me that every time Vettel does well, there is a whole host of excuses, I often wonder if I am watching the same race as everybody else. The commentators/drivers etc all share the view that Vettel is a very special driver, yet on this forum...he is anything but.

If I hadnt seen any races myself and just read these forum posts, I would probably be led to believe that Vettel is a donkey who could only get on pole if his car was at least 5s/lap faster than everybody elses.

I realise that he is German, so Brits may not like him, but this should not detract that the guy (along with Button), is the most in-form driver in F1 at the moment (Vettel and Button finished 1st and 2nd in the WDC last year and they did the same in Australia last week). In the 2nd best car last week, he beat Hamilton (who many rate as a top line driver), fair and square. Safety cars are part of F1 and it is important for a driver to hold track position, at all times. All F1 drivers know this.

I think a lot of us wonder the same thing.

I don't think anyone on here thinks Vettel is a 'donkey', far from it, but I think there are plenty who are yet to be convinced that he is somehow the world's greatest gift to driving off the back of a season where his car was clearly very very good and allowed him to cruise to a championship unpressured and unchallenged.

The problem is that you seem to view any criticism of Vettel at all, whatever the degree of it, as people slating him as being an out and out **** driver, which is just not the case.

I think its more that he beats Lewis so there must be another reason why that happens other than Vettel is simply better :)
